Expected to feature at UFC 279 on September 10. – the undisputed bantamweight title fight between division champion, Aljamain Sterling, and challenger, former two-time division gold holder, T. J. Dillashaw, is now expected to land as the co-headlining bout for UFC 280 on October 22. at the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Last time out, Aljamain Sterling co-headlined UFC 273 back in April, successfully unifying the bantamweight titles with a rematch win over rival and then-interim titleholder, Petr Yan in Jacksonville, Florida.

Aljamain Sterling x T.J. Dillashaw is set to be shifted a month later to the Middle East

Returning from his infamous two-year retroactive USADA suspension back in July of last year, former two-time undisputed bantamweight champion, Dillashaw, successfully defeated common-foe, Cory Sandhagen in a close, split decision win as he returned to the division limit. Yahoo! Sports reporter, Kevin Iole was first to report the news of Sterling’s rescheduled title fight with Dillashaw.

“The bantamweight title fight between @funkmasterMMA (Aljamain Sterling) and @TJDillashaw will be co-main event on #UFC280 on Oct. 22 in Abu Dhabi,” Kevin Iole tweeted.

Initially, Sterling and Dillashaw were targeted to feature at a UFC 279 event in September, however, with the confirmation of a welterweight headliner between Khamzat Chimaev and Nate Diaz for the pay-per-view event, the bantamweight title fight between Sterling and Dillashaw has been shifted.

Clinching the undisputed bantamweight crown back in March of last year, Sterling managed to win the title via disqualification after Yan landed an illegal knee in the fourth round of their title showdown.

As for Dillashaw, the former two-time undisputed bantamweight titleholder first landed the crown with a major upset win over Brazilian veteran, Renan Barao, before then defeating former teammate, Cody Garbrandt in 2017 to win the title for the second time in his lengthy Octagon tenure.

UFC 280 takes place on October 22. from the Etihad Arena on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE – with a vacant lightweight title fight between former champion, Charles Oliveira, and the #4 ranked, Islam Makhachev set to take main event honors.

Going to bat for his fellow countryman and fellow former UFC champion, Charles Oliveira, former heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos has accused Conor McGregor of “ducking” a fight with the Sao Paulo native upon his relinquishing of the lightweight crown.

McGregor, a former two-weight UFC champion, has been vocal in his pursuit of an immediate lightweight title challenge upon his return from a fractured tibia suffered last year, and has called consistently for a fight against Oliveira.

However, despite the Dubliner’s attempts to force his way into a lightweight title shoehorning, the promotion have confirmed Oliveira will return at UFC 280 on October 22. in Abu Dhabi, UAE – featuring in a vacant lightweight title fight, tackling the surging, Islam Makhachev.

Conor McGregor has been accused of avoiding Charles Oliveira

Noting his interest in securing a lucrative future title fight against McGregor, Oliveira insisted he would wait for the 34-year-old Crumlin native to return to the Octagon, as he eyes a Brazil homecoming at a planned event early next year.
Sharing his theory on the timing of Oliveira’s title fight against Makhachev instead of the vocal Conor McGregor, Santa Catarina favorite, dos Santos claimed the latter was clearly “ducking” a fight with his compatriot.

“Did you see that not long ago he (Charles Oliveira) challenged (Conor) McGregor?” Junior dos Santos said on the Podpah podcast. “And McGregor is kind of ducking. Of course, we know, just ducking. It’s obvious he won’t want to, it’s a bad fight for him.”

“Damn, it’s obvious, and then, they’re wanting to put him against that Makhachev – Islam Makhachev, who’s a monster. It looks like he will accept the fight against Makhachev, hoping that Khabib (Nurmagomedov) will come out of retirement to fight him later.” (Transcribed by the Mirror)

As for Oliveira, the promotion’s most recent undisputed lightweight champion, headlined UFC 274 back in May against former interim lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje – submitting the Arizona native with a dominant first round rear-naked choke.

During the broadcast for UFC Long Island over the course of the weekend, the broadcast team confirmed the October 22. UFC 280 headliner on ‘Fight Island’ – with Oliveira and Makhachev set to square off for the vacant lightweight crown.

With odds for the matchup officially released to boot, according to online bookmaker, SportsBetting.ag – Oliveira, who is riding a division-best 11-fight winning spree, has opened as a quite the surprising +195 betting underdog.

Islam Makhachev is in the midst of a seven-year unbeaten run

As for the dominant Islam Makhachev, who has yet to suffer defeat since a 2015 knockout loss to Oliveira’s compatriot, Adriano Martins, sits as a betting favorite – with lines placing him at -230 against the former lightweight kingpin.

In his sole successful defense of the undisputed lightweight crown, Oliveira, the promotion’s most prolific submission threat, stopped another former interim champion, Dustin Poirier with a third round standing rear-naked choke back in December at UFC 269.

Charles Oliveira, the promotion’s most recent undisputed lightweight champion, headlined UFC 274 back in May, submitting former interim divisio champion, Justin Gaethje with a first round rear-naked choke.

Oliveira entered fight week as the undisputed lightweight titleholder, however, was stripped of the crown after he tipped the lightweight scales by half a pound ahead of the Phoenix, Arizona event.

Charles Oliveira has long been rumored to clash with Islam Makhachev next

As for Makhachev, the American Kickboxing Academy staple headlined a UFC Apex facility event back in February against short notice replacement, veteran San Bernardino native, Bobby Green – stopping the Californian with a slew of opening round ground strikes. The promotion confirmed Oliveira’s main event title fight against Makhachev during the official broadcast of UFC Long Island.

Winning the vacant lightweight crown back in May of last year, Charles Oliveira, the promotion’s most prolific submission artist, stopped one-time title challenger, Michael Chandler with a second round knockout win.

Scoring a sole successful title defense in his reign as champion, the Sao Paulo finisher stopped former interim lightweight titleholder, Dustin Poirier with a third round standing rear-naked choke in the third round of their December UFC 269 main event.

In the midst of a division-best 11-fight winning run, Oliveira added Gaethje to a run of victories since his ascension to the top of the lightweight pile.
