Jailton Almeida eyes future title fight with all time best Jon Jones before UFC retire

En route to championship contention ahead of his first headlining outing with the promotion this weekend, surging Brazilian contender, Jailton Almeida claims he hopes current heavyweight champion, Jon Jones prolongs his career – long enough to setup a championship showdown between the two.

Almeida, who boasts an impressive 18-2 professional record, looks to take a big step toward title contention in the heavyweight ranks this weekend, taking main event honors for the first time during his brief Octagon tenure, as he headlines UFC Fight Night Charlotte.

The prolific finisher – a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, will take on Suriname-born kickboxing talent, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, with the aim to take the latter’s #9 rank in the heavyweight division.

4-0 since his transition to the UFC just last year, Almeida debuted with a win over compatriot, Danilo Marques, before recording back-to-back stoppages over both Parker Porter, and Anton Turkajl, and then stopping veteran perennial contender, Shamil Abdurakhimov with strikes back in January on home soil at UFC 283 in his native Brazil.

Jailton Almeida speaks of his game plan for a future Jon Jones title fight

And heaping great praise on current heavyweight champion, Jon Jones ahead of his return at UFC on ABC 4 this weekend, Almeida spoke of his hope to finally fight the Endicott veteran before his retirement.

“I hope he (Jon Jones) stays,” Jailton Almeida told MMA Fighting. “I hope he beats (Stipe) Miocic and said, ‘I’ll do one more fight. Put me in against anyone.’ it would be very satisfying if they [the UFC] put me there. It’s like completing the game. Fighting and beating the all-time best.”

“This fight would be very difficult for me,” Jailton Almeida explained. “Jon Jones is a complete fighter, everybody knows that. He’s very versatile in everything he does. I’d let things go and focus on his weak spots to catch him. Study the fight early on and try to do my thing to finish the fight.”

Ahead of his Octagon return this weekend on the main card of UFC Fight Night Charlotte, Brazilian light heavyweight contender, Johnny Walker claims he’s “100 percent” ready for his first shot at divisional gold during his tenure with the UFC.

Walker, a product of Dana White’s Contender Series, is slated to return to the Octagon for the second time this year, co-headlining UFC on ABC 4 in a matchup against one-time title challenger and perennial contender, Anthony Smith.

Johnny Walker rides a two-fight winning run into his UFC return this weekend

Last time out on home soil in Rio de Janiero at UFC 283 in Brazil at the beginning of this year, Johnny Walker, the current #7 ranked division contender turned in his second consecutive victory with a first round elbow strikes stoppage of Paul Craig.

Back in September of last year at UFC 279, Walker turned in the first submission triumph of his Octagon run, stopping Ion Cutelaba with an opening round rear-naked choke.

And ahead of his high-profile co-headliner with Smith this weekend in North Carolina, Straight Blast Gym Ireland staple, Walker claimed he was “ready” to challenge for light heavyweight gold off the back of a sought-after win against Smith.

“One hundred percent, I’m ready, but I’m going to keep training every day, and I’m going to develop my skills,” Johnny Walker told assembled media at UFC Charlotte media day on Wednesday. “You can get better every time you train, every camp you train, but depending on the performance that I’m going to put on, it’s going to tell me and everybody else if I’m ready or not.”

Currently, the light heavyweight pack is led by fellow Dana White’s Contender Series product, Jamahal Hill, with the Illinois native capturing gold on the same card as Walker’s stoppage of Craig – landing the vacant light heavyweight crown with a unanimous decision win over the former’s compatriot, former champion, Glover Teixeira.

One-time light heavyweight title challenger, Anthony Smith may be preoccupied by a fight with another Brazilian this weekend at UFC on ABC 4 in the form of Johnny Walker, however, stressed his interest in welcoming former middleweight champion, Sao Paulo striker, Alex Pereira to the weight class in the future.

Smith, the current #5 ranked light heavyweight contender, is slated to co-headline the promotion’s return to Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend – taking on Rio de Janiero native, Walker over the course of three rounds.

Sidelined since a July main card clash with recent vacant title challenger, Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 277, Smith has since recovered from an ankle injury suffered in the clash, resulting in a ground strikes TKO blemish.

Prior to that defeat, the Nebraska veteran had embarked on a stunning three fight winning spree, laying waste to emerging talents, Devin Clark, Jimmy Crute, and Ryan Spann.

And as for Pereira, the former middleweight champion, who was touted to struggle at the light heavyweight limit by Smith ahead of his move, is poised to make his Octagon return from a brutal KO loss to Israel Adesanya back in April – in a light heavyweight move.

However, ahead of his UFC Charlotte return this weekend against Walker, Smith noted his interest in fighting the former’s compatriot, Pereira in the future – noting his admiration for the former two-weight GLORY Kickboxing kingpin.

“Yeah, I would love that fight [with Alex Pereira],” Anthony Smith told assembled media during his availability ahead of UFC Charlotte. “I’m a big fan of Alex, I’m a big kickboxing fan. So I knew who Alex Pereira was before he even came to the MMA side. So I was excited when I seen him get booked at LFA, I believe. I didn’t suspect he would be on the regional scene very long, just because the type of athlete that he is.”

“I think the same problems he would have – outside of Israel Adesanya he would have at 185 [pounds], he would have at 205 [pounds],” Anthony Smith explained. “You know, I’m a huge Israel Adesanya fan, I don’t ever wanna take away anything from that guy, but if Izzy is blast doubling you, and controlling you on the ground. You know, a guy like (Aleksandar) Rakic, (Magomed) Ankalaev, (Jan) Blachowicz, or myself, are gonna give you the same problems.”

Ahead of his incoming clash against former title challenger, Anthony Smith at UFC Fight Night Charlotte next month, light heavyweight contender, Johnny Walker has offered to welcome former undisputed middleweight champion, Alex Pereira to the 205lbs ranks, boasting his own knockout ability.

Walker, the current #7 ranked light heavyweight contender, enters his UFC on ABC 4 clash against Smith in the midst of a two-fight winning run, most recently landing a first round knockout win over Paul Craig at UFC 283 in his native Brazil back in January of this year.

As for Pereira, the Sao Paulo knockout artist headlined UFC 287 last weekend in a middleweight title defense against former champion, Israel Adesanya, dropping a second round KO loss to the City Kickboxing staple.

Alex Pereira set for a light heavyweight division climb

In turn, the Brazilian confirmed he would moving to the light heavyweight limit of 205lbs for his next walk to the Octagon, having dropped undisputed middleweight spoils.

“Hi, folks, like I promised, I’ll announce you big news on my channel,” Alex Pereira said on his YouTube channel. “My next fight will be in 205[lbs] [division]. Yeah, you heard right – my next fight will be in 205[lbs]. I think I did my work in 185 and now I’m feelin’ good to go up to 205. Like I told you, when I’m feeling good, I will go up – this will be something natural. And now I think it is.”

“… All of you saw the provocation from (Israel) Adesanya after the fight – he acts as if he has won against me three times,” Alex Pereira explained. “But it’s not like this. But I understand – or try to understand, the happiness he has. It was his dream to win one time against me. And now he did. But let’s see what will be his behavior. I’m going to light heavyweight because it’s a good option for me. But I’m sure if I stay in this division (middleweight), I can fight against him directly. Let’s see, how he behaves.”

Receiving a potential welcoming to the division by current champion and would-be common-foe, Jamahal Hill, Pereira has also been offered a path to a light heavyweight debut by compatriot, Walker.

“Let’s come,” Johnny Walker told MiddleEasy during an interview. “Everyone is going to have to welcome him [Alex Pereira]. Whatever it takes. I’m happy to [fight him]. That is what I do for a living. I don’t ;ick fights. Whatever [the[ UFC books for me I accept and I’ll be happy. I make the top-10, go there, mission accomplished.”
