Darren Till and Robert Whittaker put a striking clinic on one another last weekend at UFC Fight Island III. It was everything we hoped and expected it would be, a very technical battle throughout with each party having their moments. Till issued the following statement about his fight with ‘The Reaper’ on Instagram earlier today:

“What a week! Just reflecting on my chess match of a fight with rob? Enjoyed the competition, Few things I hesitated on & should of capitalized. It was a close close match as everyone said, You could of gave it 3-2 me, 3-2 rob? Either way is completely right I feel! The 5th round the takedowns maybe didn’t count because I sprung back up each time therefore nullifying them…

But I ain’t crying over spilled milk. Rob’s a terrific fighter & hats off to him, We will get it done again. As for me! I’ve got some time off from a certain knee from a certain someone… rob? ? I told you all before this fight that I’m just getting started and I meant it… I’m going to become the world champion I’m going to become a legend & I’m going to become a role model for young aspiring fighters everywhere.

As soon as I’m back this year I want to fight 2-3 times as quick as I can… Thanks for the support, thanks for the hate. Thanks for everything!! ADELASAGNE!!! I’ll see you soon boi ? Thank you my team, my family & my friends for the support, Especially @teamkaobon & @mtkglobal

The Gorilla…”

It’s unfortunate to see someone with the potential and talent of Till start out his career with a 17-0-1 record, then go 1-3 in his next four, but we can see he’s consistently getting better with each fight he has. Not to mention, he lost to three of the best fighters in the entire world, and he’s still only 27-years-old.

What would you like to see happen next for Darren Till? He’ll be out of the mix until at least mid-September, considering he has to wear a cast for the next six weeks. TalkMMA has linked him to a bout with Anderson Silva, and says we should expect an announcement in the next several days. Jack Hermansson is also ranked directly below him in the No. 6 spot, and coming off an incredible heel hook finish over Kelvin Gastelum, who just so happens to be Till’s last victory as well.

The UFC’s final Fight Island event was a ratings success.

UFC Fight Island 3 took place this past Saturday and was headlined by a middleweight bout between former champion Robert Whittaker and Darren Till which the former ended up winning via unanimous decision after a back-and-forth battle.

And as per MMA Fighting, the event as a whole averaged 908,000 viewers and peaked at 1.2 million viewers. In addition, it received a .35 rating in the 18-49 demographic which allowed it to land the No. 1 spot on the cable ratings on Saturday night.

Overall, it was the ninth-best performing UFC card on ESPN with the top-rated event still being the first ESPN event in February 2019 that featured Francis Ngannou vs. Cain Velasquez that average 1.463 million viewers

Bellator Struggles While UFC Succeeds

On the other hand, Bellator struggled.

The Santa Monica-based promotion returned this past Friday with Bellator 242 which was headlined by a bantamweight bout between Sergio Pettis and Ricky Bandejas.

However, it only averaged 277,000 viewers on the Paramount Network as it ended the night at No. 74 overall in the cable ratings. In addition, it was also the lowest-viewed Bellator card on the Paramount Network this year.

Sobotta

Peter Sobotta has called time on his career.

The German welterweight announced his retirement on social media following his unanimous decision defeat to Alex Oliveira on the UFC Fight Island 3 main card last night.

Sobotta was outclassed on the feet and also broke his right arm early on in the fight which likely stemmed from blocking Oliveira’s body kicks. And after acknowledging that he didn’t have what it took to fight at the top any longer, the 33-year-old decided it was time to walk away.

Here is what he had to say (via Google Translate):

“Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to win tonight. I’m also not particularly well. I broke my right arm early in the fight, my face had to be sewn in four places. I’m not looking for excuses. I was the worse fighter tonight. Not ready to grit your teeth and go forward. Too little pressure, too little courage, too few hits. I could not play my greatest strength because several takedown attempts failed. Oliveira deservedly won.

“I have to recognize that my path as an active MMA fighter ends after 17 years. I felt that in the ring today. I really love this sport with all my heart and this decision hurts more than any broken bones and ligaments. But I just don’t have the toughness, robustness and willingness to take risks to fight at the top. It was a damn wild ride and I am infinitely grateful for the emotions and experiences that I was able to experience. Thanks to EVERYONE who accompanied and supported me ??????

Sobotta retires with a 17-7-1 record.

His last win came in May 2017 when he finished Ben Saunders via TKO. He would go on to lose to Leon Edwards in 2018 before suffering his most recent setback against Oliveira.

Khamzat Chimaev is not done just yet.

Chimaev fought for the second time in 10 days when he completely dominated Rhys McKee en route to a first-round TKO win in their welterweight bout on the main card of UFC Fight Island 3 on Saturday night.

Much like his dominant debut against John Phillips at UFC Fight Island 1, the damage was lopsided in favor of Chimaev who didn’t absorb a single strike against McKee.

And now, he wants to fight again at UFC 252 — with UFC president Dana White being receptive to the idea.

“Just spoke to @danawhite and he said @KChimaev “is special” and wants to fight again on Aug. 15 at #UFC252. He said he’ll make that happen.”

That means if confirmed, Chimaev will have fought three times in the span of a month.

If he makes it three wins out of three, it would certainly be one of the most memorable debut months in UFC history — if it isn’t already.

UFC 252 takes place August 15 in Las Vegas and will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between current champion Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.

Adesanya Darren Till

Darren Till may have lost on Saturday night, but he certainly impressed middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

Till met Robert Whittaker in the UFC Fight Island 3 headliner as they took part in a back-and-forth fight that certainly delivered. In the end, “The Reaper” did just about enough to edge the bout and earn the unanimous decision win.

However, Till’s stock certainly wasn’t affected.

It may have even increased in defeat as that certainly seemed to be the case going by Adesanya’s tweet post-fight where he expressed his desire to still fight “The Gorilla” one day.

“I still wanna fight Till one day. His striking is beautiful. Stay up Darren! ?

Adesanya vs. Till is a fight that many in the mixed martial arts world have been waiting to see, not only because of their striking styles, but also because of their personalities and friendship.

If both fighters keep winning, it could still very much be a possibility.
