Jose Aldo’s mixed martial arts (MMA) career is beginning to wind down.

The Brazilian MMA legend only has a few fights left before he hangs up his gloves for good. Aldo recently spoke at a media day in Rio de Janeiro. “Scarface” revealed that he plans on fighting three more times this year before retiring (via MMA Fighting):

“I want to end my career here in Brazil. That’s what we have planned,” Aldo said. “I want to do these three fights… I’ll fight in Fortaleza now, and I’m already negotiating my next one for May (UFC 237), if I’m not mistaken in Curitiba, and then finish it in the second semester, which I know will have another event in Brazil.”

Aldo’s longtime coach and manager Andre Pederneiras revealed that they asked the UFC to put Aldo’s remaining three fights in Brazil so he can retire in his home country:

“We asked them to complete Aldo’s contract fighting in Brazil so he could give the final three fights of his career to the Brazilian fans here,” Pederneiras said.

“That’s his will, that’s what he asked Dana (White), and apparently that’s what’s going to happen.”

The first of those three fights will go down early next month (Sat. February 2, 2019). Aldo will face rising 145-pound contender and fellow countryman Renato Moicano. The pair will co-main event UFC on ESPN+ 2 from the Centro de Formacao Olimpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil. Aldo recently picked up his first win since July 2016.

He finished Jeremy Stephens at UFC on FOX 30 last July. Perhaps now Aldo can rack up another win streak and exit the UFC with a title opportunity.

Renato Moicano is “prepared for war” against Jose Aldo at UFC on ESPN+ 2 in February.

The show goes down from the Centro de Formação Olímpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil on February 2, 2019. This is undoubtedly the biggest fight of the 29-year-old’s career, and as he tells MMA Junkie, he isn’t taking it lightly:

“People have to remember that Aldo isn’t just any opponent,” Moicano said. “He’s a legend, a champion. He’s a guy whom I highly respect, a great opponent and I’m thinking only about beating him on Feb. 2. What happens later, happens later.

“Right now I’m focused, training like I’ve never trained before. Really dedicating myself for this opportunity. I’m preparing for the best possible Aldo.

“On the fight against (Jeremy) Stephens, I thought he was looking good … I think he still has a lot of power in his strikes, he’s very much alive in the fight. So, really, I’m prepared for a war.”

Moicano has defeated some tough names at featherweight, including Jeremy Stephens and Cub Swanson. He’s currently on a two-fight win streak after suffering his first career loss to Brian Ortega in July of 2017. As for Aldo, he’s finally coming back into his own.

After back-to-back knockout losses to Max Holloway, “Scarface” picked up a much-needed TKO win over Jeremy Stephens in July. With a win, either man could very well push themselves into title contention.

A high-profile women’s strawweight fight has been added to the recently announced UFC on ESPN 2 card in Philadelphia at the end of March.

This week, the promotion announced its return to the City of Brotherly Love. UFC on ESPN 2 will mark the first time since 2011 that the Octagon will touch down in Philly.

The card is already starting to come together. Strawweights Michelle Waterson and Karolina Kowalkiewicz will throw down at the vent according to a tweet from ESPN’s Brett Okamoto.

Waterson vs. Kowalkiewicz is the second fight to be added to this card. The first was another strawweight bout featuring Alexa Grasso vs. Marina Rodriguez.

“The Karate Hottie” has won two consecutive fights in the Octagon. She outlasted Felice Herrig at UFC 229 in October after beating Cortney Casey at UFC Glendale in a controversial split call. The victories snapped a two-fight losing streak for the fan favorite.

Former title contender Karolina Kowalkiewicz lost her last fight to Jessica Andrade by first-round knockout at UFC 228. Before that, she defeated Herrig and Jodie Esquibel in back-to-back fights.

UFC on ESPN+ 2 will be headlined by an excellent bantamweight contest next month (Sat. February 2, 2019).

Familiar foes Raphael Assuncao and Marlon Moraes will lock horns inside the Centro de Formação Olímpica do Nordeste in Fortaleza, Brazil. As it turns out, the winner will be next in line to challenge for TJ Dillashaw’s UFC bantamweight championship.

At the UFC 232 pay-per-view (PPV) post-fight press conference, Dana White confirmed that Assuncao vs. Moraes II is “obviously” for the next title shot (via MMA News):

“Obviously the Assuncao fight is [for a title shot],” White said. “That’s a No. 1 contender fight.”

Assuncao and Moraes initially fought back in summer of 2017. It was Assuncao who came out on top with a controversial split decision win. Since their last fight, both men have done very well for themselves. After beating Moraes, Assuncao earned back-to-back victories in his next two fights.

As for Moraes, one could argue he has had the more impressive resume of the pair as of late. Moraes has earned three straight victories over some of the most fierce competition the 135-pound weight class has to offer. He has defeated John Dodson, Aljamain Sterling, and Jimmie Rivera, the latter two coming by way of devastating knockout.

Regardless of who comes out on top in February, either man will certainly be deserving of the next title opportunity.
