Sean O'Malley hilariously shuts down Aljamain Sterling call for rematch during UFC 293

Appearing to skirt a future title defense at the bantamweight limit against the streaking, Merab Dvalishvili in his Octagon return –  newly-minted champion, Sean O’Malley has shut down an immediate title defense rematch with Aljamain Sterling next, after the Uniondale native called for a re-run during the broadcast of UFC 293 last night.

O’Malley, just the second fighter from Dana White’s Contender Series to land Octagon gold, managed to do so last month in the main event of UFC 292, toppling the dominant Sterling with a spectacular second round TKO victory in Boston, Massachusetts.

And targeting a comeback to the Octagon before the close of this year – potentially on December 16. at UFC 296 in Las Vegas, Nevada, O’Malley has firmly set sights on a bid to avenge his sole professional loss in a showdown against former-foe, Marlon Vera.

Sean O’Malley claps back at Aljamain Sterling during UFC 293 broadcast

However, as for Sterling, the Serra-Longo MMA mainstay has made his thoughts on his future clear, displaying a note for O’Malley on his phone – calling for an immediate title rematch on the broadcast of UFC 293.

Seated back home in the United States and obviously tuning into watch the action at UFC 293 last night in Sydney, Australia – O’Malley clapped back and definitively shut down calls from Sterling for a rematch, simply showing his own phone screen with the word, “No”.

Expected to pursue a title rematch with Vera next, as mentioned above, Montana native, O’Malley has already shut down the possibility of a clash with Georgia native, Dvalishvili, claiming his win over Sterling in August is as good as a win over the Tbilisi grappling star.

“I knocked out Merab (Dvalishvili) on August 19th, the same night I knocked out Aljo (Aljamain Sterling),” Sean O’Malley said. “They’re the same, they hold hands, they’re the same person. I knocked them both out August 19th, so we’ll see what happens. I’ve called out the ‘Chito’ fight before me versus Aljo, before Pedro versus ‘Chito’.”

“I said, ‘Hey, ‘Chito’ goes out there and wins, I go out there and win, I’m fighting ‘Chito’ for my first title defense,’ And that’s what happened,” Sean O’Malley explained. That’s what’s going to happen next in my eyes. That’s what I want, but at the end of the day, I’ll go out there and knock out whoever they [the UFC] put in front of me.”

Sean Strickland claims Israel Adesanya didn't try UFC 293 fighting an amateur

Newly-minted undisputed middleweight champion, Sean Strickland has questioned if former titleholder, Israel Adesanya actually even tried to put his best foot forward in his shocking title-clinching victory at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia last night – claiming he felt like he was fighting an “amateur”.

Strickland, who headlined his first pay-per-view event under the banner of the organization last night ‘Down Under’, managed to turn in one of the biggest and high-profile upset wins in the history of the UFC, landing a unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) victory over the defending, Adesanya.

Winning rounds one, three, four, and five against the City Kickboxing staple, Strickland also managed to become the first fighter in the history of the promotion to be officially credited with a knockdown against the Nigerian-Kiwi, catching Adesanya flush in the dying embers of the first round to steal the frame.

Sean Strickland questioned if Israel Adesanya actually tried at UFC 293

Overcome with emotion following his earth-shattering title victory at the Qudos Bank Arena, Strickland admitted that while the happiness of winning Octagon gold has now come and gone and washed over him, he questioned if Adesanya even tried to successfully defend his crown.

“I feel like the guy (Israel Adesanya) didn’t even f*cking try,” Sean Strickland told assembled media after his UFC 293 championship win. “There were moments where he was throwing punches and I was like, ‘Am I fighting an amateur right now, what the f*ck is going on?’”

“I thought I was going to be leaving with a concussion, but I feel relatively fine other than a few bumps and bruises,” Sean Strickland continued.

Whilst turning in a stunning upset win over Adesanya to shake up the middleweight division entirely, Strickland has already been pegged to rematch the former gold holder immediately by promotional president, Dana White, who claimed the former champion looked like he was fighting in “slow motion” last night at UFC 293.

Dana White confirms plan for Sean Strickland and Israel Adesanya rematch UFC 293 title fight

Following Israel Adesanya’s shocking loss to Sean Strickland at UFC 293, Dana White suggested that an immediate rematch is the way to go.

Emanating from the Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, fight fans were treated to an exciting night of scraps, but by the time the evening was over, all anybody could talk about was Strickland’s dominant performance against ‘The Last Stylebender’ to claim the middleweight world title. Once the reality of the situation set in, everyone’s attention quickly turned to what would be next for both Strickland and Adesanya.

Addressing members of the media, UFC President Dana White suggested that an immediate rematch is what makes the most sense to him, but it will ultimately come down to what Adesanya wants to do.

“I think you do the rematch, absolutely. I think the rematch is interesting,” White said during the post-fight press event. “That could be the thing too. When you think about you’re going into the Pereira fight. Such a big fight and you’ve been in there with this guy so many times and then you overlook Strickland. I don’t know. I don’t know the answers to these questions, but Israel does and I’m looking forward to hearing it.”

There are Far More Intriguing Matchups Than Strickland vs. Adesanya 2

Considering Adesanya regained the title in an immediate rematch against long-time foe Alex Pereira in April, many fight fans on social media were quick to speak out against the possibility of the ‘Stylebender’ running it back with Sean Strickland right away. Not to mention the UFC’s backlog of top-ten fighters looking for their own opportunity to fight for the title.

The matchup that makes the most sense would see Sean Strickland defending against the division’s No. 1 ranked contender, Dricus Du Plessis. But perhaps a new middleweight contender will emerge at UFC 294 next month when Paulo Costa returns to take on undefeated Chechen monster Khamzat Chimaev. Then you have Jared Cannonier who actually holds a victory over the new middleweight champ.

Needless to say, there are far more interesting matchups than Strickland vs. Adesanya 2.

Conor McGregor congratulated the new UFC middleweight world champion, Sean Strickland.

On Saturday night, ‘Tarzan’ shocked the world by delivering a picture-perfect five-round performance against Israel Adesanya to capture his first UFC title. ‘The Last Stylebender’ went into the bout as a seven-to-one favorite on multiple sportsbooks, and while some suggested Strickland’s conservative striking method could give Adesanya some trouble, nobody expected the California native to win four rounds against the UFC’s only two-time middleweight titleholder.

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) following the stacked night of fights, Conor McGregor offered some words of encouragement to Strickland and once again shared his love and appreciation for his employer.

“The “spar only” method crowns the new ufc middleweight world champion,” McGregor wrote. “Well done Sean. Unlucky Izzy. Two quality operators as well as complete opposite characters facing off, where else would you get it. Incredible! What a sport. What a company! @ufc is King.”

What’s Next for Sean Strickland?

With the victory, Sean Strickland moved to 15-5 inside the Octagon, and 28-5 overall. As for what comes next, a fight with top-ranked contender Dricus Du Plessis certainly sounds intriguing given each fighter’s unique style. There is also the possibility of an immediate rematch, though that would likely be a hard sell for fight fans considering how dominant Strickland was against the ‘Stylebender’ at UFC 293. Not to mention Adesanya just regained the title from an immediate rematch against Alex Pereira in April.

Then you have to factor in October’s highly anticipated clash with Paulo Costa and Khamzat Chimaev at UFC 294. That bout could certainly present a new potential contender in the division that would be far more intriguing than yet another immediate rematch.

Charlie Radtke drops homophobic slur, insults Australian crowd in vile post-fight interview at UFC 293

Charlie Radtke

Welterweight debutant Charlie Radtke made a big first impression with his first appearance inside the Octagon on Saturday night. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the impression that one would typically want to make.

Stepping into the cage for a scrap with Mike Mathetha, aka Blood Diamond during the early UFC 293 prelims, Charlie Radtke scored a solid win after dominating Diamond up against the fence for a majority of the 15 minutes. Radtke’s strategy, though effective, wasn’t necessarily fan-friendly and as a result, drew a fair amount of boos from the crowd.

Following the announcement of his unanimous decision victory, Daniel Cormier joined Radtke inside the Octagon for a post-fight interview that got really awkward, really fast.

Asked how it felt to get his first UFC win, Ratke said it felt great and then immediately proceeded to turn on the crowd by calling everyone in attendance a homophobic slur.

“F*ck all you f****ts up in the f*cking crowd,” Radtke shouted. “Come down here and get some you p*ssy a** b*tch.”

A flabbergasted Cormier immediately wrapped up the interview and left the Octagon. Charlie Radtke was then escorted to the back with plenty of security details as the Australian crowd continued to boo him.

Could Charlie Radtke Find Himself in Trouble Following His Disgusting Post-Fight Comments?

Needless to say, fans following along on X were quick to condemn Charle Radtke’s ignorant and insensitive comments, suggesting he be released from the roster immediately. Unfortunately, Dana White has a history of turning the other cheek when his fighters offer up racial and homophobic slurs on a hot mic. Will this time be any different?

Maybe not when it comes to the UFC, but Charlie Radtke could find himself in trouble with the local authorities in New South Wales. As pointed out by MMA journalist Aaron Bronsteter on X, homosexual vilification is against the law. What exactly does that me? According to the anti-discrimination laws of New South Wales, “It is a public act that could incite hatred, serious contempt, or serious ridicule towards people who are homosexual.”

In one of the most shocking upset victories in the Octagon’s antiquity, massive betting underdog, Sean Strickland has landed the undisputed middleweight championship tonight in the main event of UFC 293 — scoring a first round knockdown against Israel Adesanya en route to a jaw-dropping unanimous decision (49-46, 49-46, 49-46) win at UFC 293 in Sydney, Australia.

Strickland, who entered a championship challenge for the first time in his Octagon tenure tonight, became the first fighter in the UFC to score an official knockdown against Adesanya, countering the City Kickboxing staple at the Octagon fence in the opening frame, landing a flush one-two combination and sending the Nigerian-Kiwi to the canvas.

Likely suffering a round defeat in the second frame, the hugely-outspoken Covina native forced Adesanya to fight from the fence and on the back foot in the third, fourth, and fifth round throughout their middleweight title headliner — turning in a spectacular upset victory, with a unanimous decision win over the defending champion ‘Down Under’.
