Dana White rips Charles Oliveira for suffering $2 millon headbutt ahead of Islam Makhachev rematch

In new, previously unseen footage, UFC CEO, Dana White voiced his dismay at former lightweight champion, Charles Olvieira’s decision to spar without headgear just weeks from his scheduled title rematch with Islam Makhachev last October – with matchmaker, Sean Shelby alluding to a $2,000,000 payday missed out on as a result for the Brazilian.

Oliveira, the current number two ranked lightweight contender, has been sidelined since he featured on the main card of UFC 300 back in April, suffering a controversial split decision defeat to surging contender, Arman Tsarukyan in the pair’s title-eliminator.

Prior to that loss, Oliveira was slated to headline UFC 294 late last year in Abu Dhabi, tackling the above-mentioned, Makhachev in a title fight rematch.

However, just days from the pairing, Sao Paulo star, Oliveira was forced to withdraw from the clash, suffering a sizeable laceration over his right eyebrow – with the promotion drafting Alexander Volkanovski in on short-notice to take on Makhachev in his own rematch.

“How about this – how about if they [Charles Oliveira’s team] call us and let us f*cking fix it and tell them what to do,” Dana White said. “Yeah, that’s f*cking – that is a nasty – what were they doing? Wrestling?”

“Sparring with no headgear, the week before he (Charles Oliveira) leaves for the fight [with Islam Makhachev] – no, the day, he’s supposed to leave [for Abu Dhabi] today,” Dana White continued. “The night before. He’s going [training] the night before, sparring with no f*cking headgear. That cost them big money.”

Amid criticizm from rival, Jamahal Hill for his viral celebration over him at UFC 300 – more than two months ago, undisputed light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira claimed the victory pose was a surefire example of Hill just reaping what he had previously sowed during fight week.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight titleholder and the incumbent light heavyweight standard, has been sidelined since he toppled the above-mentioned Hill in brutal fashion in the main event of UFC 300 months ago, successfully defending his 205lbs title for the first time.

Receiving criticizm from Illinois native, Hill two months on from his knockout loss, Pereira was blasted for his viral celebration over the fallen former – who then claimed he would leave him “stiff” in a title fight rematch.

Hill, the current number three ranked divisional contender, is slated to make his return at the end of this month at UFC 303 during International Fight Week, taking on Carlos Ulberg in a reworked clash on the card’s co-main event.

Six weeks removed from his brutal knockout loss at UFC 300, Justin Gaethje is already back in the gym.

After claiming the BMF title with a sensational second-round head-kick KO against Dustin Poirier last summer, ‘The Highlight’ became the first man to defend the bragging rights belt. Featuring at the promotion’s landmark event on April 13, Gaethje stepped inside the Octagon with former featherweight champion Max Holloway and delivered an instant classic.

Unfortunately, things would not go Gaethje’s way as the former interim titleholder suffered a brutal buzzer-beating knockout, ending his short run with the BMF belt and effectively taking him out of the lightweight title picture for the time being.

Justin Gaethje vs. Holloway

Less than two months removed from the four-minute and 49-second war, Justin Gaethje is already trying to get back into the swing of things, courtesy of a video clip shared on the fan favorites’ Instagram.

“Trying to get back in the routine, ” he wrote.

What’s next for Justin Gaethje?

We’re still a long way off from seeing Justin Gaethje back inside the Octagon as he previously told MMA Hangout that he wanted to take at least six months off before jumping back into full-on training.

“Metaphorically, I could be ready tomorrow, but physically, I do want to take care of myself,” Gaethje said. “I do think that repeated concussions, with me going to sleep like that, me receiving that shot, it would be foolish for me to jump back into training anytime before 180 days.

“I could do cardio, I can stay in shape, that’s what I want to try and do — especially [with] the older I get, the harder it is to get back to the best shape of my life, so I want to stay active. Obviously, the physical contact is going to be limited for quite some time, just because I want to preserve myself. … I think six months, at least, before I get back to taking shots. But that doesn’t say that I won’t be training the whole time” (h/t MMA Fighting).

Who he faces in his inevitable return will ultimately come down to how things play out at the top of the division over the next several months.

On Saturday, June 1, reigning lightweight world champion Islam Makhachev is scheduled to defend his title against two-time Gaethje opponent Dustin Poirier in the UFC 302 headliner. It will likely be Poirier’s final shot at gold as ‘The Diamond’ has already been talking about retirement following the fight — win or lose.

Makhachev vs. Poirier

Should Makhachev survive ‘The Diamond,’ he’ll likely find himself paired up with No. 1 ranked contender Arman Tsarukyan this October when the UFC makes its annual fall pit stop in Abu Dhabi.

How those two fights shake out will determine what comes next for Gaethje and ‘The Highlight’ guns for one more shot at the 155-pound crown before laying down his own gloves.

Former undisputed lightweight champion, Charles Oliveira has revealed his coaches had to talk him away from a planned return as soon as International Fight Week at the end of June – forcing the Sao Paulo to postpone a comeback until the following month.

Oliveira, a former undisputed lightweight titleholder, and the current number two ranked division contender, featured on the main card of UFC 300 last month, suffering a contentious split decision loss to Arman Tsarukyan in the pair’s officially billed title eliminator.

And vowing to make a quickfire return as he weighed up fights with both former foes, Justin Gaethje, and Max Holloway, Oliveira argued his case that he actually should have got the nod from the seated judges against Tsarukyan, pointing to his numerous close submission attempts.

“I didn’t break a sweat [at UFC 300],” Charles Oliveira told AgFight during a recent interview. “So I just left wanting to fight and still continue with that mentality of fighting. I wanted to fight in International Fight Week, which is in June, and [Diego] Lima stopped me, said ‘Calm down, breathe’.”

“The team said to take a breath, so that’s what I’m doing,” Charles Oliveira explained. “I’m breathing, I’m calm, but I want to fight in July or August.”

Charles Oliveira weighs up welterweight leap after UFC 300 loss why not move up and do a big fight

With desired opponent, Justin Gaethje confirming plans to take a lengthy hiatus from the Octagon after his loss earlier this month, ex-champion, Charles Oliveira has admitted he would consider a leap to 170 pounds in search of activity after his UFC 300 defeat.

Oliveira, a former undisputed lightweight champion and contender at the featherweight limit, most recently featured just earlier this month in a championship-contender fight with Arman Tsarukyan, narrowly dropping a contentious split decision defeat.

And chasing another run at gold, Oliveira, who competed at the featherweight limit all the way up to a title-eliminator loss to former lightweight kingpin, Anthony Pettis back in 2016, admitted the chance to fight at welterweight next would be something he would definitely entertain.

Charles Oliveira weighs up potential 170lbs move

“Why not?” Charles Oliveira told MMA Fighting. “Why not take a fight that will lead us to money and history and legacy? We have to think about it and talk to the organization [UFC]. Why not move up in weight and do a big fight? A fight that makes sense and gives us money? Why not?”

And with sights on a potential welterweight move, Oliveira sounded out a potential showdown with former two-weight champion, Conor McGregor – who incidentally, fights Michael Chandler at 170 pounds at UFC 303 at the end of June.

“I think Conor (McGregor) [beats Michael Chandler at UFC 303],” Charles Oliveira said. “Man, everyone knows – in fact, I’ve asked for this fight against Conor a thousand times.”

“But it’s a fight that I don’t think he wants this fight,” Charles Oliveira explained. “And everyone knows it. I’ve said it a thousand times, it’s a fight that will bring me a lot of money. So, I would like it.”
