UFC Fight Island 5 all but confirmed that Petr Yan’s next fight would be against Aljamain Sterling.

Cory Sandhagen earned the victory in the bantamweight headliner following an impressive second-round TKO win over Marlon Moraes last night.

Leading up to the event, Moraes was hopeful that a definitive win would see him leapfrog Sterling to get the next crack at the title. However, with his defeat, Sterling is now guaranteed to get the next shot barring some crazy circumstances.

He would call out Yan once again soon following the event.

“Hey @danawhite , I’m waiting for your chicken in December. Give me your chicken or coming for dat ?! #PAUSE! @PetrYanUFC #PaprChamp”

That incited a heated response from Yan.

“I’m waiting for you dickhead. You will be held accountable for every word you said”

Sterling would eventually respond to Yan by claiming he would take his title.

“Aww don’t worry. I’ll take that belt from you so that you don’t have a target on your back. It’ll be ok.”

One thing is for sure. Things will remain this heated once a bantamweight title fight between Yan and Sterling is eventually booked and made official.

Do you think this fight will finally be made? And who do you think takes it?

Marlon Moraes felt the stoppage in his second-round TKO defeat to Cory Sandhagen was a little premature.

Sandhagen returned to the win column with an impressive spinning wheel kick that dropped Moraes in the UFC Fight Island 5 headliner last night. The referee stopped the bout soon after as Sandhagen pounced to land ground and pound on the Brazilian.

While many had no problems with the stoppage, some observers felt the fight could have gone a bit longer and Moraes certainly agrees.

“I thought we had a very good first round. But I thought I won the round,” Moraes said during the post-fight show on ESPN+ (via Sherdog). “And then he started the second and I don’t know, I think he kind of catch me with a kick and bloodied my eye a little bit and right after he surprised me. He didn’t come this way, he came the other way and that’s it.

“Probably a little early stoppage but whatever. I thought I was [OK to continue] but the ref just jumped on me. I didn’t have time enough to get up.”

Regardless of how he felt about the stoppage, Moraes made no excuses about the defeat and believes it just wasn’t his day as he was simply caught.

“I just got caught,” Moraes added. “He catch me. I was doing good the first round, it was a good fight. I was very excited for this fight. I knew we were going to do the ‘Fight of the Night’ for sure.

“But unfortunately, I got caught. I caught a lot of guys before but that was my day.”

There are only two fighters who make sense to be Cory Sandhagen’s next opponent.

Sandhagen returned to the win column with an emphatic second-round TKO win over Marlon Moraes in the UFC Fight Island 5 headliner on Saturday night.

It put Sandhagen right back into the title mix as he bounced back from what he labeled to be an “embarrassing” first-round submission loss to Aljamain Sterling in June. That victory for Sterling all but assured him of the next shot at the bantamweight title and although it’s yet to be official, it’s highly-expected that the next championship fight will see him face current champion Petr Yan.

If that is the case, Sandhagen only envisions two fighters for him to face next.

“The only other guys who have an argument is TJ when he gets back in January and Frankie [Edgar],” Sandhagen said in his post-fight interview with Dan Hardy. “All the respect to both of those guys but I want that belt. Those are the only two guys ahead of me and then I want the winner of Yan vs. Sterling.”

Dillashaw, of course, is serving a two-year ban from USADA after testing positive for EPO in 2019. He will be eligible to compete in January and a fight with Sandhagen would certainly be an intriguing affair.

Edgar, meanwhile, recently enjoyed a successful bantamweight debut after outpointing Pedro Munhoz in their August headliner.

For now, we’ll have to wait and see what the UFC’s plans are.

#4 ranked contender, Cory Sandhagen entered tonight’s headliner opposite one-time title challenger, Marlon Moraes as the betting favourite – and he’s most definitely upset the bantamweight apple cart with a stunning wheel-kick knockout over the Brazilian in the second round.

Sandhagen, ever the one to vary his strikes – landed to the legs, body, and head on cue throughout the opening round to grab Moraes’ attention. Dropping a later takedown after scoring a punishing body kick – Sandhagen may have just about found himself on the wrong end of the opening scorecard.

After finding a home for a high kick early in the second-frame – Sandhagen informed his corner that Moraes has broken his orbital bone, before launching a stunning wheel kick – catching the Brazilian on the top of his head. Following up with ground-and-pound, Sandhagen forced referee Marc Goddard to step in and call a halt to the action – securing the biggest win of his career to date.

With eyes firmly planted on the winner of the long rumoured bantamweight title clash of champion, Petr Yan and former opponent, Aljamain Sterling – Sandhagen noted the title aspirations of former division best, T.J. Dillashaw who returns from suspension in January, as well as former lightweight champion, Frankie Edgar – aspirations he holds himself.

Below, catch the highlights from Sandhagen’s shocking knockout of Moraes.
