Jamahal Hill's early return from injury at UFC 300 could prove disastrous: 'He tore his Achilles clean off'

Jamahal Hill will return to the Octagon on April 13 to headline UFC 300, challenging the promotion’s reigning and defending light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira. It will be Hill’s first fight back since suffering a ruptured Achilles during a charity basketball game in July.

Yes, you read that right. July…

‘Sweet Dreams’ is looking to reclaim the crown he never lost a mere nine months removed from one of the worst lower limb injuries you can sustain in sports. The announcement quickly prompted pundits to accuse the UFC of rushing Hill’s comeback in a desperate attempt to deliver a viable main event for its star-studded event in Las Vegas.

Alex Pereira vs. Jamahal Hill

Tim Welch, the head coach of current UFC bantamweight champion Sean O’Malley, is currently rehabbing the same injury that Hill suffered and offered his take on the recovery process via his YouTube channel.

“Jamahal Hill, he tore his Achilles clean off, just like I did, last July, which is nine months ago,” Welch said. “My surgeon told me I’m not gonna be close to 100 percent until 12 months. He’s at nine months! My surgeon said, ‘You’re not gonna be able to run for a full year.’ They say these Achilles tears are worse than ACL (tears).”

Tim Welch questions the quality of jamahal hill’s fight camp ahead of UFC 300

The announcement of Pereira vs. Hill was met with little fanfare prompting ‘Sweet Dream’ to come to the promotion’s defense following the immediate backlash. ‘Sweet Dreams’ also attempted to quell any concerns about his injury, suggesting that his recovery was ahead of schedule and would be a non-issue come fight night.

“I’m really curious with Jamahal Hill, how much rehab and how well he rehabbed this Achilles,” Welch added. “For me, I was able to do everything under the sun. I was able to do stem cells, all the peptides, I ate the best possible (way), a carnivore diet… didn’t get real fat while I was healing this injury. I’m only about 19 weeks out from my surgery and this puppy is still tight… He’s a couple months farther along than me, but I’m really curious, how well did he rehab this puppy? How long ago did he start this fight camp?”

Meanwhile, Alex Periera has suggested that if he makes it out of UFC 300 relatively unscathed, he has every intention of headlining the promotion’s return to Rio de Janeiro three weeks later, taking advantage of an opportunity to compete in front of his home country.

Max Holloway is stacking bodies ahead of his highly anticipated BMF title clash with Justin Gaethje at UFC 300.

On Saturday, April 13, two of the greatest strikers in MMA history will collide in what is already being dubbed by pundits as “the people’s main event.”

Justin Gaethje vs. Max Holloway at UFC 300

For Gaethje, it will be nothing more than a pit stop before his inevitable title clash with lightweight king Islam Makhachev. But for Holloway, it’s an opportunity to disrupt the established order and potentially interject himself into a loaded lightweight top five.

As such, ‘Blessed’ is preparing for an all-out war, as seen in a video clip released by the UFC and shared by Championship Rounds on X.

During the 35-second snippet, Holloway can be seen dropping multiple sparring partners ahead of his showdown with ‘The Highlight’ in Las Vegas.

After Smashing the competition at featherweight, Max Holloway sets his sights on one of the lightweight division’s all-time greats

The former featherweight world champion goes into the bout fresh off a brutal third-round knockout of The Korean Zombie at UFC Singapore in August. Holloway also holds notable wins against Arnold Allen, Yair Rodrigues, Calvin Kattar, Frankie Edgar, Brian Ortega, Jose Aldo, Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis, Charles Oliveira, and Clay Collard. In fact, the only losses ‘Blessed’ has absorbed in his last 10 years at featherweight have come against one man — Alexander Volkanovski.

Holloway’s move up to lightweight at UFC 300 will be just the second time he has competed in the division, the first coming at UFC 236 when he challenged Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight title. ‘The Diamond’ earned a decision victory, snapping a 13-fight win streak for Holloway.

Max Holloway vs. Dustin Poirier

As for Justin Gaethje, ‘The Highlight’ is coming off an earth-shattering second-round head-kick KO against Poirier to claim the BMF title last summer. At this point, Gaethje is all, but guaranteed an opportunity at the 155-pound crown once he takes care of a bit of business with Holloway. However, ‘Blessed’ aims to derail those plans and ultimately steal Gaethje’s spot in line.

“I believe things happen for a reason,” Holloway said in an interview with Kevin Iole. “At the end of the day, I’m in a situation or I’m in a place where first thing’s first is Gaethje. But I can go out there and get my hand raised like we plan on doing, there’s a lot of fights that can be there. One of them is the 155-pound champ, which I think would be a fun one. So at the end of the day, I ain’t got no regrets.

“Everything happens for a reason. Stuff falls through all the time, but I’m still on this path to [the championship]. That’s why I’m still here today.”

Charles Oliveira eyes Conor McGregor fight after UFC 300 that's the one we want

Slated to make his return to the Octagon next weekend at UFC 300 in a pivotal main card clash against Arman Tsarukyan, former divisional champion, Charles Oliveira has sights firmly fixed on a clash with ex-two-weight champion, Conor McGregor next – according to his head coach.

Oliveira, the current number one ranked lightweight contender, most recently featured in the co-main event of UFC 289 last summer, turning in a dominant first round knockout win over the surging Beneil Dariush with a ground strikes finish.

And taking on streaking Armenian contender, Tsarukyan next weekend on the monumental UFC 300 card, Sao Paulo native, Charles Oliveira would likely veto a long-ancitipated rematch with rival, Islam Makhachev with a victory next weekend – in favor of a welterweight clash with McGregor.

“It would be great to fight (Conor) McGregor,” Diego Lima told MMA Fighting. “Professionally speaking, [fighting McGregor[ would be incredible. If we had the opportunity to fight McGregor at welterweight after this fight [with Arman Tsarukyan], we would fight McGregor. But how abou the belt. OK, we’ll fight the belt after that, God willing. But we know that with McGregor, the creature has become bigger than the creator.”

“We know that if the opportunity came, McGregor already considered this fight – if we really had this opportunity, that’s the one we want,” Lima explained.

Himself expected to finally snap his hiatus from the Octagon this summer in a comeback fight, McGregor has earmarked a June comeback against soon-to-be common-foe, Michael Chandler, in what would come as his first outing since 2021.

Billed to feature in an official title-eliminator against Tsarukyan next week, Oliveira may have to lay in a wait anyway to fight Makhachev in the future – with the Russian linked with a June return at UFC 302 in New Jersey, in a championship defense against former interim champion, Dustin Poirier.

Jiri Prochazka reveals post-USADA drug testing ahead of UFC 300 they made us pull our pants down

Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jiri Prochazka is set to return to the Octagon at UFC 300 against Aleksandar Rakic in a critical fight for the division.

It’s Prochazka’s first fight of 2024, which marks the first time he is competing with USADA no longer handling the UFC’s drug tests. Prochazka had been one of the most tested fighters by USADA, and with the new company making over, many wondered if that would still be the case.

According to Jiri Prochazka, he says the drug tests aren’t as frequent as USADA was, but it still is very thorough.

“From the new year it’s no longer USADA, it’s the UFC’s anti-doping agency,” Prochazka told press in the Czech Republic, via MMAMania. “They came to see me last Sunday from Vienna. I must say it was one of the most thorough inspections I’ve ever had. When providing the sample, I felt like I was in kindergarten when we had to pull our pants down all the way to our ankles. The inspection went thoroughly!

Jiri Prochakza enters his UFC 300 fight against Aleksandar Rakic as the betting underdog, and is coming off a knockout loss to Alex Pereira for the light heavyweight title.

Jiri Prochazka plans to ‘realize the mastery’ at UFC 300

Speaking to LowKickMMA recently, Prochazka is confident he will be able to beat Rakic as he thinks it is a good style matchup for him.

“He’s a 50/50 fighter,” Prochazka said to LowKick. “He’s a good wrestler. A really strong guy I think. His standup is not the best, but like I said, he’s 50/50. Good striker. Good wrestler and I’m ready for both… I want to realize the mastery. Not just in the training. Not just in the daily life. Repeat, repeat. Be better. Be better, but in the cage. To show it in the cage. That’s what I want to show.”

If Prochazka beats Rakci at UFC 300, he could very well get a title shot next time out.

Justin Gaethje promises violent fight with Max Holloway at UFC 300 the doctor's gonna have to stop it

Ahead of his massive symbolic BMF championship fight with Max Holloway next weekend at UFC 300, former interim lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje has promised a “violent” fight with the Hawaiian, predicting a doctor’s stoppage finish.

Gaethje, the current number two ranked lightweight contender and former interim titleholder, has been sidelined since he turned in an hellacious second round high-kick KO win over common-foe, Dustin Poirier back in July at UFC 291, landing the symbolic BMF crown.

And as for Holloway, the former dominant featherweight gold holder turned in his second straight win at UFC Singapore last summer, stopping Chan Sung Jung with a brutal walk-off knockout win, which followed a decision success against Arnold Allen.

Justin Gaethje plots doctor’s stoppage TKO win over Max Holloway

Sharing his thoughts on his symbolic title fight with the fan-favorite next weekend on the main card of UFC 300, Gaethje claimed a “violent” clash was in store for onlookers in ‘Sin City’ – predicting a doctor’s stoppage win over the former featherweight champion.

Justin Gaethje

“No one steals the show quite like ‘The Highlight’,” Justin Gaethje said during the UFC 300 promotional release. “Carnage, chaos, probably some blood and adrenaline coursing though the veins, that is what you are going to get from me. My ability to create damage is second to none. Max Holloway is a legend, probably the only person on the UFC roster that checks every single box of being a BMF so I have a lot of respect for him.”

“However, this is my job and I’m going to try and f*ck him up,” Justin Gaethje explained. “I will finish Max, he may not go away the traditional way, but I think I will inflict damage to where the doctors need to stop it [the fight]. We are about to paint a violent picture and no two better guys to go out there and put on a show.”

Combat sports legend Mark Coleman is headed to UFC 300.

The promotion’s first-ever heavyweight world champion nearly lost his life in a devastating fire last month. Awaken by his pet dog in the middle, Coleman heroically carried both of his parents to safety, suffering smoke inhalation in the process. Fortunately, the two-time UFC Hall of Famer pulled through that and a subsequent bout with pneumonia before being given a full bill of health.

Mark Coleman

To honor ‘The Hammer’ and his heroic efforts, Dana White and Co. will host Coleman and his daughters for UFC 300 on April 13 in Las Vegas.

“I’m so excited today,” Coleman wrote in a video caption on Instagram. “The UFC is bringing me in giving me and my daughters tickets to the biggest show ever UFC 300 in Las Vegas. So stoked let’s go. The BMF belt that’s the one I’m excited about. The main event is huge as well. The whole card is sick. See you there. What a great day to be alive. Be the best version of yourself you can be you never know when you’re gonna need it. Sober is cool, carnivore diet, nine ancestral tenants, hammer House for life.”

Mark Coleman

In the video itself, Coleman said he’s feeling so good that he’ll step up and be the backup for any and every fighter on the card.

“What’s up everybody,” he said. “Good afternoon! I’m so excited. UFC is bringing me into UFC 300. I’m in training. I’m the backup for every fighter. Let’s go!”

Max Holloway wants Mark Coleman to present the BMF title at UFC 300

While we don’t expect to see the 59-year-old legend strap on the four-ounce gloves ever again, BMF title challenger Max Holloway suggested that Mark Coleman be the one who straps the bragging rights belt around the winner’s waist at UFC 300.

“The only correct answer is Mark Coleman,” Holloway told MMA Junkie when asked who should present the BMF title at UFC 300. “Especially with what he went through recently with his dog and his dog waking him to go save his stuff and he goes in there and runs for his dog? The guy’s a G. That’s a real life BMF. That would be sick if he did it. It would be an honor to get him to do it.”

Between 1996 and 2010, Mark Coleman competed against some of the biggest names in combat sports during his time in PRIDE and the UFC, including Gary Goodridge, Don Frye, Fedor Emelianenko, Mirko Cro Cop, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, and Randy Couture. In 2008, he was inducted into the Pioneer Wing of the UFC Hall of Fame. Eight years later, he would receive a second induction, this time into the Fight Wing for his classic clash with Pete Williams at UFC 17 in May 1998.

For all his accomplishes in the world of mixed martial arts, Coleman will forever be remembered as the UFC’s inaugural heavyweight champion, winning back-to-back tournaments at UFC 10 and UFC 11 before submitting Dan Severn with a scarf hold at UFC 12 to etch his name in the history books.
