Edson Barboza

In the UFC Fight Island 5 co-main event Edson Barboza is looking to snap his unfortunate two-fight losing skid. The former lightweight contender turned featherweight hopeful is set to face off against ‘Mr. Finland’ Makwan Amirkhani.

Round 1: A slow start to round one. Edson Barboza is edging forward and pursuing Makwan Amirkhani who is uncharacteristically taking his time in this fight. Barboza lands a huge leg kick – this first shot of the fight. It’s all feints and waiting halfway through this opening round. Amirkhani lands a nice jab. Barboza is targetting his opponent’s body. Amirkhabi finally explodes with a flying knee and this fight catches fire. ‘Mr. Finland’ shoots for the legs but the Brazilian anticipates well. He separates then catches his opponent with a sharp body shot at he sprints in to follow up. A clash at the end of the round sees Amirkhani finally secure the takedown after he catches a kick – he just doesn’t have the time to make use of it.

Round 2: Lot’s of hands fighting at the start of round two. Amirkhani lands a nice short uppercut. Barboza rattles in another hard body kick. Some more posturing before Barboza again targets the body with a big hook. This really is a fight of inches right now. One mistakes and it could be over, both men are aware of that. Just as I say that Barboza drops Amirkhani with a clean right hand. He tries to follow up on the floor. Barboza grabs for the choke but is unable to lock it up. The fight goes back to the feet. Barboza lands well. ‘Mr. Finland’ shoots in for the takedown but it’s stuffed. Another straight right drops Amirkhani again! Barboza jumps for the neck again but his opponent slips out again. A crazy round two comes to an end with Amirkhani on top but similar to round one he doesn’t have ample time to use the position to his advantage.

Round 3: The start of round three is the same as the previous two. A few moments of hand fighting before both men begin to engage. Barboza cracks the body with a hook. Amirkhani goes heavy after the takedown and gets it! Lots of time on the clock for him to play with right now. After some resistance Barboza accepts the position and now has Amirkhani in his guard. Barboza is threatening from the bottom with submissions against Amirkhani who hasn’t been able to get any offense despite being on top for some time now. The referee is urging Amirkhani to get busy. Another warning, the referee says it’ll be the last one. Soon after he stands them up – a huge moment. Barboza gets back to his impressive striking clinic on the feet. He’s putting it on his opponent at the end of round three. Amirkhani is clearly hurt again here but does well to survive all full 15 minutes – we go to the judge’s scorecards.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Edson Barboza def. Makwan Amirkhani via unanimous decision

The next UFC Fight Island 5 bout is at heavyweight. Long-time contender Ben Rothwell is hoping to stretch his current win streak to three. Marcin Tybura is looking to do the same. Someones’ good form has got to end. Let’s find out who it’ll be.

Round 1: Ben Rothwell pushes forward early. He let’s a flurry of punches fly. Marcin Tybura eats them all and gets back to the center of the Octagon. They momentarily break before Rothwell goes back to work. Lot’s of volume coming from Rothwell. He seems to want to get this one early. Tybura isn’t moving. He’s eating everything coming at him and firing back well. Rothwell is starting to slow down, perhaps understanding this is a tougher fight than anticipated. Tybura lands a nice one-two. Rothwell is targeting the body. This is a really fast paced first round between two in form heavyweights. Tybura is popping the jab to maintain range. Rothwell continues to press forward bobbing and weaving as he throws punches followed by a high kick. They clinch up and work the dirty boxing on the inside before breaking. Tybura rips in a big body kick. Rothwell takes a step back for a couple seconds before continuing his forward press. Lot’s of volume and a failed high kick attempt from ‘Big Ben’ before round one ends.

Round 2: A much slower start to round two. Tybura is actually the one pressing forward landing lots of straight shots. After about one minute aggressive Rothwell returns. He’s walking in square just trying to take his opponents head off. They end up against the fence, exchanging techniques and swapping positions. Back to the middle. Tybura is looking good in round two. He’s still eating some shots but is able to get off more of his own and he’s winning the clinch exchanges. Tybura lands and Rothwell seems to wobble for a moment. Maybe not, because now he’s steaming forward with a flurry of punches. He’s showing lots of heart and aggression but is being picked off in this round. Tybura is the much fresher fighter and is getting better as the fight progresses with avoiding his opponent’s attacks. Round two ends with Rothwell pressing forward. He lands a shot just after the horn sounds to end the second stanza.

Round 3: Tybura pops the jab at the start of the final round. He follows up with a straight down the pipe. Rothwell jumps in lands. He is getting picked apart by the Polish fighter though who is able to land several more than his opponent in each exchange. Tybura is really looking like a slick boxer in here. He’s pinging Rothwell with shots, dipping out the way of shots – now he shoots in for a takedown. Tybura takes the fight to the mat. He’s in the guard throwing short shots staying busy. Tybura postures up to avoid a triangle attempt before jumping back into the guard and hammering away with ground strikes. As the clock ticks down Tybura is putting more power in his punches. Rothwell doesn’t seem able to get up he’s stuck in a tough spot. In the final 30 seconds, Tybura is pouring it on lots of punches, elbows up until the final bell.

OFFICIAL RESULT: Marcin Tybura def. Ben Rothwell via unanimous decision

LowKick MMA will be bringing you UFC Fight Night: Moraes vs. Sandhagen Results throughout the night (Sat. 10th. October 2020) from the Flash Forum on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Taking main event honours, one-time bantamweight title challenger, ‘Magic’ Marlon Moraes looks to possibly earn another crack at division gold, as he meets with division all-rounder, Cory Sandhagen. Hoping to score his second consecutive win, Moraes last featured at UFC 245 in December of last year – taking home a close split decision win over former featherweight champion, José Aldo. Despite the close win, Moraes was overlooked in favour hos compatriot Aldo in regards to a title shot. Hoping to rebound to winning ways, Sandhagen dropped his first promotional loss when he dropped a rear-naked choke defeat to Aljamain Sterling at UFC 250 in June.

In our night’s co-main event, former lightweight mainstay, Edson ‘Junior’ Barboza looks to score his premier victory at his new featherweight home, as he clashes with Finish grappling ace, Makwan ‘Mr. Finland’ Amirkhani on short-notice. Barboza was originally scheduled to meet with ‘Super’ Sodiq Yussuf – with passport issues preventing the streaking division prospect from making the date.

In his second Octagon outing of the year, Barboza attempts to rebound to winning ways after a close decision loss to ‘Dynamite’ Dan Ige at UFC Fight Night Jacksonville in May. Making his second appearance on ‘Fight Island’ this year – Amirkhani scored an eye-catching anaconda finish over Danny Henry in July.

Khabib Nurmagomedov

Khabib Nurmagomedov has opened up on how he plans to beat interim champion Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 on October 24.

Gaethje presents a unique challenge to the undefeated Russian due to the fact he boasts impressive wrestling credentials. Nurmagomedov is unfazed by his opponent’s grappling ability and made that much clear while speaking to reporters during UFC 254 media day.

“Nothing changes,” Nurmagomedov said. “I’m going to try wrestling with him. If he’s going to defend my takedowns for a long time, I’m going to try second, third, I’m going to try 100 times.

“Of course, I’m going to box with him. I’m going to kick with him. It’s going to be kickboxing and wrestling mixed.”

“I think he has good wrestling defense, very good wrestling defense. He knows how to wrestle. He’s wrestled almost all his life. But I don’t think the last five, six years, he used his wrestling how I use. Because I always use my wrestling. In training, inside the cage, because wrestling and top control, this is what make me champion. I don’t think the last couple of years he becomes a very good wrestler.

“He has the base, like you have when he was a kid, but right now everything has changed. Of course, he knows how defend if someone try to take him down and we all know about his conditioning, too. If I’m going to attack him the first two rounds, the third round I think he’s going [to be] finished. Because he don’t have good conditioning.”

Ultimately, Nurmagomedov expects to be too smart for Gaethje who he predicts will get finished in the UFC 254 main event in round three or four, he said.

“I think my fighting IQ is much better than Justin Gaethje He’s just a tough guy. He like fighting. He like blood. He’s like real warrior but when we talk about fighting IQ, I think my fighting IQ is much better than he has.

“Of course, Justin can fight. He can go deep. He has heart. But if you’re talking fighting IQ, I think I have much better than him.”

“My goal is to make him tired. I’m going to make him tired. This is my goal. Maybe round No. 3 or round No. 4, my plan is finish him.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)

Do you think Khabib Nurmagomedov will be able to impose his will on Justin Gaethje at UFC 254?
