On Saturday night (March 9), ‘Sugar’ returned to the Octagon at UFC 299, putting his bantamweight title on the line for the first time against the only man to have handed him a loss in his mixed martial arts career, Marlon ‘Chito’ Vera.

Through five rounds, O’Malley dominated the action, putting his world-class boxing skills on display and retaining his gold with a decisive unanimous decision. Speaking with Joe Rogan immediately following the fight, O’Malley made it clear that the next man on his hit list is none other than the promotion’s new featherweight king, Ilia Topuria.

“Dana, get me a jet to Spain, baby! I’m coming for Ilia Topuria,” O’Malley said. “He’s a scary f*cking dude. That excites me. Going up a weight class excites me, but honestly, I’m here for whatever. If you guys want me to knock out Merab [Dvalishvili] I’ll do that too, but Ilia is the most exciting fight for the people.”

Last month, Ilia Topuria scored a shocking second-round knockout of P4P great Alexander Volkanovski to claim his first UFC title.

Sean O’Malley and Ilia Topuria have plenty of options in their own divisions

With both Sean O’Malley and Ilia Topuria staring down a backlog of viable contenders in their divisions, it’s hard to imagine that the UFC would book a fight between the two titleholders at such an early point in their individual runs. Particularly when it comes to the bantamweight division and its top-ranked contender, Merab Dvalishvili.

The Machine’ has won his last 10 fights in a row, including a win over former two-division champion Henry Cejudo at UFC 298, and is the clear-cut next man in line for a shot at the belt.

As for Topuria, ‘El Matador’ has a few different options for his first defense of the 145-pound crown — chief among them being a rematch with Alexander Volkanovski.

Depending on how things play out at UFC 300 next month, Max Holloway could find himself at the front of the line. And then of course there is Brian Ortega, who is fresh in the minds of fight fans after his memorable performance against Yair Rodriguez just a few short weeks ago.

Michael ‘Venom’ Page formally introduced himself to UFC fans on Saturday night with a big win in his Octagon debut.

The former Bellator star’s unique style stifled the often entertaining offense of Holland with a variety of looping right hands and high-flying kicks. There was a brief moment in the second round when an ill-advised spinning heel kick took MVP off his feet, allowing ‘Trailblazer’ to move in and get top control.

Unfortunately for Holland, ‘Venom’ was able to work his way back up where he resumed control of the contest and ultimately walked away with a unanimous decision victory.

With his victory at UFC 299, Page moved to 22-2 in his mixed martial arts career. With Holland sitting as the No. 13 ranked contender in the welterweight division, MVP will likely find a number next to his name come Monday morning.

After making a name for himself on the regional scene with four straight first-round finishes, ‘The Big Boy’ continued the trend in his promotional debut at UFC 299 on Saturday night. In the opening seconds, Despaigne threw a thunderous head kick that took him off his own feet. Scrambling back up, Despaigne met the approaching Parisian with a booming right hand that immediately sent his opponent crashing to the canvas.

Parisian ate two more right hands on the canvas before the referee could step in and bring a stop to the bout.

Official Result: Robelis Despaigne def. Josh Parisian via TKO (strikes) at 0:18 of Round 1.

It goes down as the second-fastest knockout for a debuting heavyweight in UFC history. Despaigne is now 5-0 in his mixed martial arts career and has only needed a combined 37 seconds to dispatch his last four opponents by way of knockout.

Robert Whittaker got back into the win column with a fantastic performance against the returning Paulo Costa in their UFC 298 co-main event.

The opening round was fairly competitive with Whittaker gaining a small advantage via a series of nasty calf kicks to Costa’s lead leg. However, ‘The Eraser’ appeared to steal the round with a perfectly timed spinning heel kick in the closing seconds that had Whittaker on rubber legs.

Despite being bloodied and battered, Whittaker appeared to be the fresher fighter throughout the second round. ‘The Reaper’ continued to attack Costa’s leg and blasted the one-time title challenger with a brilliant one-two combination.

With the contest potentially tied at 1-1, Costa came out with a sense of urgency, but it did nothing to deter Whittaker from going on the attack. With three minutes to go, Costa was calling for Whittaker to stand in the center and bang with him. Whittaker refused to take the bait and stuck to his game plan.

Costa once again attempted to land the spinning heel kick, but Costa saw it coming this time and avoided the danger. With 10 seconds to go, Whittaker briefly attempted a takedown before bailing out and landing another solid combination as the final horn sounded.

Anthony Hernandez extended his undefeated streak to five in a row at UFC 298, earning a submission victory over Russian standout Roman Kopylov.

Kicking off the pay-per-view portion of the evening, ‘Fluffy’ gave fight fans inside the Honda Center something to cheer about with a stellar second-round rear-naked choke submission over Kopylov. The victory came shortly after Hernandez managed to get Kopylov to the ground.

Kopylov did his best to defend, but in an attempt to get back to his feet, he gave Hernandez the opening he needed to cinch his arm firmly under the neck and force a tap out.

Official Result: Anthony Hernandez def. Roman Kopylov via submission (rear-naked choke) at 3:23 of Round 1.

‘Fluffy’ moved to 6-2 under the UFC banner and 12-2 overall.

Mackenzie Dern and Amanda Lemos closed out the UFC 298 prelims with a bang on Saturday night.

Stepping in for a short-notice showdown with the one-time UFC title challenger, Dern showed her heart and determination throughout the three-round affair, never backing down even when she was battered and bloody in the second round.

Dern’s lead leg was compromised in the early going due to a series of vicious calf kicks courtesy of Lemos, but that didn’t stop Dern from marching forward and letting her hands go. However, Lemos nearly scored a finish in the second when Dern came rushing in and caught a counter that immediately busted up the Brazilian-American beauty’s nose.

Still, Dern never let up and narrowly escaped with a victory in the third after controlling a majority of the round with her world-class BJJ.

But despite her best efforts, it was Lemos who would have her hand raised after 15 grueling minutes.

Official Result: Amanda Lemos def. Mackenzie Dern via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
