Sean O'Malley suggests UFC is segregated would they sell pay per views

Ahead of his return to the Octagon at UFC 292 in August, bantamweight contender and incoming title challenger, Sean O’Malley has questioned if the promotion were to segregate its male and female competitors – could the latter sufficiently sell enough pay-per-views, comparing a potential split to the NBA and WNBA.

O’Malley, the current number two ranked bantamweight contender under the banner of the organization, is slated to return to the Octagon on August 19. at the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts, taking on defending bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling in his first title charge under the promotion’s banner.

Briefly holding the number one rank in the division, O’Malley, a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, managed to defeat former undisputed bantamweight champion, Petr Yan back in October of last year in Abu Dhabi, UAE – landing a decision win over the Russian striker.

Undefeated since his sole career loss to Marlon Vera – who takes on Henry Cejudo on the same August card, O’Malley has enjoyed a five-fight undefeated run en route to his first title siege against Sterling later this summer.

Sean O’Malley suggests segregation of male and female fighters

Weighing up a potential segregation of male and female fighters under the banner of the UFC, O’Malley questioned if the proposition could even be successful.

“What if there was a ‘WUFC’?” Sean O’Malley said on his YouTube channel. “What if they had their own program? Would it last? Would they be able to see pay-per-views, would it sell out arenas? It’s still the UFC, it’s still Dana, it’s still the UFC pushing these fights and promoting them – would it last?”

“We’re not saying they’re not good,” Sean O’Malley explained. “We’re talking from a pure entertainment point of view. Look at the WNBA, look at the NBA. There is a few girls fights that are very entertaining. There is a few. I think you should buy every f*cking pay-per-view the girls fight on if you support them that much. WNBA – WUFC, I’d like it. I think it’d be interesting. We’re not talking skill, they’re very, very skilled. I’m talking from a pure entertainment perspective. Like, ‘I can’t f*cking wait for this fight.’” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Undisputed bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling has revealed UFC president, Dana White has finally made good on his word – gifting him a Lambroghini, worth a reported $652,000 ahead of his Octagon return in August at UFC 292 – after the duo shared a verbal standoff in recent weeks.

Sterling, the current undisputed bantamweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 288 back in May against the returning former undisputed bantamweight and flyweight champion, Henry Cejudo, defeating the Olympic gold medalist to defend the title.

Becoming the first bantamweight champion in Octagon history to rack up three consecutive successful title defenses, Uniondale native, Sterling had previously stopped challenger and former champion, T.J. Dillashaw with strikes, as well as unifying the titles against then-interim gold holder, Petr Yan in a title rematch.

And now slated to headline UFC 292 on August 19. from the TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts following weeks of speculation regarding his quickfire return, Sterling has been booked to take main event status against the streaking #2 ranked challenger, Sean O’Malley.

Sharing a distinct war of words with UFC leader, White following the impromptu announcement of his fight with O’Malley, Sterling and the former went back and forth on social media and through interviews, with White angrily claiming the champion should not fight if he did not want to, insisting the promotion would introduce an interim crown at 135 pounds.

Chris Weidman doubles down on call out of Israel Adesanya I'm not an old bum UFC

Ahead of his Octagon return from a catastrophic leg injury suffered back in 2021, former undisputed middleweight champion, Chris Weidman has doubled down on his interest in a future title fight with gold holder, Israel Adesanya – maintaining he still poses threats to the Nigerian-Kiwi.

Weidman, a former undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the promotion, has been sidelined since he featured in a rematch against Uriah Hall back in April 2021, suffering a shocking compound fracture of his right tibia and fibula inside the opening half a minute of the first round.

Yet to return to the Octagon in the time since, Weidman is now-slated to fight at UFC 292 in Boston, Massachusetts – taking on soon-to-be common-foe, Brad Tavares in a pay-per-view card.

Chris Weidman believes he can pose a threat to champion, Israel Adesanya

And following the booking of his return against Tavares later this year, Weidman admitted that he hoped to work his way back to a title fight against Adesanya – now doubling down on those calls, claiming he could pose many problems to the City Kickboxing staple.

“No one accomplished what I’ve accomplished in the middleweight division besides Israel Adesanya as far as title defenses and all that,” Chris Weidman told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “I love that matchup. I think once people see me back out there and see that I’m not this old bum at this point, and they see that I have some serious threats to bring to the table, I believe I’m a really bad matchup for [Israel Adesanya].”

“But, I have to prove that, and so until then, I’ll shut my mouth and just go out there and prove it against Brad Tavares,” Chris Weidman explained. “I think they’ll see enough in that fight where they’ll believe.”

Sidelined since he headlined UFC 287 back in April of this year, Adesanya managed to reclaim the middleweight title with a spectacular second round KO win over arch-rival, Alex Pereira in Miami, Florida.

Commenting on his return to active competition against Tavares in the summer, Weidman revealed he still plans to reclaim middleweight gold in the future – in the form of a fight with would-be common-foe, Adesanya.

“And just climb up the rankings, earn my way back to a title fight,” Chris Weidman said on his podcast. “I love the champion, Israel Adesanya. I love that matchup. That’s the goal, is to get there and to get a fight with him. I am on a mission to make that happen.
