Aljamain Sterling calls for UFC title rematch if Israel Adesanya gets one double standards

Former undisputed bantamweight champion, Aljamain Sterling has questioned recent talk of an immediate title fight rematch for former two-time middleweight gold holder, Israel Adesanya – and why that same sentiment does not surface for him, despite his dominant run atop the 135lbs division.

Sterling, the current number one ranked bantamweight contender, headlined UFC 292 back in August, dropping his divisional crown to the incoming, Sean O’Malley – in the form of a second round TKO loss to the Montana native in Boston, Massachusetts.

And in the immediate aftermath of Sterling’s loss, O’Malley has instead, welcomed the possibility of rematching fellow card victor, Marlon Vera as soon as UFC 296 in December – in a rematch for the Chone native.

Furthermore, dropping his middleweight championship in one-sided fashion earlier this month to the outspoken, Sean Strickland, former two-time division champion, Israel Adesanya appears to be pegged to challenge for gold immediately once more, per UFC CEO, Dana White.

Aljamain Sterling calls double standards from UFC brass after title loss

And as far as Sterling is concerned, double standards appear to be at play for him, questioning why he has not been considered for an immediate re-run against O’Malley – whilst Adesanya, who has now lost his middleweight championship twice in the space of a year, has been.

“If we’re gonna talk about giving instant rematches, you give a guy who lost two fights in the same title reign – so he won the belt, he lost, beat the guy, and then came back and lost again to another guy,” Aljamain Sterling said on his official YouTube channel. “So, it’s like, how are you giving him (Israel Adesanya) another title shot?”

“And yhen you tell me that I don’t deserve it?” Aljamain Sterling explained. “That’s all I’m saying. I’m not knocking Izzy. Izzy, if they [the UFC] give you the title shot, brother, take that sh*t and run. But what I’m saying is, how do you get it and I don’t? If the fans, Dana (White), whoever can justify that to me and I could be like, ‘Alright, I can see the point.’ But I don’t see the point.”

Do you agree with Aljamain Sterling’s call for a UFC title rematch?

Off the back of his spectacular title victory earlier this month at UFC 293, newly-crowned middleweight champion, Sean Strickland has been spotted chasing Monster Energy rep, Hans Molenkamp throughout a gym with a fully functional and lit flamethrower – appearing to singe some hair on the arm of the latter.

Strickland, the newly-minted undisputed middleweight champion, headlined UFC 293 two weeks ago in Sydney, Australia – defeating former two-time titleholder, Israel Adesanya in a one-sided unanimous decision win – scoring one of the biggest upsets wins in UFC title fight antiquity.

And already hitting the headlines following his title win, hugely-outspoken Covina native, Sean Strickland had to repair his actual championship belt in some makeshift fashion in his return to the United States – duct taping a right side panel of the title to the leather belt.

Continuing in his provocative behavior following his championship coronation in Australia, footage has emerged of Strickland chasing the above-mentioned Molenkamp throughout a gym, all while armed with a fully lit flamethrower

Yet to be booked to make his first attempted defense of the middleweight crown in the immediate aftermath of UFC 293, Strickland has been pegged to potentially defend his title in an immediate championship rematch against the above-mentioned, Adesanya.

Furthermore, the Californian has also received call outs from the surging number one ranked, Dricus du Plessis, as well as one-time title challenger, Jared Cannonier – whom defeated Strickland before his championship win in a close, debated decision victory back in Decemebr atop a UFC Apex facility card.

Remaining coy on his fighting future following his title win, Strickland is currently on vacation with his girlfriend – whom has been credited with making a huge difference in the newly-crowned champion’s life prior to his title win.

Adesanya dropped his title to Strickland last weekend in the main event of UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia. The loss is a major hit to the 34-year-old’s momentum and potentially his legacy.

While most of the conversation has surrounded Strickland’s shocking win, recent images also surfaced that ignited a small debate. Zooming in on a picture of Adesanya throwing a kick, it shows Adesanya’s painted nails – which also appear to be rather long.

A fan put the image to McCarthy, a legendary figure in MMA and the former referee claimed that his nails were far too long, that they would have to be cut if he was officiating the bout.

“Not while I was refereeing, those need to be cut short,” said McCarthy

Israel Adesanya’s comeback

It’s unclear whether Adesanya will get an immediate rematch against Strickland or not after UFC CEO, Dana White, has flip flopped on the idea.

Following the loss Adesanya gave a brief statement, the gravity of the loss on full display.

“I had a different plan for this, but again, life throws curveballs at you,” Adesanya said. “Win or lose, I wasn’t going to say much anyway, but right now, I lost tonight to the better man on the night. I just want to go and be with people who care about me — my team and they’re waiting for me so I’m going to do that.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Adesanya is still one of the most talented fighters on the roster and if a rematch is not granted, a win over  top contender should see him right back in the picture.

UFC 293’s John Makdessi reveals he lost more than half his fight purse due to taxes and fees

Lightweight standout John Makdessi revealed that half of his gross fight purse from fighting at UFC 293 went towards a plethora of fees, the biggest being an absolutely insane 45% foreign federal tax charge.

Makdessi competed against Jamie Mullarkey during the prelim portion of the promotion’s return to Australia. The Bull’ came up short in his return to the Octagon, suffering a unanimous decision loss which would amount to his third defeat in his last four appearances. Following the contest, Makdess revealed, courtesy of a document shared by Bloody Elbow, that his fight purse dropped from $58,000 down to $28,461, a loss of nearly $30,000.

“I sacrificed my whole life for this sport and put everything on the line,” Makdessi wrote on X. “Damn Australian government and the judges robbed me pretty badly.”

A majority of Makdessi’s losses came from a federal tax charge that ate up 45% of his earnings, but fans online were quick to point out travel expenses totaling $2,428.75. That led many to believe the UFC was charging fighters for travel expenses when booked for cross-country or international events. However, Makdessi later clarified that the UFC covers travel costs for himself and one cornerman. If he brings additional cornermen with him, he is on the hook for those charges, but they come out of his fight purse.

Another 743.03 went toward medical expenses which, again, caused fans to question why the UFC is charging fighters for medical.

Lightweight fighter Chase Hooper offered some insight into the deductions, revealing that fighters are responsible for the medical costs associated with getting licensed in a specific state or country.

“UFC pays for your flight plus one of your corners with the ability to have your other corner’s flights taken out of your check,” Hooper wrote on X. “It’s always been that way to my knowledge. The prefight medicals needed for licensing are on you to cover but are everything else after is covered.”

Israel Adesanya tipped to receive UFC title rematch with Sean Strickland next: ‘He’s Dana White’s boy’

Israel Adesanya touted as Dana White's boy will receive immediate UFC title rematch

Despite continued speculation regarding an immediate championship rematch for Israel Adesanya following upset loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293 last weekend, the City Kickboxing has nothing to fear for regarding his chances of fighting for gold again, with ex-two-weight champion, Henry Cejudo labelling him as “Dana White’s boy”.

Headlining UFC 293 earlier this month in Sydney, Australia, Adesanya dropped a one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) loss to Covina native, Strickland in the Octagon’s return ‘Down Under’, suffering his first official knockdown during his time under the promotion’s banner to boot.

And despite losing four of five rounds in a relatively comprehensive decision loss to Xtreme Couture, Strickland, Adesanya was immediately pegged as a potential candidate to challenge the newly-minted titleholder, Strickland – in the form of an immediate rematch.

Receiving falk for a potential booking of Adesanya opposite Strickland in another immediate championship re-run, UFC CEO, White has since claimed there are more options for the middleweight title’s future, than just a rematch.

Israel Adesanya touted as “Dana White’s boy” by ex-champion, Henry Cejudo

However, as far as Olympic gold medalist and former flyweight and bantamweight champion, Cejudo is concerned, Adesanya will likely to receive another title outing next, due to White’s apparent “love” for him.

“After losing four rounds to one, does he (Israel Adesanya) deserve a rematch now? No,” Henry Cejudo said on his YouTube channel. “Daniel Cormier doesn’t believe it, Chael Sonnen doesn’t believe it, the rest of the whole damn world doesn’t believe it. Will he get it? One hundred percent. When you’re Dana White’s boy, when you’re his cash cow, when you’re an entertainer and when you’ve done special things like Israel and you’ve been able to kind of grow the sport, Dana White will give you that opportunity.”

“My question is for you, Israel: is it smart for you to take a fight against a guy like Sean Strickland?” Henry Cejudo continued. “Is Sean Strickland the guy to come back after being dominated in a five round fight? I didn’t see that spark in him. It was a trip. It’s not like Sean Strickland even did anything special either. He fought him the way he fought everybody else, and he was able to win.”

Sean Strickland predicted shock win over Israel Adesanya two years ago you have to fight him

Turning in a stunning upset victory against two-time middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya last weekend, Sean Strickland appears to have predicted his exact victory over the Nigerian-Kiwi more than two years ago ahead of his UFC 293 title win – claiming he would need to take a firm fight to the former.

Strickland, who headlined UFC 293 last weekend against defending middleweight champion, Adesanya, managed to win the divisional crown with a shocking upset win, stopping the City Kickboxing staple’s second title reign with a one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) decision win.

Forcing Adesanya to fight exclusively in a countering fashion in their Sydney, Australia showdown, despite dropping the second round to the two-time champion, Strickland got off to a stunning start, becoming the first fighter to score an official knockdown on Adesanya, dropping his with a counter right hand straight.

Winning rounds three, four, and five on all three judge’s scorecards furthermore, Strickland, who firmly and comfortably out-striked and out-pointed Adesanya throughout the clash, managed to predict the exact outcome and gameplan he would use to defeat the champion, more than two years ago in resurfaced interview footage.

“Ah, dude, (Israel) Adesanya, he’s one of the best strikers in the f*cking world, man,” Sean Strickland told LowKick MMA. “He’s another guy that’s like – you’re not gonna go and outpoint Adesanya. You’re not gonna go out there and out-strike Adesanya, you’re gonna have to go in there and f*cking fight him.”

“Same thing with Uriah Hall, I’m not gonna go out there and play tag with Uriah Hall, if I’m gonna do that, he’s gonna catch me,” Sean Strickland explained. “I have to go in there and fight Uriah Hall – you have to go in there and fight Adesanya, you know.”

Lined up to potentially face former champion, Adesanya in an immediate championship rematch – potentially as soon as December, Strickland has already made some alterations to his championship title however, requiring duct tape to repair a side panel of the belt that he somehow managed to break within less than three days of winning the crown.
