It didn’t take long for Conor McGregor to throw in his two cents following Islam Makhachev’s UFC lightweight title win on Saturday.

Makhachev scored a shocking second-round submission over the UFC’s most prolific finisher, Charles Oliveira, in the UFC 280 headliner. Establishing himself as the undisputed lightweight king, it was just a matter of time before UFC’s Irish superstar went in on the Dagestani destroyer.

Taking to Twitter as he typically does, Conor McGregor was complimentary towards Makhachev’s performance at first, but the praise quickly devolved into a litany of cringe-inducing claims that he has his own “developed system” to combat that of Islam Makhachev’s.

“Nice fight. nice performance. I have built all the tools to beat this style now Vs b4. Experience Vs. Face breaking shots from clinch and baby brain batter shots from bottom. And the rest of my repertoire yous know. Steel left leg. Cannon back hand. Wrist control.

“The thought of shutting down this system of fighting with my own developed system is quite intriguing to me. Whoever of them against. It’s not personal. It’s a skill evaluation and a fight. Even thru generations. The imaafs, amateurs. A war of attrition. To the box.

“I have the system to hurt this style of fighting guys I am telling you. Bro is a sh*t jocks. Fat mouth shut your mouth you done nothing tonight except go against fathers wishes and run. It’s not fathers plan completed yet, pal. You know. Your people know and they talk about you.”

With his decisive win over ‘Do Bronx’ at UFC 280, Islam Makhachev is slated to take on reigning featherweight champion and No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter, Alexander Volkanovski in early 2023.

As for Conor McGregor, the ‘Notorious’ UFC star has been on the shelf since breaking his leg in the first round of a trilogy bout with rival Dustin Poirier at UFC 264. Gearing up for a return in early 2023, McGregor has shared his intention of competing in the welterweight division upon his return. With Makhachev competing as a lightweight, the possibility of the two matching up is fairly slim. We can probably chalk up Conor McGregor’s latest Twitter rant to one simple explanation. Conor is just being Conor.

Islam Makhachev

At UFC 280, Islam Makhachev proved to the doubters what he’s been saying all along.

The Dagestani destroyer entered the biggest fight of his career against by far his toughest opponent, Charles Oliveira. Never once did Makhachev buckle under the pressure. Instead, he rose above and delivered a jaw-dropping second-round submission over ‘Do Bronx’ to capture the UFC lightweight championship. The electrifying crowd at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi was elated to bear witness to the rise of a new lightweight king.

Joining Megan Olivi backstage to discuss his win, Islam Makhachev showed up cool as a cucumber with no UFC championship wrapped around his waist or draped over his shoulder. Asked how he’s feeling following his world title win, Makhachev said:

“I cannot believe [it] because that moment’s on my shoulder too much right now. I don’t know.”

Talking about his opponent, Makhachev knew he was stepping into a fight with a world-class jiu-jitsu specialist, but was more than confident in his own skills stepping into the Octagon on Saturday.

“I know this guy have good jiu-jitsu, but I always told everybody I don’t care about it because I know my skills. Nobody around the world can make me trouble on the ground. I know my skills and I know I can beat everybody.”

With the lightweight title now firmly in his grasp, Islam Makhachev will be tasked with taking on the No. 1 ranked pound-for-pound fighter in the world, Alexander Volkanovski. The two are slated to square off in early 2023 when the promotion heads to Volkanovski’s home country, Australia.

“This guy’s so small. I’m gonna stop this guy. Like what I did a couple minutes ago, I can do same thing. Take him down and finishing there because I know this guy’s so small. He’s not on my level. I respect him. He’s a great champion, but I am different level. Because when I step inside the cage, everybody understands.

‘It’s a new goal. A new target for me. I’m gonna be pound-for-pound number one.”

Dana White Was Thrilled by Islam Makhachev’s UFC 280 Performance

UFC President Dana White had nothing, but positive things to say about Islam Makhachev’s stellar performance in the UFC 280 main event on Saturday. Speaking at the post-fight presser, White revealed the words that UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov told him following Makhachev’s epic world title win.

“I’ve been saying all week, you’ve got two of the absolute best in the world in their prime facing off. When I went into the Octagon after, Khabib said, ‘I told you. I told you he’s the best in the world.’ To beat Oliveira is one thing. To beat him the way he beat him is another and as fast as he did it. He looked incredible tonight.

“The big question going into tonight was, how is [Makhachev] going to deal with the pressure? He dealt with it just fine.”

Sean O’Malley eyes bantamweight title shot following win over Petr Yan; ‘People want me to be champ’

Sean O’Malley scored the biggest win of his career at UFC 280, though it wasn’t without a fair amount of controversy.

On Saturday, O’Malley stepped inside the Octagon with No. 1 ranked bantamweight Petr Yan. Going into the bout as a +320 underdog, ‘Sugar’ delivered in a brutal back-and-forth war, earning a split decision in the process. However, a majority of fans watching and submitting their own scores under the popular app Verdict saw it as a clear win for Yan. Even Sean O’Malley appeared to be somewhat surprised when his name was called by Octagon announcer Bruce Buffer.

Following the event, Sean O’Malley sat down with the media at the UFC 280 post-fight press conference. When asked how he felt about the decision, O’Malley says he will need to rewatch the fight before he can comment on the decision levied by the judges.

“It’s kind of a blur to be honest. He caught me with some good shots. Petr’s a tough dude. A tough Russian right there so I’d like to really watch it back before I can, you know, dissect it.”

Is Sean O’Malley Next Up For a Bantamweight Title Opportunity?

Given the nature of his win at UFC 280, Sean O’Malley may not necessarily be the clear No. 1 contender to reigning champion Aljamain Sterling‘s title. Asked if he believes a world title shot is next, O’Malley was uncertain but believes that sooner or later, he will become a UFC champion.

“Like Dana says, it’s hard to make fights that night, right after. Or the day of. I’m sore. I have a headache. I’m tired. I don’t want to fight anyone. I want to go home, see my princess. You know, it’s inevitable. I turn 28 tomorrow. I’m gonna be in this sport for a long time. People want me to be champ so, it’s gonna happen sooner than later.”

If Sean O’Malley is the next man up, he’ll face an even bigger task against Aljamain Sterling who made quick work of TJ Dillashaw at UFC 280, putting away the former two-time champion in the second round. It was another solid performance for ‘Funk Master’ who extended his win streak to eight on Saturday.
