Yet to feature under the UFC banner since headlining UFC 269 last December, former interim lightweight champion, Dustin Poirier has hinted at his impending return at Madison Square Garden at UFC 281 in November, amid continued links to a high-stakes end-of-year clash with Michael Chandler.

Poirier, the current #3 ranked lightweight contender, headlined UFC 269 against former champion, Charles Oliveira, suffering a third round standing rear-naked choke submission defeat against the Sao Paulo grappler.

In the time since, Dustin Poirier has been linked with a slew of potential outings in his return to the Octagon – including the likes of Tony Ferguson, former foe, Justin Gaethje, incoming UFC 279 headliner, Nate Diaz, and the aforenoted fellow contender, Chandler.

Earlier this summer, reports emerged detailing how the organization were currently targeting a lightweight clash between Poirier and Chandler to take place on November 12. at UFC 281 in Madison Square Garden, however, the promotion has yet to confirm the matchup.

A further report also claimed that the matchup between Louisiana native, Poirier, and Missouri veteran, Chandler could also land at UFC 282 on December 10. at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Dustin Poirier appears to confirm a UFC return at MSG in November

With the promotion yet to confirm a bout between Poirier and Chandler for either end-of-year event, the former has hinted that he will be competing in the ‘Big Apple’ on his official Twitter account, tweeting, “Madison Square Garden (diamond emoji)” over the course of last weekend.

Enjoying an impressive 2-1 run in the Octagon last year, Dustin Poirier managed to hand former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor a second round knockout loss at the beginning of last year on ‘Fight Island’ – before then landing a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO win over the Dubliner in July after the former suffered a fractured left tibia.

As for Chandler, the one-time title chaser managed to spring a massive second round knockout win over the previously mentioned, Ferguson on the main card of UFC 274 back in May – returning him to the winner’s enclosure.

In what will be the third meeting of Alex Pereira and Israel Adesanya in a combat setting, the Brazilian recalled the moment his son entered the ring mimicking Adesanya after he was on the receiving end of a devastating knockout.

Pereira has bested Adesanya twice in both meetings in the first instance beating the current middleweight champion via decision before unleashing a furious head kick which stopped ‘The Last Stylebender dead in his tracks the second time around. This was the only time in Adesanya’s professional career that he had been defeated by knockout also.

Now looking ahead to the third meeting of these two men taking place in the main event of UFC 281 where middleweight gold will be up for grabs, Pereira went onto social media to highlight the moment his son Alessandro entered the kickboxing ring to mimic the impact left upon Adesanya by his father.

“I told them before not to let him in the ring (laughing emoji) (my son Alessandro after I knocked Adesanya out)” Pereira said on his social media.

Israel Adesanya promises revenge in UFC 281 title defence against Alex Pereira

In what appears to be Adesanya’s toughest test to date not only physically but mentally the champion will be looking to exact revenge on Alex Pereira and continue his dominance in the middleweight division. Undefeated in the 185-pound weight class the current champion’s only loss inside an MMA cage came when he dared to be great and challenged then light-heavyweight champion Jan Blachowicz for his title.

‘Polish Power’ was able to get the better of Adesanya using a well-structured approach with his striking and grounding Adesanya to the matt using the physical advantages he held at UFC at UFC 259.

Since Alex Pereira’s introduction into the UFC, Adesanya has successfully defended his title on another two occasions. Firstly, he was able to best ‘The Reaper’ Robert Whittaker at UFC 271 in their rematch beating the Australian via decision. He would then go on to defend his title at UFC 276 where he shared the card with his next opponent. Adesanya was able to emerge victorious over Jared Cannonier whilst Pereira blasted his way into title contention with a violent knockout of Sean Strickland on the same night.

Before this Pereira introduced himself to the UFC fanbase with a TKO victory over Andreas Michailidis and UFC 268 before releasing a relentless bombardment on Bruno Silva at UFC Fight Night: Santos vs. Ankalaev which saw him beat his fellow Brazilian via unanimous decision.

UFC 281 will be redemption territory for the current middleweight champion as his opponent will look to emerge 3-0 against the city-kickboxing title holder.

Will Israel Adesanya obtain the revenge he desires or will be looking at the new middleweight champion, Alex Pereira, at the end of the matchup?

An undisputed strawweight championship fight between reigning division champion, Carla Esparza, and challenger, former division titleholder, Zhang Weili is set to co-headline UFC 281 on November 12. from Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York.

Attempting to secure her first successful title defense since beginning her second reign as strawweight champion, Californian veteran, Esparza managed to clinch the undisputed crown back in May of this year in a lacklustre UFC 274 co-main event win over common-foe, Rose Namajunas.

Carla Esparza will look to land her first-ever successful UFC title defense, when paired with Zhang Weili

As for Hebei native, Zhang Weili, the former undisputed champion snapped a run of back-to-back defeats against the aforenoted, Namajunas back in June at UFC 275 in Singapore – stopping another common-opponent, Joanna Jedrzejczyk with a blistering second round spinning back-fist knockout. Ariel Helwani was first to report the news of Carla Esparza’s title defense against Zhang Weili at UFC 281.

The inaugural UFC strawweight champion, Team Oyama mainstay, Esparza managed to defeat Namajunas first back in December 2014, winning The Ultimate Fighter 20 as a result to boot.

Dropping the title immediately in a dominant striking loss to Jedrzejczyk, Esparza currently finds herself in the midst of an impressive run of six straight wins, adding Namajunas to prior victories against Virna Jandiroba, Alexa Grasso, Michelle Waterson, Marina Rodriguez, and Yan Xiaonan.

Winning her strawweight title on home soil in an August 2019 knockout win over Jessica Andrade, Weili would turn in a consensus 2020 Fight of the Year performance en route to a decision win over Jedrzejczyk in her sole title defense, before dropping the title to Namajunas in April of last year in a brutal high kick KO loss.

UFC 281 takes place on November 12. from Madison Square Garden in New York City, New York – with an official headlining bout for the penultimate pay-per-view event of 2022 yet to be determined by the promotion.
