We’ve been guilty of declaring “eras” a little prematurely around here, but I think it’s safe to say that we’re already living in the Durkin Era, and are rapidly approaching the Geological Epoch of Patrick Muthatruckin’ Durkins. Trust me, guys. Just watch it happen.

Of course, Lawler represents the toughest test of Brown’s career by far, and it’s not surprising that the oddsmakers are favoring him here. On the other hand, Brown keeps knocking people off in brilliant performances, showing no regard for these silly, arbitrary betting lines with their pluses and minuses that half of you still don’t understand. Anybody feel like dropping some cash on him?

Fresh off third round TKO’s of Erick Silva and Jake Ellenberger at Fight Night 40 and UFC 173, respectively, Matt Brown and Robbie Lawler are set to do battle in what will surely go down as “The greatest brawl since Frye vs. Takayama” at UFC on FOX 12 on July 26th. The announcement was made by Dana White via Twitter earlier today, who also confirmed that the winner of Brown vs. Lawler will earn the next shot at Johny Hendricks when he returns from bicep surgery.
Suffice it to say, any MMA fan whose isn’t verging on a Scanners-esquemindsplosiontrying to comprehend the awesomeness of this fight is either dead or dying. Lawler and Brown are essentially mirror images of each other — uber-violent, no-nonsense brawlers who have experienced improbable career comebacks in recent years — and their upcoming clash is all but guaranteed to deliver a “Fight of the Year” nominee and a clear cut #1 contender at 170 lbs.
Is it just me, or does the booking of Lawler vs. Brown signify the culmination of what has been an amazing couple of months for MMA?

Is it just me, or does the booking of Lawler vs. Brown signify the culmination of what has been an amazing couple of months for MMA? The past few UFC events have all delivered in terms of excitement, Bellator 120 was great in its own strange way, and despite being booked less than an hour ago, Brown vs. Lawler has already has already resulted in the NASDAQ going up 45 points, SKOAL’s lifetime sales tripling, and the subject of the Third Eye Blind song “Jumper” finally deciding to step back from that ledge, my friend.
MMA comes in ebbs and flows, Nation, and right now, we are in a flow. Or an ebb, maybe. I never really understood that expression. Regardless, let’s all just hold hands and pray that the injury Gods don’t f*ck this one up for us. Kumbaya, my lord, Kumbaya…
The matchup seems tailor-made to give “Rumble” another high-profile win before he’s launched into title contention. Or, to put it another way: This looks like a damn squash match. Sure, anything can happen in an MMA fight, but when you put one of the UFC’s most powerful 205-pound contenders up against a guy whose body has been steadily disintegrating before our eyes, it’s pretty obvious what the promotion would like to see happen here.
No other fights have been booked for UFC on FOX 12, which will take place at San Jose’s SAP Center.

It’s deja vu in the MMA world as Josh Thomson claims that his phone was stolen after his twitter issued an inflammatory call-out of Nick Diaz early this morning.
Stern words, sterner than Thomson is usually known for (unless he’s talking about gay marriage). July 26th, in case you forgot, is the date of UFC on FOX 12, located in Thomson’s hometown of San Jose.
Thomson sent out a series of tweets several hours later, claiming that his phone was stolen and that he’d never tweet such sordid things:

Thomson sent out a series of tweets several hours later, claiming that his phone was stolen and that he’d never tweet such sordid things:
What’s the CagePotato verdict? Meh. The tweet, while crass, was ultimately benign. It’s not like he was pulling a Jon Jones. Furthermore, Thomson’s reaction to it was swift and consistent. Unlike Jones, he didn’t give a dozen different excuses ranging from a rogue PR firm to a hacked phone. Was Thomson telling the truth though? That’s a little harder to tell. It’s pretty miraculous that the thief was an MMA fan knowledgeable enough not only to know Nick Diaz was from Stockton, but that UFC on FOX 12 took place on the 26th and in San Jose. Maybe Thomson called out Diaz in an alcohol induced haze? The tweet was written at about 4 am, after all. MMA historian and Bleacher Report lead writer Jonathan Snowden put it a little more succinctly:
We’ll add any updates as they come. Until then, we’ll be working on a database of all the times phones were hacked and stolen in MMA.
