Revealing a slew of injuries he is still dealing with in the aftermath of his successful title defense against Henry Cejudo earlier this month, Aljamain Sterling asked for UFC leader, White to show him some respect for taking such a quickfire turnaround against O’Malley, a call the promotional boss labelled as “ridiculous”.

“I’m not the one what went out and said, ‘If my body holds up,’ when I’m promoting a fight, if you’re not healthy, don’t take the fight,” Dana White told FanSided during a recent interview.

“We’ll have somebody else fight, we’ll do somebody else for the interim title,” Dana White explained. “Don’t say you’re going to go out and fight and then start saying stuff like, ‘If my [body holds up].” What’s the first thing that happened? As soon as I was at the press conference, I was asked, ‘Is Aljamain Sterling really going to fight or not?’ Is that what you want the fans thinking? How is that me not giving him credit?”

The most successful bantamweight champion in Octagon antiquity in regards to consecutive successful title defenses, Sterling set himself apart from former titleholders, with his decision win over Cejudo earlier this month.

Prior to that victory, Sterling successfully defended his title in a ground strikes TKO win over former two-time champion, T.J. Dillashaw, after a successful rematch title unification win over former gold holder, Petr Yan.

“Stylistically, I think this is the most dangerous bantamweight champion there’s ever been,” Tim Welch told ESPN during a recent interview. “I really think that. He’s (Aljamain Sterling) so athletic, long and strong. He’s not just a good wrestler, he’s a good wrestler with good Jiu-Jitsu, and he’s very funky. He switches stances, throws spazzy things at you, he’s good at chaining his wrestling together – most dangerous bantamweight ever, in my opinion.”

“If you make one simple mistake, he’s going to be on your back the whole time,” Welch said of Aljamain Sterling. “His cardio has gotten better. He’s not only good at grappling, but MMA grappling. The timing is going to be right when he’s ready to start punching you, or advancing to half guard, or mounting and forcing you to give up your back. He’s very good physically and technically.”

Becoming the first bantamweight in promotional history to land three consecutive successful title defenses, Sterling has been lined up to fight Montana native, O’Malley at UFC 292 on August 19. in Boston, Massachusetts.

An announcement from UFC president, White, confirmed how Sterling would be pitted against O’Malley at the TD Garden, with a strawweight championship fight between Zhang Weili and Amanda Lemos taking co-main event honors, to boot.

However, in the immediate aftermath of the announcement, Uniondale native, Sterling, who revealed he was still dealing with injuries, and may not make the August date.

“I’m still injured with my legs banged up, my bicep still sucks,” Aljamain Sterling said. “I’m trying to get to this fight in August [with Sean O’Malley]. We’ve talked a little bit about it and we’re trying to see if we can make it happen, but my leg is still super sensitive to the touch. I hope I’m not ruining anything by me saying that.”

“Guys, I did just fight,” Aljamain Sterling continued. “The swelling has gone down a lot. I can actually do a flex with my foot, but it’s still very stiff. I’ve done PT once in the sauna one time and I did an ice bath last night. Well, yesterday afternoon. So, I think that helped out a ton with the swelling, for sure. I don’t know. We’re gonna see. My shins are super sensitive. Even just me touching it right now. They feel like mushy almost. I can make a dent in my leg.”

However, according to White, Sterling and O’Malley is official for UFC 292, despite the former’s injury caution.

“He’s (Aljamain Sterling) fighting,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC Vegas 73. “Do you want me to explain the mind of f*cking Aljo? I got a call this morning from [Henry Cejudo] saying ‘it sounds like Aljo doesn’t want to fight’… Aljo is just one of those guys who can’t get out of his own way. Why did he say that? Aljamain Sterling will make a quick turnaround after defending his bantamweight world championship against former two-division titleholder Henry Cejudo at UFC 288.

As announced by Dana White on social media, ‘Funk Master’ will return to defend his title once again against No. 2 ranked bantamweight contender Sean O’Malley. The highly anticipated 135-pound clash will headline the promotion’s return to Bostom for UFC 292. White also revealed the evening’s co-main event. Reigning UFC strawweight women’s champion Zhang Weili will defend her title against No. 4 ranked contender, Amanda Lemos.

Sean O’Malley will go into his first UFC title opportunity 8-1 inside the Octagon and riding a four-fight win streak. Sugar’ scored his spot as the next man in line with a closely-contested split decision victory over former champion Petr Yan at UFC 280 in October.

In March 2020, Zhang competed in what many consider to be the greatest fight in women’s MMA history, going toe-to-toe with Joanna J?drzejczyk.

Her opponent, Amanda Lemos, is an equal 7-2 inside the Octagon. After coming up short in her promotional debut, Lemos has since won seven of her last eight, earning wins over Angela Hill, Michelle Waterson-Gomez, and Marina Rodriguez. ‘Amandinha’ has finished her last two opponents, including an impressive third-round knockout of Rodriguez to solidify her position as the next strawweight contender.

Sterling, who most recently headlined UFC 288 just earlier this month, managed to successfully defend his undisputed bantamweight title for the third time – the sole champion in the division’s history to achieve such a feat, with a split decision win over former two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo.

Joined in the Octagon following his victory over Olympic gold medalist, Cejudo, Sterling was met by Dana White’s Contender Series product, O’Malley – with the #2 ranked bantamweight challenger expected to fight the Uniondale gold holder later this year – potentially at UFC 292 in August.

Initially scoffing at a Boston, Massachusetts appearance to defend his title against O’Malley, Sterling, however, predicted a one-sided victory over the former when they eventually share the Octagon.

“My thoughts on Sean O’Malley; that motherf*cker is frail,” Aljamain Sterling said. “Frail. You think if I can take down a short, stocky guy like Henry (Cejudo) who’s actually a gold medalist (in the Olympics) and actually has good takedown defense – what I am going to do to Sean O’Malley, like?”

“… I guarantee you, we step in there – I think I fold that man in half in one round,” Aljamain Sterling continued. “It’s just gonna look – same thing I did to (Cory) Sandhagen. Go out there and pressure forward, he’s gonna use his footwork, I’m gonna cut off the cage like I was just talking about. Eventually, he’s gonna be on his backfoot, let him throw a stupid kick that I’m gonna catch, I’m gonna bodylock him. And I’m gonna fold him in half like a lawn chair, and that’s gonna be the fight.”

And continuing that sentiment in the weeks following their initial meeting, Sterling pointed to O’Malley’s stoppage loss to Ecuadorian contender, Marlon Vera back in 2020, claiming the incoming title chaser won’t be able to develop a sufficient chin by the time they fight.

“To drag a guy like (Sean) O’Malley down – I mean, what’s this guy gonna do to me?” Aljamain Sterling asked Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. “Really – and I’m not trying to be disrespectful. It’s a subtle jab, but it’s the truth. It’s a fight, anything can happen, but at the end of the day, I think we all know what his kryptonite is. We’ve seen him one time on his back and it was like a fish out on land. ‘Chito’ [Marlon Vera] smashed him and sent him home. I think ‘Chito’ might have hit him one time and his eyes rolled back in the back of his head.”

“That’s not a good sign,” Aljamain Sterling explained. “And he’s got a tiny head. He’s a tall – he talks about my weight, but he’s skinny. He’s a twig, he’s got a really tiny head – I got a really tiny head too – he got hit one time and he was out. It les me have a little more confidence. I don’t think you can develop a chin over time. If I hit him squarely, take him down, that fight’s as good as over, probably in one [round].”
