Ciryl Gane set to fight Alexander Volkov in rematch at UFC 308 in Abu Dhabi

Former interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane return to the Octagon in October at UFC 308 according to reports overnight, taking on surging Russian striker, Alexander Volkov in a potential title-eliminator rematch in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Gane, who currently holds the number two rank in the heavyweight division, has been sidelined since he took headlining honors at UFC Fight Night Paris back in September of last year, landing a knockout win over Serghei Spivac.

Ciryl Gane set to book Alexander Volkov rematch for UFC 308

As for Volkov, the former Bellator MMA and M-1 Global heavyweight champion, is currently riding an impressive four-fight winning spree, most recently turning in an impressive unanimous decision win over compariot, Sergei Pavlovich at UFC Fight Night Saudi Arabia last month.

News of Ciryl Gane’s rematch clash with Alexander Volkov at UFC 308 was initially reported by Brazilian outlet, AgFight.

First sharing the Octagon back in 2021 in a main event showdown, Gane turned in a one-sided unanimous decision win over Volkov, before going on to defeat common-foe, Derrick Lewis in a another lopsided win, this time finishing the veteran heavyweight with a knockout win to clinch the interim divisional crown.

In between championship fight losses to both Francis Ngannou, and a dominant guillotine choke submission defeat to Jon Jones, Gane has racked up knockout finishes over both Tai Tuivasa, and the above-mentioned Spivac. 

38-10 as a professional, Moscow striker, Volkov has gone on a tear since his UFC Fight Night London submission loss to current interim champion, Tom Aspinall back in 2022, embarking on a lengthy winning spree.

Before his judging win over Pavlovich, Volkov had scored victories over Jairzinho Rozenstruik, Alexander Romanov, and the above-mentioned, Tuivasa – landing finishes over the trio.

UFC 308 takes place on October 26. from the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE – with an official main event fight yet to be booked by the organization at the time of publication.

Arman Tsarukyan confirms he will fight Islam Makhachev for title next the rest of you can take a seat

Amid speculation regarding his ability to make an October return to take on undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev at UFC 308, number one contender, Arman Tsarukyan has confirmed he will be taking on the Russian next – urging other challengers to lay in wait.

Tsarukyan, the current number one ranked lightweight contender, most recently featured at UFC 300 back in April, taking on former champion and common-foe, Charles Oliveira in an officially billed title eliminator.

And landing a victory over the Sao Paulo finisher, Tsarukyan secured the number one rank in the division – albeit in a controversial win.

However, prior to even entering the Octagon, Armenian contender, Tsarukyan was involved in a brawl with an attendee at UFC 300, resulting in a subsequent fine and retroactive suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

And facing a race against time to take on Makhachev in a title fight rematch at UFC 308 later this year in Abu Dhabi, UAE, Tsarukyan claims he will be next in line to take on the pound-for-pound kingpin.

“I’m the one fighting for the title next,” Arman Tsarukyan posted on his official X account. “The rest of you can take a seat. #AndNew”

Tsarukyan’s comments come on the back of recent calls from both Dustin Poirier for a title rematch with Makhachev himself – as well as the previously mentioned, Oliveira, whose own coach, Diego Lima confirmed he was in talks with UFC officials in a bid to draft his student in a title re-run before Tsarukyan.

“They [the UFC] really like Charles (Oliveira) – they want the best for Charles,” Diego Lima told said. “And I certainly made it clear that we wanted to return to the belt path. Both Charles and I want the belt. Now with Arman (Tsarukyan) suspended, there would be no name other than Charles Oliveira.”

“Charles is second in the ranking, and if you look at the rankings, there’s no one to fight with (Islam) Makhachev,” Lima explained. “(Dustin) Poirier just fought, (Justin) Gaethje also got knocked out. So the truth is that with Arman out of the game, I believe there is no one at 155 [pounds] to fight Makhachev other than Charles. So it’s certainly what we want, it’s what Charles wants.”

And with the above-mentioned, Tsarukyan facing a race against time to take on Makhachev in a planned rematch at UFC 308 in October after being hit with a suspension by the NSAC for his part in a pre-fight brawl with a fan, Oliveira – along with his coach, hope to draft in and fight the champion again.

Despite claiming he had received a shocking offer to return at UFC 308 in a title charge against undisputed lightweight champion, Islam Makhachev, veteran contender, Michael Chandler has already had that prospective clash shut down by the gold holder.

However, any aspirations the former Bellator MMA star perceived of landing a blockbuster fight for gold in October have already been shut down by Makhachev, who claimed the former would likely just return to a fight with McGregor if the Dubliner gets over his latest injury slump.

“You are unreliable dude, one tweet from your master, and you’ll run away,” Islam Makhachev replied to Michael Chandler. “Champ needs real opponent.”

Furthermore, overnight, Makhachev rejected the offer of an immediate rematch with former interim champion, Dustin Poirier – whom he recently submitted at UFC 302 back in May with a fifth round D’Arce choke win in New Jersey. 

Still linked with a UFC 308 comeback regardless, Makhachev has been touted to take on surging number one contender, Arman Tsarukyan in another rematch – who faces a race against time aimd his recent suspension dished out by the NSAC following his part in a pre-fight brawl with a member of the crowd at UFC 300.

And still planning a return to action in the promotion’s annual trip to Abu Dhabi for a UFC 308 pay-per-view card, footage has been shared of the Chechnya force training in the woods in anticipation of a comeback. 

Yet to return since October of last year, Chimaev would turn in his thirteenth straight win in a short-notice UFC 294 fight against former undisputed welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman, beating the Nigerian veteran in a controversial majority decision win.

Calling for a rescheduled pairing with Auckland-born striker, Whittaker in the future off the back of their cancelled UFC Saudi Arabia clash, Chimaev was told by the former directly how he had “dodged a bullet” by missing out on their pairing.

“I was pretty primed and ready,” Robert Whittaker said “I am 99 percent sure I would have starched Khamzat (Chimaev) as well. Our paths may cross one day in the division, as guys at the top of the game, but he dodged a bullet that night, that’s for sure.”

“… Like I said, I’m a middleweight, if he’s a middleweight – because I know he fights at welterweight sometimes as well – if we’re both at the top of the game, our paths may cross,” Robert Whittaker explained. “I didn’t duck you. I didn’t not sign the contract to fight you.”
