Julianna Peña brands herself greatest female fighter of all time UFC

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Julianna Peña is steadfast in her opinion, that she is the best female mixed martial artist to ever compete – in the wake of the sudden retirement of arch-rival and former foe, Amanda Nunes over the weekend at UFC 289.

Peña, the current #1 ranked bantamweight contender and former undisputed division champion, has yet to return to the Octagon since July of last year, headlining UFC 277 against the above-mentioned, Nunes, dropping her undisputed bantamweight title in a hugely one-sided unanimous decision loss.

First facing Bahia native, Nunes in the co-main event of UFC 269 in December 2021, Peña turned in a shocking stoppage win over the two-weight champion, submitting the Brazilian with a highlight-reel second round rear-naked choke.

And initially scheduled to headline UFC 289 last weekend in a title trilogy rubber match with Nunes, Peña was forced from the bantamweight title fight after suffering a fractured rib, with Mexican challenger, Irene Aldana replacing her as a result.

Responding to Nunes’ victory over Aldana and subsequent immediate retirement from mixed martial arts, Peña, who has now been denied a decider with the former two-weight champion, claimed she forced Nunes into a retirement due to her ability.

Expected to be involved in a vacant title fight at the bantamweight limit, Peña has been called out by former title challenger, Raquel Pennington, while flyweight contender, Erin Blanchfield, has reportedly offered to make a division climb in pursuit of a title fight with Peña.

Julianna Peña touts her own ability following UFC 289

Despite the retirement of Nunes – whom many have considered to be the greatest female mixed martial artist of all time, according to Peña, she herself, is actually the best female fighter to ever compete in combat sports.

“The greatest female fighter of all time, according to me, is me,” Julianna Peña told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “You wanna know why? Because, I’m not a fighter, I’m a warrior. I’m a warrior that lives inside and that’s the difference.”

“Amanda’s (Nunes) a fighter, and I’m a warrior,” Julianna Peña explained. “I’m the greatest warrior and I’m the greatest fighter of all time. And I believe that with my heart, because I never stop coming. You’re gonna have to put me to sleep, or knock me the f*ck out, to get me to stop coming after you.”

Charles Oliveira’s stunning fight-ending sequence against Beneil Dariush was not luck or even a happy accident. It was a clear case of practice makes perfect.

Returning to the Octagon for a co-main event clash with streaking lightweight contender Beneil Dariush, ‘Do Bronx’ got back into the win column in a big way, scoring a first-round TKO against ‘Benny’ all set up by a perfectly-timed straight-right, head-kick combo that ultimately put Dariush on the mat and down for the count. In a video clip shared by Roobet on YouTube, Oliveira can be seen practicing the very combo backstage that would lead him to a highlight-reel finish on Saturday night.

Charles Oliveira Eyes Rematch with Islam Makhachev in Abu Dhabi

With his impressive first-round finish at UFC 289, Charles Oliveira has his sights on running back his October 2022 meeting with reigning lightweight world champion, Islam Makhachev. ‘Do Bronx’ saw his four-year unbeaten streak snapped at the hands of the Dagestani Destroyer during their UFC 280 showdown.

“I don’t need to send a message. Last time, you saw ten percent of me. Now, you saw 120% of me. The champion has a name, and it’s Charles Oliveira. And you know what? Dana, I’m the next one (for the title),” Oliveira said in his post-fight interview.

“You want me to fight him in his house? I’ll go. I’m ready. Let’s do it.”

Islam Makhachev is expected to return in October as the promotion heads back to Abu Dhabi for UFC 294. Makhachev plans on defending his title at the event, but it may not be in a rematch with Charles Oliveira. Makhachev has already expressed a desire to defend his title against someone he has never met inside the Octagon. That has led many fans to look toward July’s highly anticipated scrap between former interim titleholders Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

The winner could very well find themselves with a third, and likely final UFC title opportunity in Abu Dhabi before Oliveira gets his chance to reclaim the 155-pound crown in early 2024. However, if Dana White gets his way, it will be Oliveira stepping inside the Octagon with Makhachev this October.

Charles Oliveira now deserves title rematch with Islam Makhachev Javier Mendez UFC 289

Ahead of UFC 289, American Kickboxing Academy head coach, Javier Mendez had claimed that even with a victory – Charles Oliveira would likely not deserve a title rematch with his student, Islam Makhachev, however, the Brazilian has now been touted as next in line for a title fight according to Mendez.

Co-headlining UFC 289 over the course of the weekend, Charles Oliveira managed to return to the winner’s enclosure with a first round win over the surging, Beneil Dariush – finishing the Kings MMA staple with a barrage of opening frame ground strikes.

The victory propelled the Sao Paulo finisher back to the winner’s enclosure for the first time since October of last year, having previously dropped a second round arm-triangle submission loss to Makhachev at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, UAE in the pair’s vacant title showdown.

Immediately calling for a title fight rematch with Makhachev following his success against Dariush, Oliviera was issued a reminder of how their first matchup played out by the Russian – who claimed there was “levels to this game”.

And despite initially denying Oliveira should fight for gold with a win over Dariush, the above-mentioned, Mendez has since claimed Makhachev should fight the Brazilian later this year now in a certain tune change.

“I didn’t know who was gonna win [at UFC 289], but I was crossing my fingers it was gonna be Beneil (Dariush),” Javier Mendez told Submission Radio. “I for sure did not think Charles (Oliveira) was gonna be that impressive in victory. I didn’t think he was gonna be able to do it like he did. I thought a great performance was gonna put him in the talks, but I bypassed that. Maybe it’s because I wanted Beneil to win, I don’t know. But I should not have underestimated how great he is as a champion.”

“I feel that in my opinion, Charles has earned the right to be number one in line for it [title shot],” Mendez explained. “What the UFC feels is different, but from what I see, I don’t see how [Oliveira doesn’t get a title fight next]. Do I think he’s done enough? Yeah, I think he has.”

Furthermore, UFC leader, Dana White also expressed his interest in booking a title rematch between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira later this annum

Off the back of his stunning first round win against Beneil Dariush last night at UFC 289, Charles Oliveira may have punched his ticket for a title rematch at the lightweight limit with rival, Islam Makhachev – with promotional boss, Dana White chomping at the bit for the potential re-run.

Co-headlining at the Rogers Arena in his Octagon return last night, Oliveira turned in a first round stoppage win over the streaking Dariush, handing the Iranian-born grappler a ground strikes TKO loss following a savage swarm at the Octagon fence, showing off his full striking arsenal to boot.

Referring to himself as the champion at the lightweight limit, Oliveira, the current #1 ranked contender and former undisputed champion, called for a title rematch with Makhachev in the immediate aftermath of his stoppage success, leading to a response from the American Kickboxing Academy mainstay as a result.

And while remaining coy on a potential future rematch between Islam Makhachev and Charles Oliveira prior to the Brazilian’s exploits at UFC 289, White has now claimed that the rematch is the most logical fight next.

“He (Charles Oliviera) looked like a world-beater tonight, and I’m excited for him and Islam (Makhachev) fight again,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC 289. “It’s the thing that makes sense. I’ll tell you on Tuesday. But yeah, I mean, let’s not play games; that fight makes sense. That’s the fight that should happen. And I’m excited to see it again.”

“There’s a lot of things that go into consideration for the next [title] fight,” White explained. “I mean, I’m sitting here talking to you about him [Charles Oliveira] right now, and I don’t even know what’s wrong with him. He’s in medicals. I don’t know where he’s at and what he’s got planned over the summer. The list joes on and on of things that factor into how fights are made. But I’m just telling you right here right here that is a fight I’d like to see again.”

Confirming plans to retire from mixed martial arts off the back of her unanimous judging triumph, Nunes laid her gloves and both championship titles inside the Octagon on the canvas following her decision triumph.

“My mum has been asking me so much to do this for so long,” Amanda Nunes said during her post-fight Octagon interview at UFC 289. “She can’t take it anymore. I want to enjoy everything that I have made. I want to travel a bit with my family.”

“I left my family in Brazil when I was so young for this dream, but I never thought in my mind I would become a champion,” Amanda Nunes explained. “But when i became a champion it was unbelievable”

And with former champion, Julianna Peña receiving an offer of a vacant title fight showdown from one-time title challenger, Raquel Pennington, Nunes has claimed that whomever strikes gold in her absence, will forever be a “fake” champion, however.

“I’m gonna have my belts at home with me – that’s gonna be the fake one,” Amanda Nunes told assembled media following UFC 289. “It’s gonna be fake forever, you know. So, you gets the belt now, it’s gonna be just like, pretending to have [it]. Yeah, I’m gone. I’m good – I did everything, all taken care of in my life, thank you UFC.”
