Justin Gaethje

Justin Gaethje has been relatively dormant since losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 254, but his manager Ali Abdelaziz thinks that he should be next in line for the UFC lightweight title shot against Charles Oliveira, and not the recently victorious Dustin Poirier.

Gaethje has been reportedly waiting for the right opponent since falling to Khabib by submission in the second round last October and has been rumored to be the UFC’s target for a fight with Michael Chandler later this year. Negotiations are still relatively tranquil and no official announcements have been made for Gaethje’s 2021 debut.

In a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Abdelaziz singled out his client, Gaethje when discussing who should be Oliveira’s first title defense as champion.

“I believe [Justin Gaethje] should be fighting [Charles Oliveira] next,” Abdelaziz said. “That’s what I believe. Dustin maybe needs to take a break, let these two guys handle (business). I know the UFC wants to make Chandler. On paper, it’s a great fight, but Mike Chandler doesn’t deserve anything. He needs to be quiet, sit down, and if Justin decides to fight him, he’ll let him know. But Mike Chandler doesn’t deserve anything.”

Chandler will make his broadcasting debut this weekend at UFC Vegas 31, while Poirier is fresh off his trilogy win over Conor McGregor at UFC 264. UFC president Dana White has tentatively said that Poirier and Oliveira will fight for the lightweight title later this year.

Gaethje fell to Poirier back in 2018 as “The Diamond” began to make his run through the UFC’s lightweight division. After that, he won four straight fights en route to the title shot which included an interim title win over Tony Ferguson at UFC 249.

The UFC lightweight title picture is perplexing, to say the least. Poirier will more than likely get the next shot, but you could definitely make the case for Gaethje given his fan-friendly style and popularity among the MMA community.

As promised, Dustin Poirier has received the infamous ‘Sleepy McGregor’ chain from YouTuber and Boxer Jake Paul, in his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana.

But Poirier doesn’t plan on keeping the chain, and plans on auctioning it to one lucky fan and use the proceeds to help support his foundation “The Good Fight” to help those in his area make it through economic struggles and various other challenges.

The chain has an estimated value of over $100,000 with white gold and diamonds on it, and it’s sure to auction off for a lot of money assuming Poirier follows through. His foundation provides a platform for fans and athletes to fight and help underserved communities around the world and those who are in need of a wide variety of assistance.

Poirier recently paired up with boxer Manny Pacquiao to create housing initiatives in Uganda, along with former UFC fighter Justin Wren. Poirier also had a young man from Lafayette attend UFC 264 in Las Vegas will all expenses paid by “The Diamond” himself.

Poirier posted on his Instagram to announce his intentions for the chain and his foundation.

“Got the sleepy mac chain today from [Jake Paul],” Poirier said. “I will be auctioning it off soon for [The Good Fight Foundation] to do something big for Lafayette!!”

Poirier’s stock in and out of the octagon has risen quickly ever since he made the move to lightweight from featherweight in the UFC back in 2015. He immediately put a string of wins together including victories over former titleholder Eddie Alvarez, as well as former interim champion Justin Gaethje.

After his doctor’s stoppage win over Conor McGregor, UFC president has confirmed that Poirier will be lightweight champion Charles Oliveira’s first title defense later this year. This will be Poirier’s second shot at the lightweight title after falling to Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 242.

Mark Coleman Defends UFC Fighter Pay: ‘Everybody’s Getting Paid Pretty Damn Good’

Mark Coleman thinks UFC fighters are earning “pretty good” money right now.

The MMA legend has come out to defend Dana White and the UFC amid claims they are underpaying fighters.

According to a 2020 report from The New York Post, the UFC is only paying its fighters 16 percent of its total revenue, as of 2019. The report reads that fighters only cost the UFC less than $150 million. That is 16 percent of the company’s total $900 million in revenue. Other sports leagues such as Major League Baseball (MLB) or the National Football League (NFL) pay their fighters around 48 to 50 percent.

Since this report was released fighter pay has been a hot topic in MMA circles and continues to be so today. Most recently, YouTube star turned boxer, Jake Paul, has been rallying against White and the UFC for their mistreatment of athletes.

In an interview with Betway, Coleman spoke of his respect for his former boss despite having issues with him in the past.

I respect Dana a lot,” Coleman said. “He’s called me as dumbass plenty of times, but who hasn’t he called a dumbass? So, I don’t take it too personally. I think he’s done one hell of a job, and we’ve got to give him a lot of credit for where the sport is at today.

‘The Hammer’ understands the want to see fighters earn more and believes that day will come but for now he says they are doing “pretty damn good”.

“Of course, everybody wants to be paid more,” Coleman said. “I think they’re probably going to have to pay more eventually, but right now everybody’s getting paid pretty damn good, I tell you that.

“Compared to what we got back when I was fighting. They’re getting paid pretty good.”

Do you agree with Mark Coleman? Does the modern UFC fighter earn “pretty damn good” money?
