UFC 289 Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Aldana Betting Preview

Initially opening as a large betting favorite to defeat would-be opponent, Julianna Peña ahead of UFC 289 – with a switch of opponent, two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes still remains a large bookies favorite to retain bantamweight gold this weekend as she takes on Mexican challenger, Irene Aldana.

Nunes, the current undisputed bantamweight and featherweight champion, will make her Octagon return this weekend in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – taking on Jalisco native, Aldana in a bid to kick start her second reign as queen at 135lbs with a successful title defense.

As for Aldana, the Mexico native lands her first title siege since joining the UFC from Invicta FC, removed from a scheduled fight with Raquel Pennington – booking a title showdown with Nunes in place of an injured, Peña.

Riding a two-fight winning run into her title showing in ‘The Great White North’ – Aldana most recently landed a hugely unique and quite bizarre upkick body shot Ko win over Macy Chiasson, finishing The Ultimate Fighter 28 winner with a third round finish.

However, despite her recent run of good form, Aldana is quickly closing as a betting underdog (+250) to defeat Nunes over at BetWay – with the Brazilian emerging as a stunning (-300) – in quite clear-cut fashion.

Reclaiming her bantamweight spoils in July of last year in the main event of UFC 277 in Dallas, Texas – Nunes, a native of Bahia, Brazil, turned the tide on Peña in a big way – landing a completely one-sided unanimous decision success against the Washington native to reclaim the throne at 135lbs.

Successfully scoring two previous defenses of her featherweight title, Nunes landed a one-sided decision win over Felicia Spencer, before stopping Megan Anderson with a spectacular first round reverse triangle armbar win at the UFC Apex facility.

In further activity of note at UFC 289 this weekend at the Rogers Arena in Canada, a touted title-eliminator at the lightweight limit is on deck – as former undisputed divisional champion, Charles Oliveira returns to the Octagon for the first time since October – tackling Iranian-born grappler, Beneil Dariush.

Dropping lightweight spoils to the scales last May – infamously, Oliveira is closing as a short and rather close betting underdog (+120) to defeat Dariush (-150) this weekend in their co-main event slot – with the latter hoping to score his first title opportunity, and lodge consecutive triumph number eight against the Sao Paulo native.

However, despite closing as a betting underdog to defeat Dariush outright at UFC 289 this weekend, Oliveira appears to be attracting attention with punters and bettors in regards to landing a finish via KO or submission against the former, closing currently as a -450 favorite to land a finish over Dariush, who is currently priced as a +350 underdog.

Furthermore, both men are priced at -162 odds to land a finish over one another at UFC 289 this weekend, with both men largely viewed as both knockout and submission threats, respectively – and with Oliveira, the Brazilian enters his return fight as the most prolific outright finisher and submission artist in the history of the organization.

Charles Oliveira laughs at Beneil Dariush prediction for UFC 289 he is wrong

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has laughed off predictions of a dominant display from Beneil Dariush en route to a victory at UFC 289 this weekend, denying the Iranian will find it all his own way in their co-main event slot.

Oliveira, the current #1 ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since October of last year, most recently headlining UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi, UAE – seeing his 12-fight winning run halted against Islam Makhachev in the pair’s vacant lightweight title fight.

On the same card, Kings MMA staple, Dariush managed to secure his seventh consecutive victory – landing himself a one-sided unanimous decision success against former two-weight KSW champion, Mateusz Gamrot in the Middle East – earning this weekend’s title-eliminator against former gold holder, Oliveira.

And breaking down this weekend’s showdown with Oliveira, Dariush has predicted a one-sided success against the Brazilian – in rather dominant fashion to boot, citing a lack of “hunger” for the former.

“I think he (Charles Oliveira) didn’t start his camp when he should have,” Beneil Dariush said. “And then tried to catch up and probably overtrained, and that’s how he got injured.”

“I just think comfort is an enemy for athletes like us, and I think he’s (Charles Oliveira) gotten really comfortable. Obviously, he’s a wealthy guy now and he’s living good. I think those are things that can cause you some problems – cause you to lack desire, basically. I think that’s something that could take place in his life.”

Charles Oliveira laughs off Beneil Dariush’s prediction for their UFC 289 fight

Laughing off Dariush’s prediction of a one-sided victory this weekend, Oliveira has insisted he will be the one leaving Vancouver, British Columbia with a win in tow.

“(Beneil) Dariush is a great fighter,” Charles Oliveira said during a recent interview with Sports Illustrated. “He’s one of the best in the world. If he thinks he will dominate me, he is wrong. I will be the one leaving with my hand raised.”

Without a victory since May of last year, Oliveira managed to submit former interim gold holder, Justin Gaethje with a one-sided opening round rear-naked choke in the main event of UFC 274 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Slated to headline UFC 289 this weekend in a bantamweight title fight against Irene Aldana, two-weight promotional champion, Amanda Nunes has been urged to embrace a potential impending retirement from active competition, from one-time light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith.

Nunes, the current undisputed featherweight and bantamweight champion, is slated to headline UFC 289 this weekend in the promotion’s return to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – taking main event honors against Mexican replacement, Aldana in a reworked main event clash.

Yet to feature since July of last year, Bahia native, Nunes managed to reclaim the bantamweight throne with a largely one-sided unanimous decision victory over Julianna Peña in the pair’s championship rematch in Dallas, Texas.

Amanda Nunes urged to embrace a potential retirement from MMA

Revealing recently how she had weighed up the prospect of retirement following her stunning December 2021 title submission loss to Peña, Nunes has been urged to make peace with a potential retirement from the sport, by Nebraska native Smith.

“Is it weird that, at times, I look forward to Amanda Nunes’ retirement,” Anthony Smith told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “It’s a very weird sentiment I have. Sometimes when I see her in these fight weeks, in these interviews, and she’s dragged her whole family there, and then she gets in and she fights – sometimes I almost feel bad for her.”

“Like, just go enjoy your life, and just go have fun,” Smith explained. “Like, stop doing all this sh*t. Because a lot of times, she [Amanda Nunes] doesn’t seem to always enjoy it that much.”

A decorated two-weight champion, over the course of her professional career, Nunes has landed spectacular triumphs over the likes of Valentina Shevchenko, Miesha Tate, Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg, Holly Holm, Germaine de Randamie, Felicia Spencer, Megan Anderson, and the aforenoted, Julianna Peña.

Veteran color-commentator, Joe Rogan is slated to miss out on a return to the commentary-booth this weekend in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada this weekend for UFC 289 – with the long-time staple replaced in the booth by former lightweight contender, Paul Felder.

Rogan, who has taken an exclusive schedule on pay-per-view events in the United States in recent years, will continue that trend this weekend – with the New Jersey native missing out on the promotion’s return to Canada.

Most recently featuring alongside the duo of play-by-play lead, Jon Anik and former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier at UFC 288 last month, Joe Rogan called bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling’s return to the Octagon against former two-weight champion and Olympic gold medalist, Herny Cejudo.

However, ahead of UFC 289 this weekend, MMA Junkie confirmed how Anik and Cormier will be joined in a three-man commentary booth by the aforenoted, Felder.

Taking main event honors in the promotion’s flagship return to ‘The Great White North’, two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes looks to defend her bantamweight crown as she tackles short-notice opponent, Mexican challenger, Irene Aldana.

In the night’s co-main event, former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira features for the first time since October of last year, taking on the surging, Beneil Dariush in an expected lightweight title-eliminator.

Megan Olivi will also return to action as a roving reporter at UFC 289, conducting both post-fight and pre-fight interviews with fighters and athletes, as well as providing real-time updates throughout the pay-per-view event. Veteran Octagon announcer, Bruce Buffer also features at UFC 289 this weekend.

While yet to be confirmed by the organization, with UFC 290 slated to take place next month in Las Vegas, Nevada during International Fight Week – one can expect Joe Rogan to return to commentary duty.

That event will feature a featherweight championship unification clash between champions, Alexander Volkanovski, and Yair Rodríguez.

Ahead of his upcoming Octagon return this weekend in the co-main event of UFC 289, former lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has claimed ex-two-weight champion, Conor McGregor has been “avoiding” a fight with him, however, he is still plotting a bout with the Dubliner.

Oliveira, the current #1 ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since suffering a second round arm-triangle submission loss to Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 last October – seeing his division-best 12-fight winning run halted in the pair’s vacant lightweight title fight.

As for McGregor, the Crumlin native has been sidelined since he fractured his left tibia and fibula in a first round doctor’s stoppage TKO loss against common-foe and former interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

Charles Oliveira still chasing fight with ex-UFC champion, Conor McGregor

Slated to return beneath a bantamweight title fight featuring his compatriot, Amanda Nunes and challenger, Irene Aldana at UFC 289 this weekend in Vancouver, Oliveira, the promotion’s most prolific finisher and submission artist, has touched on a future fight with former two-weight gold holder, McGregor.

“Everyone knows that Conor (McGregor) is avoiding me,” Charles Oliveira told Sports Illustrated ahead of UFC 289. “His fight against (Michael) Chandler will be great, but everyone can tell he is avoiding me. Personally, I think Chandler will win.”

“Conor is very strategic,” Charles Oliveira explained through his translator. “And he can fight. But he won’t fight me.”

Without a victory since May of last year, Sao Paulo native, Oliveira – who shares the Octagon with Beneil Dariush this weekend, most recently landed a first round rear-naked choke submission win against former interim champion, Justin Gaethje at UFC 274 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Oliveira minted himself as the lightweight champion back in 2021, securing the vacant crown with a rallying second round KO win over the above-mentioned, Chandler.

Beneil Dariush uninterested in fight with Dustin Poirier UFC title he doesn't want to

Plotting his first siege at undisputed lightweight gold in October with a victory over former gold holder, Charles Oliveira at UFC 289 this weekend, surging division contender, Beneil Dariush has scoffed at the possibility of defending spoils against Dustin Poirier, claiming the Lafayette native has avoided a fight with him.

Dariush, who has won seven straight, puts his undefeated streak on the line this weekend in the co-maine event of UFC 289 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – drawing the current #1 ranked contender, Oliveira in a championship-eliminator.

In the night’s headliner, two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes defends her undisputed bantamweight title against Mexican challenger, Irene Aldana in the promotion’s return to ‘The Great White North’.

Sidelined since featuring on the main card of UFC 280 last October, Dariush featured against former two-weight KSW champion, Mateusz Gamrot, landing a one-sided unanimous decision victory against the Polish contender.

Beneil Dariush distances himself from fight with Dustin Poirier

Weighing up a future title fight with current division gold holder, Islam Makhachev at UFC 294 in October, Dariush – who will battle for contention against both Poirier and Justin Gaethje who are set to rematch at UFC 291 next month, has little interest in a title fight – should he strike gold against the Louisana striker.

“Shoot, I haven’t hought about it, to be honest with you,” Beneil Dariush told Submission Radio of a future fight with Dustin Poirier. “If he wins, do we really need to fight? I mean, he’s not interested, right? He doesn’t really wanna fight me. So, yeah, I mean, he’ll be the bMF champion, maybe he’ll go on and defend that belt and I’ll fight somebody else.”

“I don’t know,” Beneil Dariush explained. “We’ll see what the UFC says. But if he’s not pushing to fight me if I’m the champion, then at this point I’m just – I’m over it. You know. I really do wanna fight the next generation, these young contenders. But if it’s Dustin Poirier, it’s Dustin Poirier.”
