Michael Chandler wants in on the Conor McGregor belt.

Chandler battles Charles Oliveira for the vacant lightweight title in the UFC 262 headliner taking place May 15 in Houston, Texas. McGregor, meanwhile, will meet Dustin Poirier in a trilogy fight in the UFC 264 headliner taking place July 10 in Las Vegas.

The Irishman also notably suggested the introduction of a McGregor belt recently and Chandler is all for the idea as he wants it on the line should they meet later this year. Along with the lightweight title he plans on winning against Oliviera.

“I love it, man,” Chandler told Helen Yee (via BJ Penn). “It’s Conor being Conor. Listen, I mean you can say what you want about Conor, but the dude’s the biggest combat sports icon on the planet. Not just right now, but he has been for a while and he will be for the foreseeable future.

“I don’t think (the McGregor belt) is going to happen. I think it’s kind of a cool idea. I love the prospect of him beating Dustin Poirier and me putting my belt on the line in November or December, and him putting the Conor McGregor belt on the line in November or December. I’d love a patek rare belt sitting on my collection. I want to share the Octagon with Conor McGregor sooner or later eventually before I retire, so we’ll see if it happens after I beat Charles Oliveira. How many fights it will take, we’ll see.”

It’s definitely likely that the winner of those two fights will end up meeting each other. Whether it is Chandler and McGregor remains to be seen as of now as it could easily be Poirier and Oliveira clashing for the lightweight title as well.

UFC women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang is not too bothered by Mike Tyson’s prediction of her fight with Rose Namajunas.

Zhang defends her 115-pound title against Namajunas at the upcoming UFC 261 pay-per-view event taking place April 24 in Jacksonville, Florida.

And in a recent episode of his podcast, Tyson recently stated his belief to UFC president Dana White that Zhang would be destroyed by Namajunas.

What did Zhang make of those comments?

“That might be based on cultural differences between the East and the West,” Zhang said in a recent interview. “Easterners are relatively reserved and normally leave wiggle room when making predictions. There’s no defiance for no reason in our style. But Westerners are relatively outgoing and sometimes tend to pass judgement on things that haven’t happened yet.

“I also don’t think he’s really eligible to assess MMA as opposed to boxing, in which he has great experience. I could take it into consideration if he was involved with MMA, but he hasn’t really taken it up so maybe he’s just supporting from his country. His view hasn’t put any pressure on me or made me unhappy.”

While some outlets might take this as a dispute between the pair, it is simply a disagreement and Zhang still very much respects the boxing legend.

“… Instead, I respect him very much and I hope one day, he might take a chance in MMA. … I hope he can see this video.”

Dustin Poirier Brian Shaw

Dustin Poirier is known for his relentless attack on the feet in the UFC octagon, but he recently had the chance to show off his underrated ground game as well against one of the world’s biggest giants.

Poirier recently had the chance to get some grappling rounds in with World’s Strongest Man competitor Brian Shaw and did more than just hold his own.

In a video circulating on social media, Poirier appeared to get the upper hand against the 6’8”, 400-pound Shaw, even forcing him to tap to a rear-naked choke.

This isn’t the first time that fans have been left in awe of Poirier’s grappling prowess. At UFC 242, Poirier sunk in a guillotine choke that nearly forced former lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov to his first career loss in the Octagon.

In a recent appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, Poirier spoke about his grappling game.

“I submit people all the time; put people unconscious,” Poirier said. “Haven’t finished anybody in the UFC with it, but it’s coming.”

Poirier was also originally scheduled to face jiu-jitsu sensation Garry Tonon in a charity grappling matchup in February 2020 before Tonon pulled out after suffering a serious cut in training. It would be interesting to see how Poirier would fair in grappling events such as Submission Underground.

Shaw became the first man to win the Arnold Strongman Classic in 2011 and is well-known in strongman circles. Nicknamed ‘Gigantor’, he’s also a three-time World’s Strongest Man Champion, last earning the title in 2016.

Poirier is all set to compete in his trilogy fight with Conor McGregor this summer, while Shaw continues his preparation for the 2021 World’s Strongest Man competition. Poirier signed his half of the bout agreement for UFC 264 scheduled for July 10th on Friday, while McGregor announced the fight’s booking earlier this weekend.

Tito Ortiz Thinks He Would’ve Beat Jon Jones During His Prime

Tito Ortiz Jon Jones

Tito Ortiz is widely regarded as one of the great light-heavyweights in UFC history, and he thinks he would’ve given Jon Jones some issues when both men were in their primes.

In an interview with Sports Matters’ Jerry Coughlan, Ortiz was asked for a prediction for a fight between the two legends in their primes and predicted a split-decision victory.

Ortiz’s final fight in his tenure in the UFC came just months before Jones submitted Vitor Belfort at UFC 152. Ortiz suffered a unanimous decision loss that year to Forrest Griffin at UFC 148.

“What-if” scenarios are nothing new for fight fans and pundits alike. Jones has been the center of predictions involving UFC legends Brock Lesnar, Chuck Liddell and Ortiz.

‘The Huntington Beach Bad Boy’ went into greater detail in late 2019 in an interview with TMZ Sports.

“You stay in that angle, the outside reach of him, you’ve got problems with him,” Ortiz said. “I push myself harder than I pushed myself through my whole career. I’m doing amazing. My mind is in the right place, my body is in the right place.”

Ortiz last competed at Combate Americas 51 against Alberto El Patron, earning a submission victory in the first round by rear-naked choke. Before that, he battled to a trilogy win over Liddell in an event hosted by Golden Boy Promotions.

After Ortiz defeated Chael Sonnen at Bellator 170, Jones took aim.

“That man better enjoy his JV Victory and stay in his lane, I’d make him look like a white belt,” Jones tweeted.

With Jones starting a new journey at heavyweight and the 46-year-old Ortiz retired from full-time competition, the matchup is seemingly nothing more than a talking point now. But there’s no doubt a fight between the two legends in their primes would’ve been extremely entertaining.
