UFC President Dana White and reigning flyweight champion Henry Cejudo have two very different takes on the ESPN+ 1 stoppage.

Cejudo did more than just beat T.J. Dillashaw to retain his 125-pound strap in last weekend’s UFC on ESPN+ 1 main event. He announced to the MMA universe that he is a legit pound-for-pound threat, and he perhaps saved an entire division (at least for the time being).

His win, however, was not without controversy. Immediately after Cejudo KO’ed Dillashaw, the bantamweight king flew into protest mode over what he thought was clearly an early stoppage.

Uncle Dana’s Take

Dana White agreed with his bantamweight champion’s assessment.

“I thought it was an early stoppage, too. You’ve got two of the best guys in the world, two world champions in a super fight. Let them fight. Let them finish. I’m not taking anything away from Cejudo cause the fight went 20 seconds and Cejudo busted him up. I’m sure when you saw him sitting here, he looks like was in a three-round fight but Jesus Christ, let them fight. Horrible stoppage.”

As you might imagin, when Cejudo got his chance to speak at the post fighter press conference he didn’t see eye to eye with the boss.

“It was a great stoppage. I felt his body go limp. I went in at 146 pounds when I fought him, strong. Every blow that he took, he was eating some hammers. Personally, I thought it was a good stoppage because he was going to take another 10, 20 hits.

“Your body goes limp like that, you cut weight like that, thinking you’re going to go out there and take my belt from me, that’s not the way it works. I think it was a great stoppage. If I was to talk to that ref, you’re OK, we were both in there. We saw him go limp a few times. Watch it again. You’ll see it.”

We’ll never know if Dillashaw would have been able to weather the storm. We may find out, however, if he fares better in a rematch – either at flyweight or back up at bantamweight.

With Henry Cejudo’s recent victory over TJ Dillashaw, the future of the UFC’s flyweight division is looking very promising.

So much so, in fact, that former 125-pound title challenger Joseph Benavidez believes a rematch between himself and Cejudo is in order. He posted the following on Instagram, praising “The Messenger’s” performance and calling for them to run it back:

“No matter what was said between us before this battle I gained so much respect for Henry after our fight! Watching his performances and seeing what he’s done for this division (the one that I’ve been fighting for since it’s beginning) I have only gained more respect!

“Henry – other weight classes will be there but ours is still not certain. We have the power now more then ever to keep it moving forward and bring the respect it/we deserve! We represented for the flyweights that whole TUF season and delivered in our fight!

“(One of the hardest of my life and I know you feel the same) and we also did that on Saturday in Brooklyn! I want that belt, I was the first person to ever fight for that belt and I know the competitor in you wants to try to avenge the loss to me on your record!

“But like you said it is bigger then us … if you believe that to be true then this is the only option to keep this division moving forward, for all the current contenders, up and comers and the thousands dreaming right now of becoming the UFC Flyweight Champion.”

Cejudo and Benavidez initially met back in December of 2016. Benavidez took home a controversial split decision victory, handing Cejudo his second-ever loss in mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Cejudo went on to earn back-to-back wins before landing another shot at then-flyweight champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson.

The former Olympian defeated Johnson at UFC 227 this past August via split decision, handing “Mighty Mouse” his first loss at 125 pounds. This past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019) Cejudo made his first career title defense. He knocked out bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw in their superfight at 125 pounds.

On the same card, Benavidez defeated Dustin Ortiz via unanimous decision. Perhaps Benavidez will earn the next shot at the flyweight throne if UFC President Dana White decides to keep the division open.

If you thought the rub on former NFL star Greg Hardy was bad before his UFC debut, the conclusion of his first fight under the promotion’s banner didn’t help much.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding the UFC’s decision to book Hardy on this past weekend’s (Sat. January 19, 2019) UFC on ESPN+ 1 card. Mostly because of his history of domestic abuse, and the fact that UFC flyweight Rachael Ostovich – who was recently assaulted by her husband – was on the same card.

Hardy knocked out all of his opponents heading into his UFC debut in the first round. However, when he faced Allen Crowder in Brooklyn, Hardy was pushed a whole lot more than he ever has been. Crowder was able to get the fight into the second round, taking Hardy down and putting him on his back for the first time in his career.

Just when it looked like Crowder, who likely won the first round with his ground attack, was going to get Hardy back to the ground in the second round, Hardy nailed Crowder with an illegal knee. The illegal knee was clear-cut, and many believe Hardy did it on purpose. However, Crowder himself tells “The MMA Hour” that he simply believes Hardy’s knee was due to “inexperience” (via MMA Fighting):

“I don’t think he was looking for a way out,” Crowder said. “I think it’s more inexperience. He’s not been doing this very long. He stepped out to the side. I believe in his mind he thought … I know he knew he’s not allowed to throw that knee with me on the ground.

“But I think heated up in the heat of the moment, he just forgot for a split second and threw that knee trying to get that finish. He just made a mistake. Another mistake of many mistakes that he makes. But I don’t feel like he was trying to cop out of the fight.

“He’s a tough dude. I think it was just an inexperience kind of thing.”

After the knee, Crowder intended on taking a few seconds to recover and get back up to fight. However, the doctors immediately stopped the contest, despite Crowder feeling he had more left in the tank:

“It more stunned me than anything,” Crowder said. “I fell back to my back and I knew that he wasn’t allowed to do that. So I was like, alright, I’m gonna take a second, I’m gonna get back up, we’ll be good to go.

“Then the doctors start running in there and they immediately stop the fight and whatnot. Had that knee not hit me in the head, I feel like I was gonna get him back on the ground. I still had more left in the tank. I feel like if I got him back on the ground, I would have finished him with elbows like I planned on from the beginning.”

TJ Dillashaw: “I’ve Never Said I Wasn’t A Sore Loser”

UFC bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw does not take losing well.

The 135-pound champion is adamant to this day that he did not lose to Dominick Cruz back in January of 2016. Dillashaw lost a split decision to “The Dominator” and dropped the bantamweight title for his first defeat since 2013. Then, this past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019), Dillashaw was defeated by flyweight champion Henry Cejudo.

Dillashaw was attempting to cut down to 125 pounds and become a UFC “Champ Champ.” However, Cejudo finished Dillashaw via TKO in under a minute in the first round. After the fight, Dillashaw argued that the stoppage was early and he could’ve kept on fighting. Even UFC President Dana White agreed with Dillashaw’s assesment.

The 135-pound champion spoke to “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show” on the matter recently. Dillashaw said he was “furious” about the decision, and admitted it was a tough pill to swallow. He believes if he fought Cejudo 100 times, he wins 99 of them (via MMA Mania):

“Obviously I was furious. It was, I mean a 30 second fight when I know I’m the better fighter. It’s just rough to swallow. If anybody’s been in my situation or just competing in general, you know what that’s like,” Dillashaw said.

“If we fight that fight 100 times I will win 99 of them. This, unfortunately, was that one fight. I’m not going to swallow this one very well. It’s a tough one for me, I was very serious of that. Especially when I have the UFC doctors telling me it’s an early stoppage.

“You had Dana White talking about it was an early stoppage. It just sucks man. There’s no other way to really put it.”

Given Dillashaw’s reaction to his losses to both Cruz and, now, Cejudo, the bantamweight champion has been labelled with the “sore loser” moniker. However, Dillashaw doesn’t nececarilly seem to disagree with this:

“Let’s be honest, I’ve never said I wasn’t a sore loser,” Dillashaw said. “I don’t take losing very well. That’s not a guess about me. I let my emotions get the best of me, that’s why I’m so competitive and that’s why I am who I am.

“That’s why I put that many hours into the gym and train as hard as I do. Even in practice I get pissed when I lose. You know? I’ve been known for that. My emotions get the best of me.”
