Rob Font was asked to step into an interim title fight in October.

When Aljamain Sterling pulled out of his bantamweight title rematch with Petr Yan and Cory Sandhagen stepped in, many analysts, media members, and fans wondered why No. 4 ranked Font wasn’t the one that the UFC went to.

Well, we have the answer. The UFC did go to Font; however, a fight with COVID prevented him from adequately being able to train for the biggest fight of his career.

On Thursday, the top bantamweight contender spoke with journalist James Lynch and confirmed that the UFC matchmakers asked him.

“Yeah, man. I was, unfortunately. Obviously, we got the call, but I had just got off the whole COVID situation and wasn’t training. So, uh, I couldn’t jump into that fight. I was pissed, but you know, things happen for a reason,” Font told Lynch.

The No. 4 ranked fighter revealed that he got COVID in Texas.

“I shouldn’t have gone to Texas,” Font laughed. Font said he got COVID about a month ago and was out of action for about three weeks. He was had just been able to leave the house, and that is when he got the call.

Font tried to move the fight up a couple of weeks, but the UFC needed the fight to be in Abu Dhabi on ‘Fight Island,’ and he realized it wouldn’t be a smart move on his part, so he passed.

Font was happy that the UFC came to him with the fight and did not snub him. He revealed that they had two names, Sandhagen and himself.

“They pretty much said, ‘hey, we want to see if you want to do it, but we’re also offering it to Sandhagen as well.’ It was unfortunate that we had to turn it down, but it was pretty cool we had to turn it down,” Font said. “It kinda sucked because we weren’t sure if it was for the real title or the interim title. Once we found out it was for the interim, it wasn’t the worst, you know? I would have been doing it just to do it, and it wouldn’t have been my best performance.”

Luckily, he got another fight. He fights former featherweight champion Jose Aldo on December 4 in the main event in what could be a title eliminator.

“The Jose Aldo situation came along, and I was like perfect, this works out even better,” Font said.

Are you shocked Font turned the title fight down? Or was it the right decision?

Justin Gaethje Believes Title Shot Awaits With UFC 268 Victory Over Michael Chandler

Justin Gaethje

Former interim UFC lightweight champion, Justin Gaethje has claimed that should he defeat fellow contender, Michael Chandler at UC 268 next month, he will then challenge for undisputed lightweight gold in the form of a tilt against Charles Oliveira, or a rematch with Dustin Poirier.

Gaethje, who currently holds the #2 rank in the official lightweight pile, headlined UFC 254 in October of last year in his most recent Octagon walk — dropping an eventual second round triangle submission loss to then-champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov in a title unification loss.

The November 6. outing against most recent title chaser, Chandler at Madison Square Garden will mark Gaethje’s first outing in over 13 months, however, he believes he, and not the former Bellator lightweight best should have faced Oliveira for vacant gold in May at UFC 262.

Headlining the May event at the Toyota Center against Oliveira, Chandler ultimately dropped an early second round knockout loss to the Sao Paulo native, having started brightly in the opening round.

Chandler’s inclusion in a vacant title bout despite featuring just once in the Octagon drew notable displeasure from the likes of former interim gold holders, Poirier and Tony Ferguson, with the latter coining the phrase, “Dana White privilege” to describe Chandler’s quickfire title shot.

With Oliveira slated to attempt his first defense of the lightweight title at the promotion’s final flagship event of the year at UFC 269 in headlining bout against Poirier, Gaethje believes he’ll follow suit into a title shot with a win over Chandler next month.

Absolutely, I go out there and get the W on November 6. and I will be fighting for the title next,” Justin Gaethje told The Schmo. “I’ll be fighting the winner of (Dustin) Poirier and (Charles) Oliveira, that’s definitely the plan.

#1 fought #5, #3 fought #4, and if you were #2, you got f*cked,” Justin Gaethje explained. “It just so happened that my name was next to that #2 spot, so it is what it is. The opportunity is ahead of me to get what I want, so I gotta capitalize.

Prior to October’s submission defeat to the now-retired, Khabib, Gaethje has embarked on an eye-catching winning streak of four consecutive knockouts — stopping the quartet of James Vick, Edson Barboza, Donald Cerrone, and the above mentioned, Ferguson — the last of which earned him the interim lightweight crown in a short notice UFC 249 main event back in May of last year.

Gaethje has previously voiced his interest in a future title re-run with Poirier, as well as claiming he would like to share the Octagon with Oliveira — calling the promotion’s most prolific submission artist, a “quitter“.

Zhang Weili Believes Rose Namajunas ‘Crossed The Line’ With Communism Comments

Zhang Weili has been reflecting on the build-up to her first fight with Rose Namajunas ahead of the strawweight duo’s eagerly-anticipated rematch on November 5 at UFC 268.

In the lead-up, to UFC 261 Lithuanian-American Namajunas used the anti-communist phrase “better dead than red” when discussing Zhang who hails from China.

During a recent appearance on The MMA Hour, Zhang admitted that Namajunas’ anti-communist rhetoric had a profound impact on her and the crowd in attendance at UFC 261 back in April.

“I think it definitely affected me a little bit,” Zhang told Ariel Helwani. “The comments that Rose made, I think she was successful in making the audience boo me. But I think that’s my own problem because I should be concentrating on the fight and not the audience. I can’t control who the audience likes. So I’m becoming more focused on my own fight.”

“In my mind, I think that, yes, those comments crossed the line because I think all the audience, all the fighters, we all come together in the UFC because we all share the passion of the MMA sport,” Zhang continued. “In my mind, I’m coming here because I want to make friends because we all have the common love of martial arts. I think it’s not a good thing to mix sport with politics, but I think that’s maybe her plan. So in the beginning, I thought it was just kind of trash talk. It really didn’t affect me. But when I went out in the stadium and got booed, I think Rose wanted to use those comments to make the audience boo me.”

Zhang insists she will not be fazed by the crowd at UFC 268 next month.

“I have been to New York City once, but I’ve never been to Madison Square Garden,” Weili said. “I’m very much looking forward to the fight, and I’m also expecting there will be some Chinese audience that will want to go to cheer me. But I also adjusted my mentality. Even if the audience boos me, I will just think they like me.” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Do you agree with Zhang Weili? Did Rose Namajunas cross the line with her anti-communist comments?

Former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos is slated to bring his talents to professional wrestling following his release from the Dana White-led promotion back in March — debuting under the AEW (All-Elite Wrestling) banner on the weekend of October 15. and 16. — in an event in Miami, Florida.

dos Santos, a former undisputed heavyweight champion under the UFC’s banner, was, along with past-foe and decorated Dutch kickboxing icon, Alistair Overeem, handed their walking papers from the promotion in March of this year.

The Brazilian last competed professionally against current interim heavyweight champion, Ciryl Gane in December of last year, dropping a second round knockout loss. The defeat came as the veteran’s fourth consecutively, following a trio of previous knockout defeats to current heavyweight titleholder, Francis Ngannou, Jairzinho Rozenstruik, and Curtis Blaydes.

According to a report from ESPN MMA reporter, Marc Raimondi, dos Santos is scheduled to feature in a six-man tag team professional wrestling match next weekend, with fellow American Top Team trainee, former two-time UFC welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal slated to be in the Brazilian’s corner.

Speaking with the outlet this week, dos Santos expressed his excitement at making the transition to professional wrestling.

I love it,” Junior dos Santos said. “It’s very different from MMA, but just as exciting. The reactions from the fans are amazing. I’m having a lot of fun and look forward to kicking (Chris) Jericho and (Jake) Hager’s asses next week.

A former undisputed heavyweight champion, the Santa Carina knockout-artist is best remembered for his trilogy of fights with fellow former heavyweight champion turned professional wrestler, Cain Velasquez — and holds victories over four former heavyweight gold holders; Frank Mir, Stipe Miocic, Fabricio Werdum, and Shane Carwin.

Mackenzie Dern Floats Future Matchup With Valentina Shevchenko: ‘Maybe A Jiu-Jitsu Girl Beats Her’

Mackenzie DernAhead of her UFC Vegas 39 headliner this weekend, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Mackenzie Dern has not ruled out a leap to the flyweight ranks in the future from her current strawweight home, even suggesting it may take a seasoned grappler to stop the dominant reign of current flyweight queen, Valentina Shevchenko.  Arizona-born grappling maestro, Dern […]

Mackenzie Dern

Ahead of her UFC Vegas 39 headliner this weekend, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Mackenzie Dern has not ruled out a leap to the flyweight ranks in the future from her current strawweight home, even suggesting it may take a seasoned grappler to stop the dominant reign of current flyweight queen, Valentina Shevchenko

Arizona-born grappling maestro, Dern has won her last four on the bounce. And makes her headlining bow under the promotion’s banner this weekend at the UFC Apex facility — taking on Rio Grande do Sul-born Muay Thai talent, Marina Rodriguez in pivotal, potential strawweight title-eliminator

11-1 as a professional, Dern’s sole professional blemish came in the form of a unanimous decision to fellow strawweight talent, Amanda Ribas — lodged an impressive six UFC victories since her organizational bow back in March 2018.

Dern, who plys her trade alongside the renowned Jason Parillo at California-based facility, RVCA, managed a statement win over the returning Nina Nunes back in April at UFC on ABC 2 — submitting the American Top Team staple with a late opening round armbar win, becoming the most prolific strawweight grappler in the history of the promotion with four submission stoppages.

Currently clutching the #4 rank at strawweight, Dern, a nine-time Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world champion across her decorated grappling career, suggested a grappling force, as proficient as herself may prove to be the kryptonite of flyweight pack leader, Shevchenko.

I’m working with Rogerio Camoes — he’s making me stronger, just feeling good,” Mackenzie Dern told assembled media at the UFC Vegas 39 media day. “I fought at 125(lbs) before, but it was not a very strong Mackenzie. I was like of like a little bit lazy Mackenzie, like not so professional.

Definitely just watching Valentina (Shevchenko), you know, she’s a long time at the belt,” Mackenzie Dern continued. “The girls are trying, we’re trying, but I’m like, we need someone to fight her. Maybe a Jiu-Jitsu girl is the one to beat her. Who knows, you know? But definitely. I can see myself getting to 125(lbs), but as a fit Mackenzie, you know? That idea is getting more and more attractive to me, to go in and try and just make history.” (H/T MMA Junkie)

As for Shevchenko, the Kyrgyzstan native turned in a record-setting fifth successful title defense at UFC 266 earlier this month — eventually stopping challenger, Lauren Murphy with fourth round ground strikes. Shevchenko has since been linked with a trilogy bout against current two-weight champion, Amanda Nunes

Aspen Ladd To Replace Holly Holm, Fight Norma Dumont On October 16

Aspen Ladd

Aspen Ladd will replace the injured Holly Holm who was expected to main event alongside Norma Dumont at UFC Vegas 40 on October 16.

On Wednesday, Ariel Helwani reported that the former bantamweight champion had been forced out of the bout due to a knee injury.

“Per sources, Holly Holm is out of the headliner fight versus Norma Dumont due to a knee injury,” Helwani wrote on SubStack. “It’s unclear at this time what the UFC will do with the main event now. Holm, according to sources, is hoping to return to action by the end of 2021.”

Soon after, ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto announced on social media that Ladd would be stepping in to replace Holm, he wrote.

“Per sources, UFC working to finalize a new main event with Aspen Ladd (@TheAspenLadd), following Holly Holm’s withdrawal against Norma Dumont due to injury.”

Ladd hasn’t fought since picking up a third-round TKO win over Yana Kunitskaya back in December 2019 due to injury. With her injury troubles behind her, Ladd was scheduled to face Macy Chiasson at UFC Vegas 38 but that fight was canceled after she struggled to weigh in at the bantamweight limit (136lbs). Ladd was visibly shaking when she stood on the scale and appeared to be on the verge of passing out during her failed attempts to hit the mark.

After the fight was scrapped from UFC Vegas 38, Ladd took to social media to explain that her weight cut issues were more complex than people might think.

Fight is off. Again. All my fault,” Ladd wrote. “Straight up started my period 2 days back and made this cut absolutely miserable. Did the best I could, hit 137, the scale situation was a mess because the last thing I wanted was to bleed in front of the media. The fight wasn’t pulled, my opponent then decided she would rather not go through with it, as is her right. I’m going to get slammed regardless, so let it begin.”

The fight against Dumont will take place at featherweight so hopefully, that means Ladd will be able to safely make weight and the UFC Vegas 40 main event will go ahead as planned.

Do you think Aspen Ladd can make good on her first UFC main event slot?
