Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders went to all-out war in the main event of last night’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

There’s just no other way to put it.

The original headliner for the event was supposed to be Jimi Manuwa vs. Glover Teixeira. Teixeira withdrew due to injury and usual middleweight Santos replaced him. Manuwa then withdrew and Anders – also a middleweight – replaced him at light heavyweight. But although the fighters were ‘replacements,’ they fought like champions in Sao Paulo.

The hometown competitor came out winging his trademark powerful offense. He landed straight punches, knees, and massive kicks to the body. But Anders attempted to neutralize “Marreta” with a relentless onslaught of takedown attempts. Some were successful but he was unable to ground the Brazilian striker for too long. That is until he took Santos’ back and threatened with a rear-naked choke.

The Brazilian survived and even reversed position. He found his kicking range again, but the action was halted by an eye poke. When Anders sought another takedown after a brief break, Santos began unloading a nonstop torrent of short elbows and punches that left Anders battered as the bell sounded on the third round. He fell to the mat three times in a concerning scene, awarding Santos the win in an absolutely awesome fight that won “Fight of the Night” as it deserved to.

Last night (Sat. September 22, 2018) the UFC was in Sao Paulo, Brazil from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera. Although the card saw a ton of injuries affect it, the night produced some rather memorable moments.

In the final bout of the FS2 prelims, Charles Oliveira made history. He surpassed Royce Gracia for the most submission wins the UFC history. He did so by submitting Christos Giagos in the second-round with a rear-naked choke. As a result, he was awarded a $50,000 Performance Of The Night bonus.

Also, Antônio Rogério Nogueira put on a masterful performance of his own on the main card. Nogueira knocked out Sam Alvey in the second-round of their collision after putting together a beautiful barrage of strikes. “Lil Nog” was also awarded a Performance Of The Night bonus worth $50,000.

And of course, the Fight Of The Night bonus went to the heavy-hitting main eventers Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders. Both men put on an extremely entertaining fight. Unfortunately for Anders, he took so much damage in the third round from elbows that he was unable to make it back to his stool after round three.

The referee awarded Santos the TKO win as a result. Both men will be taking home $50,000 for their amazing contest.

This evening’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 is in the books from the Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil. Now it’s time to watch the aftermath in the post-fight press conference.

In the main event, middleweights Thiago Santos and Eryk Anders squared off at light heavyweight. Jimi Manuwa and Glover Teixeira both previously dropped out of the fight due to injury. The two replacement fighters put on a rousing three-round fight with Santos taking home a vicious referee stoppage.

In the co-headliner, Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira secured a brutally fast stoppage over Carlo Pedersoli. Neil Magny was his original opponent. Oliveira took out his anger quickly on his late replacement, flooring him with a huge punch in the first round and finishing the fight quick.

Overall, the event was a bit short on big-name value. However, it more than made up for that with the retirements of two longtime veterans. It was also an event to remember due to its wide variety of impressive finishes by several fighters. Santos was the obvious one, but there were many other worthy finishes.

There’s a good amount to unpack from Sao Paulo, so join us for the post-fight press conference streaming live after the main card here:

Last night (Sat. September 22, 2018) light heavyweights Sam Alvey and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira went one-on-one at UFC Sao Paulo.

Alvey entered the contest off back-to-back victories at 205 pounds. “Smile’n Sam” jumped up from middleweight and knocked out Marcin Prachnio in his divisional debut in February.

He jumped back into action four months later and defeated Gian Villante via split decision at UFC Fight Night 131. A win over a Brazilian legend in Nogueira would do wonders for the 32-year-old’s career.

Nogueira is a decade Alvey’s elder and an absolute legend of the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). The Brazilian has been fighting since 2001 and debuted with the UFC in 2009. Nogueira had lost three of his last four fights since 2014. He was flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) back in December.

The Brazilian was later cleared of the incident as it was deemed he took a tainted supplement. Now with his USADA troubles and injuries behind him, Nogueira was allowed to focus solely on Alvey.

In the opening round, Alvey seemed to get a nice rhythm going, landing shots and moving well. Nogueira was able to pick up the pace as the round came to a close. Once the second round got underway, however, Nogueira went off.

The Brazilian landed a big left hand that rocked Alvey. Nogueira continued his assault until he was finally able to stop Alvey with a barrage of strikes that sent him to the canvas.

It was a card full of retiring veterans at this evening’s (Sat., September 22, 2018) UFC Fight Night 137 at Ginásio do Ibirapuera in São Paulo, Brazil.

After Brazilian middleweight Thales Leites retired after defeating Hector Lombard earlier at the event, lightweight Evan Dunham met Francisco Trinaldo on the FOX Sports 2-aired prelims. Things didn’t go quite as well for Dunham, however.

The fight was an entertaining one. Both fighters had their moments, with Dunham mixing more footwork while Trinaldo looked to counter with heavy shots. “Massaranduba” appeared to be headhunting with several huge kick attempts as well. Dunham was resilient and was landing more shots overall.

The longtime Brazilian veteran had a noted advantage in power, on the other hand. He used it to land a perfect knee to Dunham’s liver. The strike forced referee Marc Goddard to call it immediately. Watch the impressive knockout right here:

Dunham retired after the fight, stepping down with the pure grace and class he’s exhibited throughout his entire UFC career. He received a ton of respect on social media because of just that. Watch him thank the crowd one last time as he gave a heartfelt farewell to the Brazilian fans:

Dunham steps down with an 11-8-1 record in the Octagon, therefore crediting Joe Lauzon, Gleison Tibau, Ross Pearson, Tyson Griffin, and Nik Lentz among his biggest wins. He fought top lightweights Rafael dos Anjos, Donald Cerrone, and Edson Barboza.

He was a veteran of an amazing 20 fights in the notoriously tough UFC lightweight division. We wish Dunham all the best in his post-fighting endeavors.
