Jack Hermansson

In the UFC Vegas 16 main event, we have an intriguing middleweight match-up between Jack Hermansson and Marvin Vettori. ‘The Joker’ has had two previous opponents fall out and is fighting Vettori on very late notice. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: I’m backing Jack Hermansson in this one. I think this is a 50-50 fight on paper but give the edge to ‘The Joker’ for a couple of reasons. Firstly, he has already beaten people who are at a higher level. Secondly, Vettori was supposed to compete at UFC 256 next week and a rushed weight cut could impact him at some point in this five-round fight. I expect Hermansson to ultimaley edge this one out on the judge’s scorecards.

Prediction: Jack Hermansson

Karim Nathan: I was quite surprised to see Vettori being the favourite for this one, Hermansson is the more experienced fighter and I feel they balance out in the grappling department but Hermansson has a slight edge in the stand up. I believe we will see a lot of clinch fighting in this one and will come down to who can get the better in the clinch situations and who can control the other one better. Im going with a Hermansson unanimous decision based on that he was training for 5 rounds and I believe his experience will help him out in this one.

Prediction: Jack Hermansson

Ross Markey: Given the short-notice circumstances surrounding this matchup, it’s hard to separate either Vettori or Hermansson in my opinion. Credit to Hermansson for remaining on this card following fallouts with both Darren Till and Kevin Holland, and credit to Vettori for drafting in on short-notice. I’d have to agree with Karim on this one. It’s quite puzzling how Vettori enters this one as a favourite in most books. He’s certainly able to match the grappling chaps of Hermansson, although the Swede may have the better finishing instincts in some of those possible exchanges. While it’ll certainly prove difficult for Hermansson to put someone like Vettori away on the feet, I’m picking him to score a finish in this one, against a very gritty Vettori.

Prediction: Jack Hermansson

Abhinav Kini: I was also surprised to see Vettori being the betting favorite for this. While he’s a good grappler in his own right, I feel Hermansson is on a slightly higher level and will have success taking him down. If Vettori is able to stop those takedowns, the fight is certainly interesting on the feet and he has a much better chance of winning. That said, I don’t see that happening as I predict a submission win for Hermansson in the first few rounds.

Prediction: Jack Hermansson

Ryan MacCarthy: I was very surprised to see Jack Hermansson as the underdog in the bout. Vettori is really a guy who flies under the radar. I don’t think he gets the credit he deserves, but this this is a very big step up in competition for him. I really like Hermansson in this one. I just feel stylistically he matches up tough and he’s been fighting much higher level competition. I see Hermansson taking this in the 3rd round via submission.

Prediction: Jack Hermansson

Away from the main card UFC Vegas 16 has some pretty fun fights we at LowKickMMA will be hitting up our lists of new betting operators drop money on. Join us as we preview, predict, and hopefully win some cash on several of the UFC Vegas 16 undercard fights.

Gabriel Benítez vs. Justin Jaynes

Gabriel Benítez has been a long-time fixture of the UFC featherweight division. It’s the weight-class we at LowKickMMA would prefer him to compete in. Despite that, we still think Benitez will have enough to get by in this lightweight fight and the oddsmakers agree as they’ve priced him at -220. The +180 underdog Jaynes is a tough man, and we think he’ll be able to survive all three rounds for a decision loss which is priced at +190.

Louis Smolka vs. José Alberto Quiñónez

He seems to have been around forever but Louis Smolka is still just 29-years-old. The American has fought the best of the best at flyweight and bantamweight. It’s not always gone his way but we expect it will do at UFC Vegas 16 and so do the bookmakers who’ve priced him at -137. Jose Alberto Quinonez has been easily dealt with each time he’s stepped up his level of opposition. The +110 underdog suffered a tough first-round KO loss against Sean O’Malley last time out and we think that could still be mentally affecting him heading into this fight.

Matt Wiman vs. Jordan Leavitt

Since taking five years off Matt Wiman hasn’t looked like what he used to. Two consecutive losses against low-level opposition make this a make or break fight. Unfortunately, he’s facing a highly fancied Contender Series prospect in Jordan Leavitt who is a huge -400 favourite heading into this one. We’ll be betting on him to stop Wiman at odds of +100 but if you fancy the veteran to pull off an upset win he’s +300 to do so.

Gian Villante vs. Jake Collier

Our final pick comes from the first fight of the evening. Gian Villante is sticking at heavyweight after looking sloppy in defeat against Maurice Greene last time out. It’s a terrible move and one we’d usually predict would end disastrously for Villante however on this occasion he’s matched against someone who even more unsuited to the heavyweight division in Jake Collier. A former middleweight who was blasted out by UFC debutant Tom Aspinall earlier this year. He enters as a +170 underdog while Villante is -200 and well worth adding to our parlay.

Jack Hermansson vs. Marvin Vettori

Jack ‘The Joker’ Hermansson may be highly ranked at 185lbs but he is not particularly fancied by the bookmakers in this one. The middleweight #4 can be found at odds of +125 just to win this late notice fight against Marvin Vettori. The Italian is stepping into his first main event and the biggest fight of his life with just one weeks’ notice. Despite that he is the favourite to emerge victorious at odds of -150. Both guys have decent striking and really impressive ground games. It really is a pick ‘em fight. However, we will be backing Hermansson for a few reasons. Firstly, he has already beaten people who are at a higher level. Secondly Vettori was supposed to compete at UFC 256 next week and a rushed weight cut could impact him at some point in this five-round fight. Lastly the odds for ‘The Joker’ are quite generous, borderline disrespectful and just too good to pass up.

Ovince St Preux vs. Jamahal Hill

In the UFC Vegas 16 co-main event we have another instance where we think the bookmakers are off. Ovince St Preux is a long-time contender at light-heavyweight and even fought for the interim title against Jon Jones. Despite that, he is the underdog at odds of +140 against impressive prospect Jamahal Hill who enters the -170 favourite. As impressed as we’ve been with Hill it’s impossible to back him in this situation. Not only do his odds present no value he’s also taking several steps up in level. OSP dispatched of another highly-fancied prospect last time out and we expect him to do so again on Saturday night.

Montana De La Rosa vs. Talia Santos

The women’s flyweight division is of the toughest to bet on in MMA. Outside of the champ, these ladies are all capable of beating each other on any given night. Montana De La Rosa has a win over Mara Romero Borella who edged out Talia Santos in her UFC debut last year. If you’re a fan of MMA math De La Rosa seems like the way to go. However, that’s not our thing. Santos looked very strong in her win over Molly McCann last time out and we are picking her to continue her good form at UFC Vegas 16. The oddsmakers seem to agree having priced her at -220 to get the win. You could potentially plump up your bet by picking Santos to get the decision win at -110 or if you fancy De La Rosa to earn the victory she’s priced at +180.

Roman Dolidze vs. John Allan Arte

Roman Dolidze is an undefeated Georgian prospect who we are expecting to steal the show at UFC Vegas 16. The bookmakers are backing him too at odds of -200. So, we’ll be definitely picking him to finish the +170 underdog John Allan Arte. Dolidze is -110 get the finish by any method and we think is the most certain bet of the night.

Movsar Evloev vs. Nate Landwehr

Opening up the UFC Vegas 16 main card we have a fun featherweight fight. The undefeated Russian fighter Movsar Evloev is of course the betting favourite but his -600 odds seem very harsh on Nate Landwehr who looked great against Darren Elkins last time out. If you fancy ‘The Train’ to pull off the upset you can get huge +450 odds. Otherwise, we advise avoiding this fight unless you are able to pick the round Eveloev gets this done.

Who will you be betting on at UFC Vegas 16?

Deiveson Figueiredo vs. Alex Perez Staff Predictions

Deiveson Figueiredo

In the UFC 255 Deiveson Figueiredo is set to make his first flyweight title defence against Alex Perez who is the first-ever Contender Series fighter to compete for UFC gold. Who’ll emerge as the 125lb champion? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: It’s hard to pick against Deiveson Figueiredo in this one. The Brazilian looked flawless when picking up the title and seems to be going from strength to strength. For me, this opportunity has come just a little too early for Alex Perez who I expect to be outgunned for as long as this fight lasts.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Karim Nathan: For the main event I feel like a lot of people aren’t giving Perez the props he deserves, he is on a good run in the flyweight division and just stopped the guy that beat Figueiredo. I still feel that Figueiredo should be able to get it done but I wouldn’t be totally surprised by an upset here. Figueiredo’s last two performances have been something amazing and the last one against Benavidez might be up there with the best title performance’s ever. Im going with a Figueiredo third round KO.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Alex Lough: Let me start off by saying that even though he’s not as big of a name, I think Alex Perez is a much better fight than Cody Garbrandt. He’s a very technical striker with an extremely slick ground game who isn’t as… chinny, as Cody. I think his game offers more of a threat to Deiveson Figueiredo than Garbrandt’s boxing. That being said, I still have to side with Figueiredo. He just has obscene power that would hold up at 145, and while his submission game mainly consists of snatching dudes necks, it could be enough to make Perez hesitate to shoot in. I expect it to be a good fight, and Perez could steal it if it goes into the later rounds, but look for Figueiredo to put it away in the third.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Abhinav Kini: Figueiredo vs. Perez is a heck of a fight between two genuinely exciting fighters. Perez has the volume and wrestling while Figueiredo has the power, precision and submissions. I believe (or hope) this could be a Fight of the Night but it will more than likely be a Performance of the Night with Figueiredo getting the KO/TKO in the 2nd or 3rd round. His power is just too much for that division and it will be hard for Perez to avoid it for 25 minutes in my opinion.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Lewis Dunn: I think we are witnessing a new era of the men’s flyweight division. Off the back of two dominant victories against multiple-time title challenge Joseph Benavidez. I think we are going to see Figueiredo make easy of work of Perez and begin a title run that I believe will last for a long time. Of course, this is MMA and anything can happen. But, if Perez is to win he will need to drag Figueiredo into deep waters and enter the championship rounds. We are still to see how good of a gas tank Figueredo has, where cardio is a big part of Perez’s game. Tire out Figueiredo and capitalize. However, I don’t think Perez will survive past round 3 and we will see Figuerido get his hand raised. My prediction Figueiredo by KO/TKO round 3.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Ryan MacCarthy: This is gonna be an awesome fight. Figueiredo is a heavy favorite for very good reasons though. He’s a -300 favorite while Perez is at +230 dog here. I like Figueiredo winning this fight, but that doesnt mean Perez can’t pull off the upset. He certainly can. Figueiredo and Perez are similar in that they both have power in both hands. They like to go forward and look for the finish. I think Figueiredo is more powerful than Perez. That’s why I love this sport, though, maybe Perez can win. I do think Figueiredo is a little bit slow. He doesn’t have combinations, he throws one punch at a time, maybe two. A Combination of speed and power will be key for victory for either of these men. I see Figueredo finishing this in the later rounds.

Prediction: Deiveson Figueiredo

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jennifer Maia Staff Predictions

Valtentina ShevchenkoIn the UFC 255 co-main event long-time flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko is set to square off against Brazilian submission specialist Jennifer Maia. Who’ll win? Valtentina Shevchenko

In the UFC 255 co-main event long-time flyweight queen Valentina Shevchenko is set to square off against Brazilian submission specialist Jennifer Maia. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA team thinks…

Jordan Ellis: Valentina Shevchenko all day! I think it’s almost impossible to make a case for anyone in the UFC flyweight division beating this woman right now. The Ukrainian striker is just on another level to her opposition. Jennifer Maia is a huge and justified underdog in this fight. In my opinion it’d be a victory if she simply makes it to the final bell – but I don’t think that will happen. Shevchenko by knockout!

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko

Alex Lough: Jennifer Maia has gotten to where she is by being good at everything. That’s not going to be enough against Valentina. Not to take anything away from Maia; though she’s only 3-2 in the UFC, she has picked up wins over some of the biggest names in the division going back to her Invicta days and deserves to be in the spot she is. But if anyone is going to beat Valentina – and I don’t think they will – they’re going to have to be crazy good at one thing and hope they manage to catch her with it. Maia just doesn’t have that in her arsenal. She’s as tough as a $2 steak though, and might even steal a round on the way to the final bell, but I expect it to be all Shevchenko the rest of the fight. Valentina by UD.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko

Karim Nathan: For the co main I just cant pick against Valentina she is so dominant and even though Maia is a good fighter and she showed it in her last fight, I don’t think she has enough to pull off the upset. The women’s flyweight might be the shallowest division in the UFC right now and I can just see Valentina stopping one contender after the other. I feel like we might not see a stoppage in this one though but Valentina wins a dominant decision.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko

Ryan MacCarthy: No one in her division is even close to Valentina. Valentina Shevchenko is going to mess up Jennifer Maia and light her up like a Christmas tree. This has the potential to be a straight-up massacre. Valentina is just too dominant of a champion. I feel like Jennifer Maia is tough and durable, but that only gets you so far. I feel like the only thing Valentina needs to watch out for is the ground game. Her striking is just too solid and dominant, she doesn’t even have to go to the ground most of the time. Valentina will this in the first 2 rounds by KO. It will be a dominant clinic of a performance.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko

Lewis Dunn: Shevchenko will be looking to add another defense to her flyweight title, and I think she will get it. I do not think there is anyone in the women’s flyweight division that is even close to Shevchenko’s level. And she has shown this over her three previous title defenses, with two coming by stoppage. The former Invicta FC champion Maia will look to cause an upset, but the chances of this are not likely. So far during her UFC career she hasn’t showed anything that convinces me she can beat Shevchenko. I’m going with Shevchenko on this one, she is simply better than her opponent and if she performs even close to how she has in her previous title defenses, I think we will see Maia get finished pretty early on. My prediction Shevchenko by TKO round 2.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko

Abhinav Kini: There’s not much to say about this fight. Shevchenko is a level above everyone in the division and Maia will be no different. She will try and take her down and in all likelihood fail. I see this being a comfortable decision for the champion.

Prediction: Valentina Shevchenko

Paul Felder vs. Rafael Dos Anjos Staff Predictions

Paul FelderIn the UFC Vegas 14 main event, we have what should be a fun fight. Paul Felder stepped up on just five days’ notice to face off against former 155lbs champion Rafael Dos Anjos. Paul Felder

In the UFC Vegas 14 main event, we have what should be a fun fight. Paul Felder stepped up on just five days’ notice to face off against former 155lbs champion Rafael Dos Anjos. Who’ll win? Let’s see what the LowKickMMA staff think…

Jordan Ellis: I think this will be a really fun and competitive fight but I’m picking ‘RDA’ to win for a few reasons. Firstly, he’s had a full camp to train whereas his opponent has not. The Brazilian has a much more varied game and I can see him winning in a variety of ways. Also, both men are 36 but have very different attitudes towards fighting right now. Felder keeps talking about retirement while Dos Anjos keeps talking about getting another title shot. I think he’ll look good in his first 155lb fight in years and ultimately stop Felder in the fourth or fifth round.

Prediction: Rafael Dos Anjos

Karim Nathan: I’m really looking forward to this one, I think we got a better main event stylistically than the one originally scheduled. Felder always brings it and he never backs down even if he just took it on 5 days notice and we all know RDA is game for whatever fight, just look at the killers he faced. I believe Felder will come out strong and look to the end the fight early and might take the first two rounds but then fatigue will ultimately kick in and RDA will start using his wresting and win the latter rounds. I feel this ends as a 48-47 to RDA

Prediction: Rafael Dos Anjos

Abhinav Kini: Usually, I would pick Paul Felder given the recent performances of Rafael dos Anjos. However, Felder taking this on short notice, it being a 25 min fight and the fact that he isn’t primarily a wrestler makes this very interesting for me. The last time Dos Anjos lost to a predominant striker was Tony Ferguson and that was 4 years ago. I have RDA edging it by decision.

Prediction: Rafael Dos Anjos

Ryan MacCarthy: Both of these fighters absolutely deserve an applause for taking this fight on the short notice they did. This is one of those things where fighters fight and both are showing they’re real fighters. I see Felder getting a finish in the later rounds. The only reason because I think you’re gonna see a really really loose, relaxed, and confident Felder. He’s doing it because he wants to. Rafael Dos Anjos is in a position where he has to. RDA has been preparing for a grappler this whole and now has to fight an elite level striker who happens to be extremely relaxed and loose. A loose and relaxed fighter is a dangerous fighter. Felder by TKO in the 4th round.

Prediction: Paul Felder
