Brad Tavares will unfortunately be back on the sidelines for a while.

It was recently announced that Tavares would meet Antonio Carlos Junior in a middleweight encounter at UFC Brasilia on March 14.

However, just a few days out from the announcement, Tavares has pulled out of the fight after suffering a torn ACL injury as per Combate. The UFC nor Tavares are yet to make any comment regarding the injury. It is also not known as of yet whether Carlos Junior will get a replacement opponent or also be pulled from the card.

However, it serves as a big blow for Tavares with ACL injuries usually keeping athletes out from six to 12 months. The Hawaiian only recently returned after a long layoff when he broke his foot in a unanimous decision defeat to Israel Adesanya back in the summer of 2018.

Tavares had an unsuccessful return, however, as he was knocked out by Edmen Shahbazyan in the first round of their UFC 244 encounter in November.

With this latest setback, Tavares will need to wait a while before he can hope to avenge just the second two-fight losing streak of his career.

Hopefully, he has a speedy recovery.

Who do you want to see step in and replace Tavares?

Gilbert Burns could be set for a Brazilian jiu-jitsu showcase against Demian Maia at UFC Brasilia on March 14.

Burns recently tweeted that he had been offered a fight with a legend:

“A dream fight has being offered, against a legend! Hope he accepts and we can make it happen! ????” Burns tweeted last week.

It turns out that legend was Maia as Burns recently revealed he was offered a co-main event spot opposite Maia for the UFC’s return to Brasilia.

“Caught up with Gilbert Burns after his match with Craig Jones at #SUG10,” Drake Riggs reported. “He said he has been offered a co-main event spot against Demian Maia for #UFCBrasilia on March 14. Not official yet but that’s the direction things are heading in. Interview coming soon.”

Maia is on a three-fight winning streak with his most recent victim being Ben Askren when he submitted him at UFC Singapore back in October.

As for Burns, he is on a four-fight winning streak. He recently made the move up from lightweight to welterweight and has won both of his 170-pound matchups against Alexey Kunchenko and Gunnar Nelson on short notice.

UFC featherweight contender Renato Moicano has decided to test the waters at lightweight.

Moicano is coming off a first-round TKO defeat to Chan Sung Jung at UFC Greenville earlier in the summer. That setback marked the Brazilian’s second defeat in a row as well as his third in his last five outings.

Although he is used to cutting weight to reach the featherweight limit, Moicano was advised to make the move up following his loss to Jung. And he has decided to go along with it:

“Some coaches have been asking me to do this test at lightweight,” Moicano told MMA Fighting. “I was apprehensive at first, but Mike Brown has asked me many times since I moved to ATT. We’re used to cutting a lot of weight in Brazil, and that was never a problem for me, but I’ve suffered a lot in my last three fights.

“After my last loss, Mike Brown texted me saying ‘I think it’s time for you to move up. You have to at least make a test. If you don’t like it, fine, you can go back (to 145),’ and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Moicano’s ideal plans?

Facing veteran Clay Guida when the UFC returns to Brasilia on March 14. But even if it’s not Guida, Moicano wants the big-name opponents:

“I’m a huge fan of his [Guida] and since he has fought many times in Brazil before, I don’t think that would be a problem for him,” Moicano added. “He’s a veteran and a popular fighter, so that would be good to maybe make it the main or co-main event in Brasilia.

“He always puts on great fights. I’ve always looked out for big-name opponents since my debut and I plan on doing the same at 155: aim for big fights, good opponents.”

Do you think Moicano will find success at lightweight?

Paige VanZant’s return to the Octagon is set. VanZant will fight the final bout on her UFC deal at UFC Brasilia when she takes on Amanda Ribas on March 14.

MMA Fighting confirmed the matchup. Both fighters have verbally agreed to the fight, but no contracts have been signed as of this writing. In her last outing, VanZant defeated Rachael Ostovich via second-round submission by way of an armbar. However, she was then sidelined several months after being forced to undergo a pair of surgeries to repair a fractured arm.

As for Ribas, she comes off of a victory over Mackenzie Dern at UFC Tampa, handing the Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace the first loss of her professional mixed martial arts (MMA) career. There was initially some talk of VanZant fighting Maycee Barber next instead, as Barber has been calling VanZant out for quite some time.

However, VanZant refused to fight Barber due to her disrespectful tactics, and now, Barber is matched up against longtime women’s MMA veteran Roxanne Modafferi. It will be interesting to see how each woman does in their respective matchup, and if they find themselves matched up with one another down the line.

What do you think about the matchup between VanZant and Ribas in March?
