This past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019) UFC on ESPN+ 1 went down from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

It was the first UFC event to be broadcast on an ESPN platform. In the main event, UFC flyweight champion Henry Cejudo made his first-ever title defense. “The Messenger” defended his throne against 135-pound champion TJ Dillashaw. A fight between Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Alexander Hernandez also headlined the preliminary card on ESPN.

Reebok has paid the fighters of UFC on ESPN+ 1 their sponsorship money. Main eventers Henry Cejudo and TJ Dillashaw lead the way with $40,000 paydays each. The full payouts include:

It was a long and emotional road for Rachael Ostovich to get to UFC Brooklyn.

Ostovich was recently assaulted by her husband, a fellow mixed martial artist, leading to questions if she would be able to make the walk against Paige VanZant this past weekend (Sat. January 19, 2019) in Brooklyn. However, Ostovich prevailed and was able to step into the cage and put on quite a scrap against VanZant.

Unfortunately for Ostovich, she was submitted in the second round via armbar. Speaking to media after the loss, Ostovich admitted she was grateful to be in Brooklyn, but the defeat was a tough pill to swallow (via MMA Junkie):

“I could show you, but I don’t want to cry on camera,” Ostovich said. “You know, I’m grateful to be here. I’m grateful to be standing here, even though the outcome wasn’t what I wanted or expected out of myself.

“It sucks, losing sucks. But it’s life. And we learn a lot in this sport. And that’s just how fights are sometimes. You can be winning the whole time and, in a scramble, it happens. That’s MMA for you.”

Ostovich has experienced a lot more mainstream media coverage than she is used to in the past several weeks. Not only due to her situation with her husband but the fact that ex-NFL star Greg Hardy, who has a history of domestic abuse, was also fighting on the card. Still, Ostovich called it just a bad day:

“It’s definitely been a whirlwind, this past couple of months,” Ostovich said. “And I just keep taking it day by day. And that’s just what it is, today, just another day. It’s not a bad life, just a bad day.”

Things didn’t go as planned for the bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw last night as he got dusted in the main event of UFC Brooklyn.

Reigning flyweight king Henry Cejudo needed only 32 seconds to turn away Dillashaw’s efforts to become the latest “champ-champ.” It was somewhat of a surreal moment that nobody saw coming.

Dillashaw would immediately protest the stoppage that some fans and UFC President Dana White felt was a bit too early for a fight of this magnitude. However, nothing can be done once a fight is called off by the referee (no matter how egregious it is).

Overwhelmed with disappointment and disbelief, Dillashaw took to Instagram to apologize to his fans for his performance or lack thereof.

Well F*#% that didn’t go as planned. Sorry to all my fans that I didn’t get to show all my hard work. Tough one to swallow having the fight taken from me like that. But I need to lead by example for my son and practice what I preach, brush my self off and pray that I get the chance to do it again.”

This is a setback for Dillashaw and his attempt to become only the fourth “double champ” in UFC history. He has already stated that he would love to run it back with Cejudo at 125-pounds.

Cejudo, however, doesn’t seem too keen on that idea.

The first-ever UFC event on their new ESPN platform was a grand slam for The Worldwide Leader In Sports.

ESPN+ signed up over a half a million new users for their streaming service on Saturday. That is by far the most successful day in the streaming platform young history. They also signed up 43,000 new subscribers on Friday, most of which has been attributed to the champion vs. champion main event for UFC Brooklyn.

The prelims which aired on ESPN and were headlined by Donald Cerrone vs. Alexander Hernandez averaged a 1.4 rating in the major markets. For comparison purposes, that number would be ahead of what most FOX cards averaged in recent years. It would also be the highest rated prelims for a non-PPV show dating back at least five years.

Official ratings will not be made available until Tuesday (Jan. 22, 2019).

According to ESPN, 1.8 million unique visitors searched MMA related content across all related ESPN platforms.

”All day, and across all platforms, we collectively demonstrated the promise of what we can do to fulfill our mission of serving a wider array of sports fans,” said ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro.

Star Power

The UFC did a good job at peppering fan friendly fighters such as Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone and Paige VanZant throughout the card. Although Cerrone and “PVZ” may not pack the name recognition as Conor McGregor, there were more than 1.6 million Google searches for the event. Which would have been the third-most of any event in 2018, trailing only UFC 229 and 232.

”Our first UFC Fight Night on ESPN+ was a thrilling evening of action and a great success. With a record-setting night that continued the momentum for ESPN+, delivered strong ratings on ESPN and marks a great start to our new agreement with the UFC,” said Kevin Mayer, Chairman, Direct-To-Consumer and International for The Walt Disney Company. “It was a milestone evening. With the success driven by outstanding joint efforts from the teams at DTCI and ESPN.”

Following his highest profile win to date, rising lightweight contender Gregor Gillespie had his bags stolen from the Barclays Center.

Gillespie defeated Yancy Medeiros in the second round of their feature main card bout, but then, things got weird for “The Gift.”

Gillespie and his coach had their bag’s stolen from backstage at the Barclays Center, he revealed later on Instagram. Being the nice guy that he is, Gillespie told the would-be thief that he can keep all the memorabilia, just please return his wallet and his mouth guards.

To who ever it is who stole mine and one of my coaches fight bags at the Barclays center tonight. Could you please just return my wallet and my mouth guards? If you stole the bag for memorabila, that’s cool you can keep that if you want, but id really like my wallet and mouth guards back. I REALLLLLY don’t want to go to the DMV – Gregor Gillespie”

“The Gift” improved his unbeaten record to 13-0 with his win over Medeiros.
