Eugene Bareman, the coach of many top MMA stars including Israel Adesanya and Dan Hooker reportedly brought knives and machetes to the gym in order to combat complacency.

Adesanya is just hours away from one of the highest-profile fights of his UFC career. The middleweight champion will defend his title against a familiar foe in Alex Pereira, a rival that famously knocked out ‘The Last Stylebener’ in one of their two meetings under the GLORY Kickboxing banner.

At City Kickboxing in Auckland, New Zealand, Bareman works as Adesanya’s head coach. He is the man tasked with preparing ‘Stylebender’ for his UFC 281 main event on Saturday night. Citing issues of complacency amongst some of the gym’s top fighters, Bareman, and other coaches decided to address the issue head-on.

“There’s a reason and we as a group of coaches felt that there was like a little bit of complacency amongst some of the senior guys,” Bareman told Combat TV. “They were a little bit too comfortable and we decided as a group of coaches to address that.”

Dan Hooker and Israel Adesanya Say Bareman Brought Knives to the Gym and Treated Them Like Toys

Following up on the comments from Bareman during his appearance on ‘The MMA Hour‘ with Ariel Helwani, Dan Hooker revealed that “legit” knives were pulled.

“Knives were pulled, legit knives. He would have had them on this chair, there were a number of moments. He’s always packing. We got a few big telling offs, he kicked the hornets nest a few times. It had to happen to wake everyone up, maybe we were being complacent. After that, we definitely reached a new level. He demanded more out of us.

Appearing in the same episode, Israel Adesanya confirmed Dan Hooker’s comments, even detailing times when Bareman would bring a machete to the gym and show it off like a child with an expensive new toy.

“There was a period of two to three weeks, it’s like show and tell. He’d bring a new knife to the gym, not to intimidate, he’s just a f*cking weirdo. He’s one of those guys that goes to the bushes, hunting deer. He even brought a machete to the gym one day, a cool machete. It’s like a kid with a new toy, he makes jokes about it.”

Beneil Dariush delivers prediction for Poirier vs. Chandler at UFC 281: “He puts himself in really bad situations”

No. 4 ranked lightweight contender Beneil Dariush is ready for the 155-pound war scheduled to go down at UFC 281 on Saturday night.

Emanating from the world-famous Madison Square Garden, the UFC is bringing out the big guns for its return to New York City with lightweight fireworks as top contenders Dustin Poirier and ‘Iron’ Michael Chandler are scheduled to scrap. Coming off a big win of his own against Mateusz Gamrot at UFC 280, Beneil Dariush sat down with Luke Thomas of Morning Kombat to give his thoughts on the highly-anticipated bout between Poirier and Chandler on November 12th.

“It’s a three-round fight? If Chandler fights smart, he should be able to win this fight,” Dariush said. “But I think Chandler, right now, he’s so focused on being exciting and so focused on being entertaining for the fans, he puts himself in really bad situations. I think if he goes out there, plays a very conservative striking game, a lot of wrestling, he should be able to pull this off.

“But in reality, I think Dustin Poirier’s gonna end up winning this fight, because Chandler’s gonna try to be more than he needs to be,” Dariush added. “I think he’s gonna end up losing the fight because of that.”

Beneil Dariush on His Next Opponent Inside the Octagon

With his unanimous decision win over Mateusz Gamrot last month, Beneil Dariush finds himself on an eight-fight win streak with notable victories over Drew Dober, Drakkar Klose, and Tony Ferguson, Dariush is in the market for a top-five opponent, though he’s not exactly convinced that anybody in the top five wants to step inside the Octagon with him.

“If I have someone to fight come, what is it (UFC 284), February 11, right? I’m kind of excited for it, I’d love to go to Australia and (fight) there,” Dariush said during an interview with Submission Radio. “I would wanna go out there and I do wanna fight someone good, ideally. The real question is, who? … Charles would be great, but is Charles gonna be ready? Is he gonna be in the mindset where he wants to fight again? If not Charles, I’ll be honest, I’m not sure the top five are really interested. Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler, if one of them wins, I don’t think they’ll want to face me.”

Beneil Dariush did mention top-five contender Justin Gaethje, however, it is unlikely the two would ever fight as they are good friends. With Poirier vs. Chandler potentially a title eliminator, Dariush could find himself against streaking lightweight Rafael Fiziev, though if it were up to him, his next opponent would be the former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira.

“I don’t know who the right guy is. I’m gonna start asking you guys… Who do you guys think could actually beat me? That’s the guy I wanna fight,” Dariush said before Rafael Fiziev was brought up as a possible opponent. “Fiziev… he’s good, man. I like that fight, too. But we’ll see, I don’t hate that fight. Ideally, Charles would be better.”

Ahead of his UFC 281 headliner this weekend at Madison Square Garden, Israel Adesanya has defended some of the viewpoints of social media influencer and social commentator, Andrew Tate – describing his marketing strategy as “genius”.

Returning to the Octagon for the third time this year in a weekend headlining clash, Adesanya will attempt to not only land his sixth successful title defense at the middleweight limit, but also avenge a pair of kickboxing losses to Brazilian striking phenom, Alex Pereira.

The City Kickboxing star last competed in the main event of UFC 276 back in July against Jared Cannonier – retaining his title in a much-criticized and lacklustre performance, despite a billing of a standout finish win from Adesanya ahead of the fight.

Israel Adesanya talks up controversial influencer, Andrew Tate

Previewing his clash with Pereira this weekend in New York City, Adesanya touched on the subject of the outspoken and chastised, Tate, praising his “genius” marketing scheme.

“I didn’t know him when he was kickboxing,” Israel Adesanya told the Mirror ahead of UFC 281. “But there was a time maybe a few months ago, before he got ‘cancelled’ – you can’t cancel anyone – when he just started to pop up on my Instagram and my YouTube and I was like, ‘Who the f*ck is this guy?’”

“Then I was listening to guys like Andrew Schulz talk about the smart system he did – I’m paraphrasing, but he paid people to post or make pages about him and just flood the internet,” Israel Adesanya explained. “If he created that marketing strategy, that’s a genius way to get [out there] because he was on everybody’s page. I never really followed his career as a kickboxer. I don’t know what he’s doing now.”

UFC bantamweights, Aljamain Sterling, and Sean O’Malley were both pictured with Tate during their respective trips to Abu Dhabi, UAE for UFC 280 earlier this month – with the former taking flak for his appearance with Tate, which Adesanya defended.

“I saw people were going at ‘Funkmaster’ (Aljamain Sterling) for that,” Israel Adesanya said. “I was like, ‘the f*ck?’ You can’t hang with someone? If he shows me respect I’ll show him respect. I’ve never met him, I have nothing with him. Some of his messages I can understand people didn’t like, but I’ve heard some of it.”

“I like Jordan Peterson, he gets the same message across without the bravado,” Adesanya explained. “I like bravado, I like the style but I feel Jordan Peterson gets it across in a different way to Andrew Tate.”
