Alan Jouban implores Dustin Poirier to retire following UFC 302 loss: 'I would tell him to walk away'

Alan Jouban thinks it’s time for Dustin Poirier to walk away.

After coming up short in his third and final bid to become lightweight world champion at UFC 302, Poirier suggested that his Fight of the Night with Islam Makhachev could very well be his last. However, ‘The Diamond’ left the door open, suggesting that a return to the Octagon could come down the line.

While a majority of MMA fans are holding out hope that Poirier fights again, Jouban would much rather see the Lafayette, Louisiana native lay down his gloves and ride off into the sunset as one of the most accomplished competitors in UFC history.

“I haven’t spoken to him since the fight. I would say walk away,” Jouban said on the latest episode of The Fighter vs. The Writer. “I would tell him to walk away. I think it’s been on his mind for a while. Since I’ve been talking to him for the last three years since I’ve been home [in Louisiana], he’s been bringing it up. ‘I don’t know how many more I left’ and then he gets a fight and then he knocks somebody out, ‘One more.’ He gets a loss ‘I can’t live with that loss.’ Gets a win, ‘We’ll see what happens.’

“Title fight comes, you can’t turn it down but he’s already got the money fight. People are chasing the belt, or they’re chasing Conor McGregor, and he’s done both.

“He’s said it a million times, ‘What is there left for me?’ He lost a fight that people probably gained even more — if it’s even possible — respect for him. It was such a competitive fight against the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world, who he handpicked Dustin because he thought it was a stylistic easier matchup. Dustin put him in deeper water than he’s ever been in his life against Islam. I think it’s a loss that you can hold your head high on. It’s one that’s easy to walk away from.”

There are still some interesting fights for Dustin Poirier

With 39 professional fights to his credit and a slew of noteworthy opponents, including Max Holloway, Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Eddie Alvarez, Anthony ‘Showtime’ Pettis, Michael Chandler, Conor McGregor, and the aforementioned Islam Makhachev, it’s clear that Poirier has nothing left to prove. Aside from undisputed gold, he’s done it all.

Dustin Poirier

Still, his popularity is at an all-time high and there is no doubt that the UFC could sell out arenas anywhere in the world with superfights featuring ‘The Diamond’ against the likes of former featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski or fellow three-time title challenger Colby Covington. And, of course, there’s always a trilogy fight with the Irish megastar.

Do you agree with Jouban? Is now the time for Poirier to walk away, or are you on the side of Daniel Cormier?

Dustin Poirier received a hero’s welcome upon his return to Lafayette, Louisiana.

Stepping into the main event spotlight at UFC 302 for his third and final shot at lightweight gold, Poirier came up short against reigning and defending world champion Islam Makhachev. Despite succumbing to a darce choke in the fifth round, ‘The Diamond’ offered an impressive showing and was dead even with the ‘Dagestani Destroyer’ on one judge’s scorecard going into the final five.

Days removed from the loss, Poirier returned to The Bayou State where fans and media were waiting to give him a proper greeting.

Daniel Cormier believes dustin poirier has plenty left in the tank

Dustin Poirier’s scrap with Makhachev may have been the final fight of his illustrious career. However, he did leave the door cracked open for a return. If Daniel Cormier gets his wish, ‘The Diamond’ will walk through it once again before laying down his gloves for good.

“If Dustin Poirier’s leaving this game, he leaves us with a ton of memories,” Cormier said on his YouTube channel following UFC 302. “I don’t want to see him go. I don’t know that he should go. I think that what Dustin Poirier should do is take the big fights. He’s such an attraction now in the world of fighting that he’s got a lot of money to be made, but also a lot of big fights to be had.

“He’s only 35 years old. He can do this for a long time. Maybe don’t fight as frequently, but continue to make that walk. Because once you’re done, you’re done and you can’t come back from it. Sometimes that sucks, especially for a guy that seemingly has a lot of years ahead of him.”

Recently, ex-featherweight titleholder Alexander Volkanovski showed interest in throwing hands with Poirier before 2024 comes to a close. There have also been rumors of a potential fight with fellow former three-time title challenger Colby Covington.

If ‘The Diamond’ sticks around, who would you like to see him go toe-to-toe with in what would be his 40th career fight?

Israel Adesanya figured Sean Strickland would beat Paulo Costa, so he wasn’t surprised to see him get the win at UFC 302.

Adesanya had fought both Strickland and Costa so he was familiar with both, and before the fight on his YouTube channel, he picked Strickland to win a decision.

After the result was read, Israel Adesanya gave his immediate reaction to it and said Paulo Costa sucks off the back foot so he wasn’t surprised that Sean Strickland was able to win a decision due to his pressure.

“Costa sucks off the back foot — he’s not really good off the back foot,” Israel Adesanya said on YouTube. “He’s doing better in this fight. Costa could set him up so bad here, man, because (Strickland is) so worried about that leg. It’s easier said than done, I’ll tell you that, but if you’ve worked on it, you know how to do it…”

“This is what I thought he would do,” Adesanya continued. “He’s walking him down. He’s possibly losing the rounds because he’s not really landing as much but he’s just like, ‘You know what? I’ll break him and eventually, I’ll just storm him.’ [Strickland] hammer fists your face, that’s how he throws his jab, he just throws a hammer fist.”

It was a good performance from Strickland to return to the win column after losing his middleweight title back in January to Dricus Du Plessis.

Israel Adesanya rips Paulo Costa after UFC 302

Following Sean Strickland getting the win at UFC 302, he called to fight for the belt next time out.

It’s expected that Israel Adesanya will face Dricus Du Plessis next and Strickland says he plans to wait out for a title shot.

“I’m going to wait,” Strickland said at the UFC 302 post-fight press conference. “I f*cking paid my f*cking dues. I paid my dues. I got f*cking robbed [at UFC 297] … we all know I got f*cking robbed, at least Dricus doesn’t back up. So I’m going to sit my f*cking ass in the gym and I’m going to be a team player and I’m going to f*cking wait, and I’m going to f*cking wait until they say, ‘Sean, go beat this man’…”

“As long as it takes,” Strickland said when asked how long he’s willing to wait to fight for the title. “I want the gold. When you’re fighting these top-10 motherf*ckers, you’re only one slip and dodge away from being knocked out. I paid my penance, I did what we did, I went and fought Costa. I didn’t want to, I did it. Give me the f*cking title shot. I beat Izzy and that motherf*cker gets a title shot.”

Sean Strickland is currently the No. 1 contender at middleweight and is 29-6 as a pro.
