Israel Adesanya confirms UFC 305 fight with Dricus Du Plessis after overnight leak

Israel Adesanya seemingly confirmed he will be fighting at UFC 305 in Australia.

After Alex Pereira was booked to fight Jiri Prochazka at UFC 303, which was rumored to headline UFC 305, it appears Adesanya will now take on Dricus Du Plessis for the middleweight title his next time out.

Taking to social media, Adesanya shared a fan-made poster with Adesanya vs. Du Plessis at UFC 305 in the bottom corner, with a unique quote.

Israel Adesanya

“The SUN of Africa is the same sun that lights up our planet. The SUN will set and will rise again until you walk into it. The SUN, enjoy while it shines. Darkness falls when it’s gone,” Adesanya wrote on X.

Although the UFC hasn’t confirmed Du Plessis vs. Adesanya, ‘The Last Stylebender’ seemingly confirmed all the rumors that this fight will happen in Australia. It is a fight that has been brewing for over a year and the two will now finally share the Octagon with one another.

Israel Adesanya

UFC 305 is set to take place on August 17 (August 18 in Australia), in Perth.

Israel Adesanya (24-3) hasn’t fought since September when he suffered a stunning decision loss to Sean Strickland to lose his middleweight title. Before that, he scored a KO win over Alex Pereira to reclaim his middleweight title. Adesanya is 1-2 in his last three fights but is looking to become a three-time middleweight champion.

Dricus Du Plessis (21-2) won the middleweight title back in January with a split decision win over Strickland. The South African is 7-0 in the UFC as he also holds notable wins over Robert Whittaker, Derek Brunson, Darren Till, and Brad Tavares among others.

September 10. 2023 was the last time the UFC held an event in Australia when Sean Strickland famously upset Israel Adesanya in the main event of the night. UFC 305 is set to fall sometime in August and currently only has two fights booked – Tom Noland vs. Alex Reyes and Casey O’Neill vs. Tereza Bleda.

The grudge match between Adesanya and Dricus Du Plessis has been rumoured to be the main event of the night for some time now but no official announcement has been made.

However, it does appear that Israel Adesanya at least will be confirmed for the card after a video posted by Dana White appeared to show the former middleweight champion, and others featured in the video.

“How excited am I to get back in the octagon? I’m excited,” Adesanya said via his YouTube channel. “I’m excited, it’s been a year — almost a year, like 11 months by the time I get back in the octagon. People are like, ‘Oh, I hope you get the belt back, I hope you get the belt back,’ I have belts. I don’t need any more belts. I’m coming for heads. That’s what I want to do.

“Just a few that I have to touch, and take.”

Last year the UFC signed a deal with multi-million dollar deal that would see them return to Australia on several occasions.

Undisputed middleweight champion, Dricus du Plessis is all ears to a future title defense against the unbeaten, Khamzat Chimaev should he win next weekend at UFC Fight Night Saudi Arabia – however, is less than keen on fighting ex-champion, Robert Whittaker again if he beats the Chechen this month.

du Plessis, the current undisputed middleweight kingpin, headlined UFC 297 back in January in Canada, landing the divisional crown in a controversial, and much debated split decision win over Sean Strickland.

“Should he (Khamzat Chimaev) beat (Robert) Whittaker, I would love to fight Khamzat,” Dricus du Plessis told Fight Wave. “In my opinion, should Whittaker beat Khamzat, I don’t think it warrants him a title shot. Honestly [I] would love to see him and (Sean) Strickland fight it out for [a] number one contender fight.”

“I was willing to fight Strickland, Khamzat, (Israel) Adesanya,” Dricus du Plessis continued. “I’m champion. I have to fight who they [the UFC] give me. I want to fight the best guy. Strickland fans were like, ‘Fight him again.’ I said, ‘Guys, I will fight him again.’ I don’t make that decision [when].”

Undisputed light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira has claimed former two-time middleweight kingpin, Israel Adesanya has “changed a little bit” since he knocked him out back in 2022 – explaining how this likely affected his performance against common-foe, Sean Strickland.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight champion and the current light heavyweight gold holder, has been sidelined since UFC 300 back in April, headlining the massive card in a title fight defense against Jamahal Hill.

And moving to 3-0 at the weight class since his climb last summer, Pereira dispatched the returning ex-champion with a blistering opening round knockout win in Las Vegas.

As for Adesanya, the City Kickboxing talent has been sidelined himself since last September, dropping a unanimous decision defeat to the above-mentioned common-opponent, Strickland at UFC 293 in Australia.

And linked with a return at UFC 305 in Perth – as has Pereira to boot, Adesanya is likely in line to take on current middleweight best, Dricus du Plessis in his return to action this summer.

Alex Pereira claims Israel Adesanya has changed since knockout loss

Sharing his thoughts on Adesanya since their pair of title fight showdowns inside the Octagon, Pereira claims the Nigerian-Kiwi striker has “changed” his approach to fighting, speculating that it may have come as a result of him knocking the former out.

“Being honest with you, like I said before, why the (Sean) Strickland fight for him (Israel Adesanya) would be a hard fight and looking how everything player out, how everything worked after I fought Adesanya, he changed a little bit,” Alex Pereira told Fox Sports Australia.

“It’s kind of like, I’m not going to say he’s not the same anymore but he’s been performing a little different, so I don’t even know what to expect,” Alex Pereira explained.

Taking on former divisional champion, Jamahal Hill in the event’s main event, Sao Paulo striker, Pereira laid waste to the returning Illinois native with a devastating opening round knockout, which has been a sore spot for the Dana White’s Contender Series product to date.

As for Adesanya, the former two-time middleweight gold holder has yet to feature since UFC 293 back in September, suffering a one-sided unanimous decision defeat to common-foe, Sean Strickland in an upset title fight loss.

Alex Pereira talks failed Israel Adesanya title trilogy

Holding three professional combat sports wins over Nigerian-Kiwi striker, Adesanya – including a fifth round knockout win at the middleweight limit at UFC 281, Pereira claims he has tired his best – ultimately to no avail, to strike a trilogy fight with the City Kickboxing staple a division higher.

Alex Pereira mocks Jamahal Hill after KO celebration jibe Maybe he just woke up from the knockout

Claiming Jamahal Hill “reaped what he had sown” as a result of his UFC 300 knockout loss two months ago, light heavyweight champion, Alex Pereira has questioned if the former had just “woke up” from the stoppage loss, after his complaints two months after the matchup.

Pereira, a former undisputed middleweight champion and the current light heavyweight titleholder, headlined UFC 300 most recently back in April, welcoming the above-mentioned Hill back from a ruptured achilles injury for the first time.

Taking out the Dana White’s Contender Series veteran with a blistering win, Pereira winged a huge left shovel hook, felling Hill and landing a slew of ground strikes to force a stoppage and defend his light heavyweight title successfully for the first time.

And months later, ahead of his own comeback at UFC 303 later this month against Carlos Ulberg, Illinois native, Hill claimed he would beat Pereira in a future rematch – after hitting out at him for his now-viral gesturing celebration.

Alex Pereira again takes aim at rival, Jamahal Hill

Doubling down on his recent response to Hill, Pereira joked that the former titleholder had likely just woken up for the first time since his knockout defeat – questioning why it took him two months to hit out at him.

“To be honest, I don’t get why he’s (Jamahal Hill) doing this so late,” Alex Pereira told Fox Sports Australia. “It’s been almost two months. People usually do that right away, but maybe he just woke up from the knockout.”

“It’s kind of like you harvest what you seed,” Alex Pereira explained. “During Glover’s (Teixeira) fight, he was respectful. Glover, he got respect at the end. With us, he was a bit more disrespectful – so he got what he put on.”
