Matt Brown entered Sunday’s UFC Live event on a three-fight losing streak. John Howard entered on a two-fight losing streak. Both men were looking at a situation where they may have needed a win to keep their spots on the UFC roster.

Which may mean Howard is out of a job.

Brown beat Howard by unanimous decision Sunday after 15 minutes of close, back and forth fighting, and although it wasn’t a thrilling fight, it was enough for Brown to save his job in the UFC. Howard will have to be anxious this week as he wonders if he’ll get another chance inside the Octagon.

“I just had fun,” Brown said afterward. “Mad props to Howard — what a f**king warrior he is,” Brown said before realizing he had just sworn on live television and asking not to be fined.

Whether Brown is fined or not, at least he can be confident that the win saved his job. Brown hadn’t won a fight since beating James Wilkes in 2009.

The win improves Brown’s record to 12-10. Howard falls to 14-7.

Matt Mitrione had another impressive showing Sunday night in Pittsburgh, as the former NFL player improved his mixed martial arts record to 5-0 with a second-round knockout victory over Christian Morecraft.

As he has consistently since breaking into the UFC through The Ultimate Fighter, Mitrione showed that his size and strength make him a force to be reckoned with, and he also showed impressive punching power in finishing the fight.

Mitrione also has a goofy sense of humor, which he showed off as well.

“I piss excellence,” Mitrione said in the Octagon afterward.

Mitrione knocked Morecraft down with a straight punch to the nose in the early going, and then after an extended stand-up exchange, Mitrione knocked Morecraft down with a couple of hard punches that appeared close to ending the fight. Morecraft was able to cling to Mitrione on the ground until he recovered, but the first round was definitely Mitrione’s.

After an exchange in the first couple minutes of the first round, Morecraft charged at Mitrione and took him down against the fence, but he wasn’t able to do anything with his advantageous position. After a stalemate on the ground caused the referee stood them up, Mitrione went to town, dominating Morecraft with punches and finishing him with a three-punch combination that knocked out Morecraft’s mouthpiece and left him sprawling on the canvas.

Mitrione, who played nine games for the New York Giants in 2002, is a big, strong athlete with a promising future in MMA. Morecraft, whose record falls to 7-2, is a big, strong athlete as well. But Sunday night’s fight showed that Morecraft isn’t in the same league as Mitrione.

The reason that Nate Marquardt failed to pass his required medical examinations remains murky, but one thing is clear: UFC President Dana White is not happy about it.

White said on the UFC Live pre-fight show on Versus that he’s angry at Marquardt for failing to adequately address the issues that the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission told him to address, and that Marquardt should come clean with UFC fans about what, exactly, those issues are.

Both White and a Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission official said they were legally prohibited from offering details about Marquardt’s pre-fight medicals.

White said that the Pennsylvania commission is “the best commission in the United States,” and that its privacy rules are strict, meaning Marquardt’s medical issues won’t be revealed unless Marquardt himself reveals them.

“Nate Marquardt’s gonna have to man up and come out and tell the world why he didn’t pass his medicals,” White said. “When he does that I think everybody is going to understand why he was cut from the UFC.”

White said he believes in second chances, but he doesn’t expect to give Marquardt another chance.

“I think it’s pretty clear to the fans and everybody else that I’m pretty disgusted with Nate Marquardt. He’s been cut from the UFC, he won’t fight in the UFC ever again,” White said. “Bottom line is, what Nate Marquardt’s thing is, it’s bad enough to be cut from the UFC.”
