Justin Gaethje reveals the biggest mistake he made in UFC loss to Max Holloway he fought perfectly

Justin Gaethje says he made a significant mistake against Max Holloway at UFC 300.

Gaethje was defending his BMF belt in the featured bout against Holloway in a very intriguing matchup. It was a fan-friendly fight, but going into the bout, Gaethje says he made a key mistake as he didn’t realize how much danger he was in by fighting the Hawaiian.

“I think if I made a mistake, the biggest mistake was not realizing or understanding through the camp how much danger I was in,” Justin Gaethje said to the Dan LeBatard show (via MMAMania). “I know that was a mistake now. I think it was more difficult for my body to go to a primal state because of my lack of awareness of the danger that that my body was in. Not that I didn’t give Max respect. It was more the fact that I never in my life saw Max as an opponent that I would potentially fight.

“He was always in a different weight class. I never was like, ‘This is a guy I wanna fight.’ There’s never been another fight in my career where I’ve been like, ‘I didn’t expect to fight this guy,’ or ‘I have too much respect for this guy.’ Not that I didn’t wanna hurt him, I was willing to hurt him,” Justin Gaethje clarified. “But the lead up was very different — even Donald Cerrone was my friend back in the day, but he he knocked me out in a practice in, like, 2010. So I was like, I wanna get that back.”

“The competitor of me wants to get that back. There was nothing, that fire wasn’t there. And I think that was probably the biggest mistake that I made going into this fight. It’s something that I that I’m gonna learn from. But again, all credit to Max for for the way that he fought. I think he fought so perfect.”

Justin Gaethje claims he's not done after UFC 300 loss to Max Holloway I will fight in the future

Justin Gaethje ended up suffering a knockout loss to Max Holloway with one second left in the fifth round to lose his BMF title.

Justin Gaethje plans to take time off after UFC 300 loss

Gaethje says he will be taking 180 days off of taking contact, as he wants to make sure he is 100 percent healthy for his next fight.

“I do want to take care of myself. I do think that repeated concussions with me going to sleep like that, me receiving that shot, it would be foolish for me to to jump back into training anytime before 180 days,” Gaethje said. “I could do cardio. I could stay in shape. That’s what I wanna try to do, especially the older I get, the harder it is to get back to the best shape of my life. So I wanna stay active. But obviously, the physical contact is gonna be limited for quite some time, just because I wanna preserve preserve myself. I think six months at least before I get back to taking shots.”

When and who Gaethje will fight in his return is uncertain.

Alex Pereira rejects UFC 308 clash with Magomed Ankalaev in Abu Dhabi I want to fight sooner

Receiving a call out for an October showdown in the Middle East by surging light heavyweight contender, Magomed Ankalaev, division champion, Alex Pereria appears less than interested in remaining sidelined until UFC 308 – favoring a quicker return to action.

Pereira, the current undisputed light heavyweight champion, headlined UFC 300 last weekend, successfully defending his division crown for the first time in a one-sided opening round knockout win over former champion, Jamahal Hill.

And as for Ankalaev, the Russian finisher returned at the UFC Apex facility back in January, rematching Pereira’s compatriot, Johnny Walker, where he scored a second round knockout win of his own.

Reacting to Pereira’s devastating first round stoppage against Hill earlier this month, Ankalaev vowed to turn his own knockout win against the Sao Paulo finisher, offering him a clash at FUC 308 in October

However, as far as Pereira is concerned, if Ankalaev cannot offer him a return sooner than October, he’ll likely skirt the bout in favor of a quicker comeback fight.

“I don’t want to fight at the end of the year,” Alex Pereira told MMA Fighting. “I want to fight sooner, so maybe that shows he (Magomed Ankalaev) won’t be ready. I don’t know why he said that.”

“This guy is complicated,” Alex Pereira explained. “Honestly, I have to see what’s best. I’m here to fight, but I don’t understand best about other things like where is best [to fight] and where isn’t. If I have to fight there, I will, but if it’s not a date I want, then it’s not best for me. I can say no.”

Winning light heavyweight gold last November, Pereira dispatched fellow UFC 300 feature, Jiri Prochazka in the pair’s vacant title clash at Madison Square Garden.

…Playing the accordion?

Days removed from decimating former titleholder Jamahal Hill in the UFC 300 main event, ‘Poatan’ was spotted on stage showing off his squeezebox skills.

Is there anything Alex Pereira can’t do? Well, besides getting a fight with Tom Aspinall.

Is Alex Pereira vs. Tom Aspinall the fight to make?

Immediately following his first defense of the 205-pound crown in ‘Sin City,’ Pereira lobbied for a heavyweight fight with the division’s interim champion. Though the fight itself may still be in the cards, his proposed date of May 4 — just a few short weeks away — is unlikely.

Alex Pereira and Tom Aspinall

Chances are, Pereira’s next fight inside the Octagon will come against No. 2 ranked contender Magomed Ankalaev. In January, the Russian standout scored his 10th straight win under the UFC banner, finishing Johnny Walker in the second round of their Fight Night headliner in January.

It’s also possible that Jiri Prochazka could sneak in and take the next title opportunity following his impressive come-from-behind victory over Aleksandar Rakic at the UFC’s landmark event in Las Vegas. But with Prochazka already carrying the weight of a loss to ‘Poatan’ and Ankalaev’s severe lack of star power, the UFC may see more value in pitting Pereira against Aspinall.

Jamahal Hill claims he took no damage in KO loss to Alex Pereira I remember everything

Already booked for his return to action just a week removed from his stunning KO loss to incumbent light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira atop UFC 300, ex-champion, Jamahal Hill claims the fact he took “no damage” against the Brazilian enabled him to book a June comeback.

Hill, the current number three ranked light heavyweight challenger and a former division gold holder, headlined UFC 300 over a week ago against Sao Paulo knockout ace, Pereira, dropping a devastating first round KO loss.

Sidelined since January of last year where he crowned himself division gold holder with a decision win over Pereira’s close friend and training partner, Glover Teixeira, Hill ruptured his achilles tendon last summer, forcing his vacating of the title.

And already set for a return to action as soon as June during International Fight Week, Illinois native, Hill takes on surging knockout artist, Khalil Rountree in a comeback fight at UFC 303

Vowing to earn a title fight rematch with former middleweight champion, Pereira last week, Hill also claimed that when he fights the GLORY KICKBOXING Hall of Fame star, he would score his own knockout win.

Commenting on his hasty booking against The Ultimate Fighter alum, Rountree, Hill claimed that his quickfire turnaround was aided by the fact he left UFC 300 unscathed.

“I took no damage,” Jamahal Hill said on his official YouTube channel. “Most of the fall was me falling down. I remember everything. I remember looking up, seeing his legs. I remember him (Alex Pereira) coming in, trying to block, trying to reach for the underhook. He was able to land some shorts and kind of throw my equilibrium off on the other side, but I was coherent the whole time throughout, for the most part. So, I take this on. We moving forward.”

Former UFC welterweight champion Kamrau Usman tips Alex Pereira for success at heavyweight, warns UFC big men to watch out.

Following his sensational first round knockout over Jamahal Hill in the main event of UFC 300, Alex Pereira’s legend has been taken to an extra level. While some still doubt his grappling ability, he has once again proven to be one of the most dangerous striker in all of MMA, regardless of weight.

In his post-fight speech Pereira expressed his desire to test the waters at heavyweight, opening the doors to many fun and fan-friendly fights. Prior to his booking against Hill, there had been talk, mostly rumours, of a fight between Tom Aspinall and Pereira.

Kamaru Usman predicts success for Alex Pereira at heavyweight

Talking on the Pound 4 Pound podcast alongside Henry Cejudo, Usman discussed Pereira’s most recent win and his future. ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ warned all those from light-heavyweight to heavyweight to be wary of a matchup against Pereira.

“Everybody in that middleweight, light heavyweight and heavyweight division are in trouble when they fight a guy like Alex Pereira,” Usman said.

“If you don’t take the path of least resistance and you let him actually fight in the way that he does have the biggest advantage, I think they’re all in trouble.”

Usman even stated he believed Pereira could find success against current interim heavyweight champion, Tom Aspinall.

“I definitely do give him a good chance against a guy like Tom Aspinall but don’t talk nothing away from Tom,”Usman said. “Tom is a savage as well and he’s a problem for anybody to deal with.”

Pereira will likely defend his light-heavyweight title next, potentially against former vacant title challenge Magomed Ankalaev. Pereira also likes to keep active, so if he is to make the jump, it will not be long.

Top 5 featherweight contender accepts a fight with ex-champion Aljamain Sterling: 'I like it'

If Aljamain Sterling can’t bag a fight with Brian Ortega, he can still score a scrap with the featherweight division’s No. 5 ranked contender.

The ‘Funk Master’ made his successful debut in the featherweight division at UFC 300, offering up what he believes was “the most dominant performance” of the landmark event against Calvin Kattar. The win thrust Sterling immediately into the division’s top 10, occupying the No. 8 spot.

Aljamain Sterling

Afterward, Sterling called for a fight with Ortega. However, if that doesn’t come to fruition, the former bantamweight champ thinks a showdown with undefeated Russian standout Movsar Evloev could be a “fun” one.

“I would rather the Ortega fight because I’m gunning for the belt, so if there’s a fight, and you’re giving me the option to pick, I’m going to pick the highest ranked guy,” Sterling said on The MMA Hour. “It’s not that the fight with Movsar wouldn’t be fun. I think two grapplers, the way we grapple, would have some very fun scrambles…I think when you have a style like mine and his, it could make for a fun fight, the same way Diego Lopes made it a fun fight” (h/t MMA Mania).

Responding to Sterling’s comment, Evloev commended the ex-champ’s bravery for seeking a fight against him — something few featherweight contenders are willing to do these days.

Evloev responds to Aljamain Sterling

“@funkmasterMMA brave for you to talk about me. I like it! Call UFC and fight me. I’m ready,” Evloev wrote on X.

Evloev is a picture-perfect 18-0 in his mixed martial arts career with eight of those victories coming under the UFC banner. His most notable W’s have come against Dan Ige, Diego Lopes, and most recently, Arnold Allen.
