Junior Dos Santos Planning For Three Fights This Year

Fresh off a loss to Alistair Overeem at UFC on FOX 17, Junior Dos Santos is now preparing for Ben Rothwell at UFC Fight Night 83. Santos explained to Portal do Vale Tudo that he plans to quickly come back and erase his loss.

“After my last fight, I told Joe Silva I wanted to fight again soon and I was glad they were able to get me a fight quickly. I think it’s important to fight more frequently so I can stay active. Rothwell is a very hard opponent, who is on a good win streak and has been imposing himself. He showed he can be very effective, especially in his last fight, when he submitted Josh Barnett, which was kind of unexpected.

“I think a win over him will put me back on the top of the weight class, maybe even close to a title shot. But honestly, I’m not thinking about the belt now. All I want to do is fight as frequently as possible. If everything goes according to my plan, I want to have this fight in April, then another one in August or September and then again in December. Three fights in one year is a good number.”

Santos is 3-3 in his last six bouts. UFN 86 takes place in Zagreb, Croatia at the Zagreb Arena on April 10th.

Anderson Silva is sticking to his story that he never used PEDs, despite failing a post-fight urine test after fighting Nick Diaz at UFC 183 which he was suspended for in 2015. At Thursday’s open fight workouts to promote UFC Fight Night 84, briefly spoke on performance enhancing drugs.

“The past is the past. I don’t want to get too much into that, but at the end of the day, I wanted everyone to know I’m not a liar,” said Silva. “Unfortunately it didn’t come off that way, but I’ve always told the truth. I’ve never used any sort of PEDs of any sort, and I’m excited to get back in there to fight, and who knows, even fight for a title.”

UFC Fight Night 84 takes place on February 27 at The O2 in London. The show will air exclusively on UFC Fight Pass.

Joseph Benavidez Says Henry Cejudo Doesn’t Deserve Title Shot

joseph-benavidez

Joseph Benavidez recently commented on Henry Cejudo receiving a title shot against Demetrious Johnson at UFC 197 over him. On Saturday night at the post fight press conference for UFC Fight Night 82 he called down Cejudo.

Here’s what he had to say:

“He hasn’t beat the top guys,” said Benavidez. “Even in his last fight, when he beat a guy that wasn’t right at the top, no one after that fight was like, ‘Oh, I can’t wait to see that guy fight for the title.’ That’s what it comes down to, basically.’

He added, “… That’s how I felt about it – that he didn’t earn it.”

Benavidez has lost to Johnson in title bouts twice.

Conor McGregor’s Coach Teases He May Go For UFC Welterweight Title Too

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh recently wrote a guest column for Irish sports website the42.ie. According to Kavanagh, McGregor might look for a fight against Robbie Lawler for the UFC welterweight title in the future.

“If that’s what Conor wants to do, I’ll absolutely support that move,” he wrote. “I think that would be fantastic. We’re already talking about making history in a few weeks, but can you imagine what it will be like if Conor is the champion in three weight classes by the summer?”

“He’s obviously already the featherweight champion, but we haven’t thought about that recently as we’ve been totally focused on the lightweight belt,” Kavanagh said. “Once that’s out of the way, we’ll talk about what to do with the featherweight belt.”

“As time goes on, it’s harder to predict what will happen in the future. Conor has a sort of unusual body type in that even though he can make featherweight; he’s still a very big lightweight. Given some time, as well as a bit of strength and conditioning work, he could also be a force at welterweight. This is an interesting time.”

McGregor is scheduled to fight Rafael dos Anjos for the UFC lightweight title at UFC 196 on March 5, 2016 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
