Tonight’s (Sat., January 27, 2018 ) UFC on FOX 27 is in the books from the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, and longtime top middleweight Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza has made a victorious return to the octagon after losing his last fight to current champ Robert Whittaker.

Souza took out hometown favorite Derek Brunson with a first-round head kick and some huge follow-up punches in the main event, solidifying his No. 3 status as Luke Rockhold and Yoel Romero meet for the interim 185-pound belt at February 10’s UFC 221.

In the co-main event, Andre Fili eeked by Dennis Bermudez by split decision in a close bout.

Jacare Souza made lightning strike twice against Derek Brunson.

The stage was set for the main event of UFC on FOX 27. Back in 2012, Souza knocked out Brunson in 41 seconds. In their second encounter inside the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, Brunson made an attempt to avenge that loss.

The two respected each other’s abilities standing and didn’t rush things early on. Souza looked to find his range with kicks. Brunson threw a combination that was blocked by his opponent.

Souza went for a counter right hand. Brunson fired off a right hand of his own. “jacare” took Brunson down, but couldn’t maintain control. Brunson charged in with a combination. Souza rocked Brunson with a head kick and finished him off with strikes.

Final Result: Jacare Souza def. Derek Brunson via TKO (head kick & strikes) – R1, 3:50

Dennis Bermudez has dropped his third bout in a row after suffering a split decision loss to Andre Fili.

The co-main event of UFC on FOX 27 featured featherweight action. Bermudez and Fili went one-on-one inside the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The two quickly met at the center of the Octagon. Bermudez fired off a leg kick and shot in. It didn’t take long for the two to separate. Bermudez was finding a home for the jab. “The Menace” got a body lock and pressed his opponent against the fence. Surprisingly, Fili took down Bermudez but it was brief. Once again, Fili scored a takedown near the end of the round.

Right way, Bermudez went for a takedown in the second stanza,. Fili once again scored a takedown. Bermudez kept going to the calf kicks. A left hand followed by a right hook was there for Fili. Bermudez landed a knee to the body. Fili shot in and scored a takedown. Like his takedowns prior, Fili had no control on the ground.

Bermudez went for a body shot early in the final round. Blood trickled from the nose of Fili. “Touchy” landed an uppercut while backing up. Time was called for an accidental low blow on Fili. Time resumed and Bermudez connected with a leg kick. Fili landed a left hand. Bermudez found a bevy of success with strikes in the final minute. Fili wasn’t done yet as he fought back. “The Menace” landed an inside elbow and scored a big takedown. He went for an armbar, but Fili reversed to gain top position to end the fight.

Fili was awarded the split nod.

Final Result: Andre Fili def. Dennis Bermudez via split decision (29-28, 27-30, 29-28)

Gregor Gillespie made short work of Jordan Rinaldi.

Gillespie vs. Rinaldi served as the second bout on the main card of UFC on FOX 27. The two did battle live inside the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Gillespie wasted little time being on the offensive. Rinaldi went for a knee, but had his leg caught. Rinaldi was able to get free. It didn’t take down for Gillespie to get a single leg takedown. He soon went to mount.

He dropped some punches down. Rinaldi kept moving, but Gillespie remained in control. He took the back of Rinaldi and flattened him out. He blasted him with ground-and-pound for the finish.

Final Result: Gregor Gillespie def. Jordan Rinaldi via TKO (strikes) – R1, 4:46

Frank Camacho didn’t do enough to get past Drew Dober.

The opening main card bout on the UFC on FOX 27 card featured a welterweight clash between Dober and Camacho. The action was held inside the Spectrum Center in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Dober landed a leg kick early. Camacho landed some short punches in close. They engaged in a clinch battle. Camacho swept his opponent and wound up in side control. Dober was able to get back to his feet quickly. Once again, Camacho was able to score a takedown. He wobbled Dober with a left hand near the end of the round.

Dober went for a takedown early in the second stanza, but couldn’t get it. Camacho reversed him and gained top control. The two traded strikes. Camacho was breathing heavy. Dober got in some clean shots. Dober began firing off due to his opponent’s gas tank depleting. Dober continued to go on the attack. Blood trickled from the nose of both men.

Camacho connected with a left hand early in the final frame. He thwarted a takedown attempt. Blood poured down the side of Dober’s eyebrow. Camacho landed a right hand. He landed numerous short shots as Dober went for a takedown. Camacho used his judo to end up in top control. Dober got back up as Camacho once again couldn’t hold his opponent down.He landed a knee to the body. Dober landed a short elbow.

All three judges scored the fight for Dober and one judge even gave him all three rounds.

Final Result: Drew Dober def. Frank Camacho via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
