Israel Adesanya shut down immediate rematch with Sean Strickland division move on UFC 293

Despite both Israel Adesanya and his City Kickboxing head coach, Eugene Bareman noting their interest in an immediate title fight rematch with newly-crowned champion, Sean Strickland off the back of a staggering decision loss at UFC 293 over the weekend, UFC color commentator, Daniel Cormier has claimed now is the time for the division to “move on”.

Adesanya, a now-former two-time undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC, headlined the promotion’s return to Sydney, Australia over the course of last weekend, in an attempted title defense against Strickland.

And suffering his second loss in his three most recent Octagon appearances, Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya dropped a shocking, relatively one-sided unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) loss to Covina challenger, Strickland, dropping his undisputed middleweight championship.

Remaining coy on his earth-shattering upset loss to the outspoken challenger after UFC 293, Adesanya has been backed to challenge Strickland in an immediate title fight rematch by UFC leader, Dana White, as well as his coach, Bareman.

Israel Adesanya should not receive a title rematch after UFC 293, per Daniel Cormier

However, as far as Hall of Fame inductee and former two-weight champion, Daniel Cormier, Adesanya should not be afforded another immediate championship rematch after his loss to Strickland at UFC 293.

“The last time Izzy (Israel Adesanya) lost, all we could speak about was he should be next again,” Daniel Cormier said after UFC 293. “I don’t think that this time – I don’t think he should fight for the belt next. I don’t think he should get an automatic rematch. I think the division needs to move on a little bit.”

“It’s like a brand new world, right?” He continued. “Like ‘The Little Mermaid’ – a whole new world. Sean Strickland now opens up the possibility of so many fresh matchups. (Jared) Cannonier just weighed in and also has a victory over Sean Strickland.”

Joe Rogan Sean Strickland UFC 293

Joe Rogan was highly impressed with Sean Strickland’s performance at UFC 293. The brash middleweight did the unthinkable and upset the now former champion Israel Adesanya, and even made it look easy.

The performance was a clear display that styles make fights and we saw Adesanya struggle to connect when faced with Strickland’s almost immaculate defense and constant pressure. Forced to fight on the backfoot the entire fight, and almost finished in round one, ‘The Last Stylebender’ lost every round of the fight in Joe Rogan’s eyes.

“I think it’s five (to) zero,” Joe Rogan began, discussing the fight between Strickland and Adesanya. “Sean Strickland is the new middleweight champion of the world, that is f****** crazy.”

Joe Rogan speaks on the Strickland vs. Adesanya fight and a potential rematch between the two

“There’s one round where Izzy might’ve won. Might’ve, but I don’t think he did. All those significant strikes, that’s all nonsense. You’re looking at leg kicks that get checked, you can’t count that.”

While watching a replay of the fight, Joe Rogan and his buddies continued to comment on what a spectacular moment they were witnessing. Rogan even expressed some regret that he wasn’t there to work that event as an announcer.

“The rematch is 100% big money, and that’s what would be smart to do… Unbelievable, he f****** did it. That wild motherf***** is the middleweight champion of the world. God, I wish I was there. I wish I was there for that.”

Rogan did say that Adesanya had class in defeat, but there was no doubt that Rogan and his compatriots were completely astounded and blown away by the incredible performance of Sean Strickland.

“He f****** did it,” Joe Rogan continued, obviously extremely happy for the newly crowned champion. “He’s got the UFC middleweight championship title around his waist, and he beat the best ever, in his prime. Unbelievable.”

Conor McGregor is allegedly open to moving up to 185lbs and challenging Sean Strickland for the title after his insane performance at UFC 293.

Sean Strickland shocked the world on Saturday night as he walked down Israel Adesanya and utilized his defense and pressure to neutralize ‘The Last Stylebender’. The first round almost ended with a TKO as well, but Adesanya was able to weather the storm after getting dropped by Strickland.

After five rounds, the victor was clear. Sean Strickland was crowned as the new UFC middleweight champion of the world, and Adesanya was apparently so disgusted with his own performance that he didn’t even stick around for a post-fight interview inside the octagon.

Conor McGregor responds to fan who says he should move up to middleweight

After the performance, McGregor would take to Twitter and share his thoughts about the situation. “The ‘spar only’ method crowns the new UFC middleweight world champion,” McGregor began. “Well done Sean. Unlucky Izzy. Two quality operators as well as completely opposite characters facing off, where else would you get it? Incredible! What a sport. What a company! @ufc is King.”

After this, a fan mentioned that this would be a good time to move up to the middleweight division, and McGregor played along. “Conor move up to 185 this is your chance,” the random fan said. ‘The Notorious’ would reply in classic fashion, humoring the guy by saying: “No mess, I’d fancy it.”

Conor McGregor would even go a step further by replying to another tweet. “Next fight 170lbs?” The tweet read. McGregor would reply and simply say: “185(lbs).” This would surely be a sight to see, but likely would never happen. Conor McGregor made his start to the UFC fighting at featherweight and now fights in the lightweight and welterweight divisions (according to when he feels like cutting weight).

Dana White Manel Kape UFC 293

The UFC president Dana White seems to be an avid believer in free speech, as he refuses to force fighters to apologize for saying things, even if those things happen to include homophobic slurs.

At UFC 293, a moment of great promotional footage was ruined when UFC flyweight Manel Kape called Kai Kara France’s teammates a bunch of f****** at the tail end of what was a compelling callout by Kape. Earlier in the night, Charlie Radtke also said a homophobic term after his fight, which in today’s day and age is definitely not kosher.

When asked about these homophobic terms by reporters, Dana White defended his fighters and claimed they just got lost in the excitement of the moment. “I think these guys get a little excited and they make bad mistakes,” White said (H/T MMA Junkie). “Radtke did the same thing, and you know me: we didn’t run over to him and say ‘you better apologize’. He did that on his own.”

Dana White defends his fighters for homophobic slur use at UFC 293

“We make mistakes,” White continued. “I am not holier than thou either, so we’ve all been in positions where we’ve made mistakes. Like I always say, it’s how you recover from it and how you carry yourself after you make the mistake.”

“He came out and apologized on his own free will,” Dana White said. “We didn’t tell him to do anything, and the fact that he did that means he means it. I don’t make anybody apologize for anything. You do what you want. You’re grown men and women. You’re able to say what you want. He did it. He was embarrassed and he apologized. I’m sure some people will accept his apology and some people won’t.”

Both Kape and Radtke apologized for what they said, and it seems no punishment will be doled out by the UFC. It’s honestly a little bit contradictory when you reflect on the time that former UFC superstar Nate Diaz wrote a Tweet that included a homophobic slur and promptly got suspended by the UFC. The Diaz suspension happened back in 2013, roughly a decade before the famous incident on New Year’s Eve where Dana White was filmed slapping his wife across the face mid-argument.

White received no penalty for that event, and perhaps it’s even why he’s seemingly being more lenient now compared to the UFC’s actions in handling the Diaz situation back in 2013.

What do you think about Kape and Radtke saying homophobic slurs at UFC 293, and the way Dana White is handling the situation?

du Plessis, the current number one ranked middleweight contender, earned his slot at the top of the competitive weight class back in July during International Fight Week, stopping former undisputed middleweight champion, Robert Whittaker with a massive second round TKO victory.

Missing out on a quickfire return in a title grudge match with Adesanya through a lingering injury, du Plessis watched on last night at Covina native, Strickland managed to turn in one of the biggest upset wins in title fight history, defeating the City Kickboxing staple with a unanimous decision win in Sydney, Australia.

Dricus du Plessis stakes claim for title fight with Sean Strickland

And appearing to note his interest in a return to competition in a title affair against the hugely outspoken, Strickland, du Plessis insisted it made no difference as to whom he fought in his first title outing under the UFC banner – remaining confident of striking spoils.

“Makes no difference to me, the belt is coming home,” Dricus du Plessis posted on his official X account after the culmination of UFC 293.

Prior to his knockout win over former champion, Whittaker, du Plessis had turned in other notable stoppages of common-foes, Derek Brunson, and former welterweight title challenger, Darren Till.

And while the Pretoria native has sights fixed on a title fight in his return to the Octagon, UFC leader, Dana White has stressed his desire to book an immediate championship rematch between Strickland and Adesanya

Israel Adesanya coy after UFC 293 loss to Sean Strickland I wasn't going to say much win or lose UFC 293

Appearing defeated morally and literally following the culmination of UFC 293 last night, now-former undisputed middleweight champion, Israel Adesanya handed media responsibilities to his head coach, Eugene Bareman off the back of his staggering upset loss to Sean Strickland, claiming that he would have remained coy on the outing regardless of result.

Adesanya, a two-time and now-former undisputed middleweight champion under the banner of the UFC, suffered a wholly shocking loss to Covina native, Strickland in the main event of UFC 293 last night in Sydney, Australia, dropping his crown in a massive upset unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) loss to the outspoken challenger.

Also suffering his first-ever official knockdown in the Octagon last night, Adesanya, who was pinned to the fence by the boxing-heavy Strickland, was dropped with a clean jab-straight combination late in the opening round, surviving and battling his way back to his corner – before dropping rounds three, four, and the fifth and final on all judge’s scorecards.

Israel Adesanya remains hugely coy after UFC 293 loss to Sean Strickland

Electing to carry out media obligations, albeit briefly after UFC 293, Adesanya claimed he was planning to speak less in the aftermath of the event, win or lose, before handing the microphone over to his City Kickboxing coach, Bareman.

“Pause – I had a different plan for this,” Israel Adesanya told assembled media after UFC 293. “But life throws curve balls at you. Win or lose, I wasn’t going to say much anyway. But right now, I lost tonight to the better man on the night. I just want to go be with people who care about me: my team. They’re waiting for me, so I’m going to go do that.”

“But, I’m going to leave you in the capable hands of a man who is much smarter than me,” Israel Adesanya explained. “I’ll admit this on worldwide, national media. I’ll leave it with Eugene Bareman. He’ll handle this for the first time. I’m going to go chill, have some breakfast, build my family, until next time.”

According to UFC president, Dana White, the promotional head-honcho wants to book an immediate title fight rematch between Strickland and Adesanya following last night’s shocking upset at UFC 293.
