Former Bellator Champion Michael Chandler is finally set to make his UFC debut. His opponent; City Kickboxing’s Dan ‘The Hangman’ Hooker. The fight is a stroke of expert matchmaking on the UFC’s part. Dan Hooker is one of the staunchest Lightweights in the UFC’s roster, having picked up wins over Paul Felder and Al Iaquinta. However, most recently ‘The Hangman’ came up short against Dustin Poirier in a fight of the year contender. Alternatively, Michael Chandler has been long regarded as one of the best 155ers outside of the UFC. He holds wins over former UFC fighters such as Eddie Alvarez and Akihiro Gono. However Gono only amassed a 1-1 record for the company, and while Eddie Alvarez did become Lightweight Champion, he was comprehensively defeated by both McGregor and Poirier.

As it happens the two men to have last defeated Alvarez in the UFC, are headlining UFC 257. The same PPV card that Hooker and Chandler are co-headlining. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Daniel Cormier believes that the winner of their bout should capitalize on the exposure brought by a Conor McGregor PPV event. Just as Khabib Nurmagomedov propelled his name into the title picture, after clinically dismantling Michael Johnson at UFC 205. On the DC and Helwani show, Cormier recounted the event:

“Khabib’s on the prelims: ‘I want to fight with your chicken.’ All of a sudden they start to mention Khabib and Conor in the same breath.” “Khabib isn’t the champ yet; he’s a young guy on his way up, and then it just builds” (H/T MMA Junkie)

“For Chandler to be in the co-main event, it puts him in a perfect spot. And Dan Hooker, too,” remarked Cormier. “If I’m Dan Hooker and I win, I’m immediately saying something about McGregor. Whoever wins at 155 pounds on that fight card, you say something about McGregor. Because guess what? McGregor doesn’t have the ability to not respond. He will say something back. He’ll say something and elevate you. There’s a level of stardom that comes with fighting on (the same card as) and with this dude that I’ve never seen.”

McGregor’s opponent, Dustin Poirier, has stated that he believes Dan Hooker will have an edge over the former Bellator fighter.

Dustin Poirier

Ahead of a historic rematch with “The Notorious” Conor McGregor, former UFC Interim Lightweight Champion Dustin Poirier revealed how much longer he may have left as a fighter for the world leader in MMA.

Poirier appeared on Theo Von’s podcast, ‘This Past Weekend’, to discuss a multitude of different things going on in his career, one of which topics was his longevity inside the Octagon.

“I just signed an eight-fight contract with the UFC.” Poirier told Von. “My plan is to fight eight more times. You know, I want to finish this contract I’m on, fight eight more times. Then we’ll see where we’re at there. But I’m not looking past that or before that. I’m going to fight eight more times.”

Poirier is 7-1 in his last 8 fights, with one loss to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who is now seemingly out of the title picture after his retirement. The Lafayette native will look to take home the undisputed UFC belt in his next batch of confirmed fights. He will first have to get through a very motivated Conor McGregor who stands in front of him in a title eliminator at UFC 257 (Jan. 23).

“I’m driven by the main goal, becoming the world champion, being the best. I know that a win over a guy like this, at this point of our careers, it etches my name in the history book.. on its own page.”

“I’m in the books. I’m in the honorable mentions right now.” Poirier went on. “I’m trying get my own numbered page. I think a win over this guy does that and cements me as a legitimate combat sports professional in a time that’s full of great athletes.” (Transcribed by Report Door)

When the contract is fought out and completed, “The Diamond”, title or not, will take some time to consider what’s next in his already illustrious career. Perhaps, a ride into the sunset? Whatever the case may be, Poirier for now has no intentions of retiring just quite yet.

Do you think Dustin Poirier will become UFC lightweight champion?

UFC President Dana White provided an update on the Strawweight title and revealed that the promotion is looking to book the current champion Zhang Weili vs Rose Namajunas “this year and in Asia”

In an interview with ESPN’s Brett Okamoto, the UFC President claimed that Rose Namajunas remained the first option to fight for the belt and if any complications occur they will look to book Weili vs Carla Esparza. “We’re working on her, too,” White said of the Chinese Champion. “Obviously, the fight everybody wants to see is her and Rose. Hopefully we can get that done. If not, the next one in line would probably be Carla Esparza. We’re looking to do that fight this year – and in Asia.” (Transcribed by MMAJunkie)

The last time the UFC held a live event in China was at UFC Fight Night 157 in Shenzhen when Weili was crowned the champion for the first time by stopping the champion at the time Jessica Andrade in just 42 seconds earning her a performance of the night bonus.

The champion hasn’t competed since her split decision victory in a fight of the year contender with Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 in March last year. She also previously stated that she would like to defend her belt next against the former champion Rose Namajunas.

As for “Thug Rose”, she last competed in UFC’s first fight island event UFC 251 where she earned a split decision win over Jessica Andrade in what was fight of the night.

Do you think we see Zhang Weili vs Rose Namajunas next year?

Jake Paul has continued his pursuit of UFC double champ Conor McGregor by mocking his level of sparring ahead of UFC 257.

McGregor has been getting in boxing rounds with Irish prospect Dylan Moran (15-1) ahead of his eagerly anticipated rematch with Dustin Poirier on January 23. Paul, who has been chasing a fight with ‘Notorious’ for some time now was interested to learn more about who McGregor is sparring. The YouTube celebrity took to social media to unveil his findings.

“Conor’s taking easy fights. But he’s been sparring in Ireland, Paul said. “He’s been boxing, going against some phenomenal, exciting Irish talent. (The) kid must be really good because Conor’s a ‘good boxer’ right? And then we looked this kid up. Ladies and gentlemen, presenting to you: the big, bad, exciting Irish talent – Dylan Moran, the kid that Conor McGregor is sparring against. Take a look.”

Paul’s story then cut to a video of Moran being dropped three times in his first and only loss which came in 2019 against Dennis Okoth.

This appears to be Paul’s latest attempt to get under the skin of McGregor who has so far ignored the 24-year-olds jibes. After knocking out former NBA player Nate Robinson on the undercard of Mike Tyson vs. Roy Jones Jr. Paul called out McGregor and his SBG teammate Dillon Danis.

Since then, Paul has upped the ante by unleashing a tirade of abuse at McGregor which included insulting his fiancée, Dee Devlin. The viral star also gate-crashed a recent Danis interview by throwing water balloons at the BJJ wizard before fleeing.

Former Bellator and ONE Championship titlist Ben Askren has been heavily linked to a fight with Paul. However, once ‘Funky’ publicly agreed to the bout things went quiet. Askren has since accused Paul of backing out of the fight.

Do you think Jake Paul can convince Conor McGregor to fight him?
