UFC St. Petersburg’s co-main event will pit lightweights Islam Makhachev and Arman Tsarukyan against each other in what should be one heck of a fight.

Makhachev (16-1) has rattled off four straight wins since losing at UFC 192. The Russian fighter will surely have a large following in St. Petersburg. A win should earn the 27-year-old a bid in the top 15. As for Tsarukyan (13-1). A young man of Armenian descent, Tsarukyan is a decorated striker with a grappling game to match. The 22-year-old averages four fights a year since turning pro, this will be his first of 2019.

Round One

Both Makhachev and Tsarukyan look ready to go as they take the center of the Octagon. Tsarukyan throws a head kick to start that misses. Makhachev pumps his jab, Tsarukyan slips and regains his balance as Makhachev closes the distance. Tsarukyan looks to take Makhachev down but is having a hard time against the cage. Makhachev lands a trip takedown. He lands some punches but Tsarukyan gets back to his feet. Makhachev looks for a front choke but Tsarukyan defends. Both guys battling for position. Tsarukyan tosses Makhachev and keeps his hands grasped around his waist. Makhachev lands an uppercut in the clinch, he lets Tsarukyan go. The round ends.

Round Two

The fighters touch gloves. Makhachev pumps his jab and works forward to start round two. He throws a heavy body kick. Tsarukyan shoots a takedown from a far but Makhachev easily defends it. Tsarukyan throws a leg kick as he gets back to his feet. He goes high and nearly lands a KO blow. Makhachev defends a takedown and the men end up in a clinch halfway through the second stanza. The pace slows a bit as Makhachev runs the pipe, Tsarukyan bounces right back up to his feet. Makhachev has wrist control but Tsarukyan looks for a kimura, forcing Makhachev to defend. He lets the hold go to get back to his feet. Tsarukyan looks for a takedown of his own as he dives on Makhachev’s leg. The fighters grapple for position as the horn sounds.

Round Three

The fighters trade in the center of the Octagon to start the final round. Tsarukyan lands a right hand. Makhachev lands a head kick but Tsarukyan walks through it. Unreal. Tsarukyan offers a front kick up then dives on Makhachev’s leg. He works for it but Makhachev defends and looks for his own takedown. The men take a breather in the clinch and Makhachev eats an elbow on the break. Makhachev scores a takedown and ties up his legs. He blasts some right hands in Tsarukyan’s face. Somehow Tsarukyan gets back to his feet but Makhachev is on him like glue with one minute to go. He drives Tsarukyan into the cage and uses the cage to spring off and take Tsarukyan down. He laces his legs and punches Tsarukyan as the fight ends.

Another heavyweight bout takes center Octagon at UFC St. Petersburg when Sergey Pavlovich meets Marcelo Golm in a featured contest.

Pavlovich (12-1) made his anticipated UFC debut last November against Alistair Overeem. While the Russian lost that fight, he learned a lot from his first experience under the bright lights. As for Golm (6-2). After starting his UFC career off with a thrilling submission victory in October of 2017, the 26-year-old Brazilian has lost his last two fights inside the Octagon. He could be on the chopping block with a loss.

Round One

Pavlovich fires a straight left after eating a jab. Both men open up and waist little time. Pavlovich cracks Golm with a right hand. He lands another, then follows it up with an uppercut. He backs Golm up against the cage and lands a right hand, then another uppercut. Golm drops, Pavlovich drops some bombs. The fight is over.

UFC St. Petersburg will keep the main card rolling with a women’s flyweight bout between Antonina Shevchenko and Roxanne Modafferi.

Antonina, 30, is the older sister to UFC women’s bantamweight champion, Valentina. “The Panther” (7-0) will make her second walk to the Octagon in Russia. She is the highest betting favorite on the night with -350 [Bovada]. As for Modafferi (22-15). “The Happy Warrior” will make the walk to the Octagon for the fifth time in her UFC career. She will look to get her hand raised for just the second time against a Shevchenko sister.

Round One

The women touch gloves. Modafferi wants to get this fight to the canvas, Shevchenko wants to keep it standing. Modafferi pumps her jab early in round round one. Shevchenko seems to be much more measured here. She throws a body kick and lands a counter one-two on Modafferi. She throws a front kick that misses the mark. Modafferi does land a right hand but misses a follow up left. Shevchenko lands a hard body kick. Both women exchange in the pocket, Shevchenko angles off. Modafferi pressures forward and lands a couple of right hands. She presses and eats a knee. Modafferi looks for a takedown as she grinds Shevchenko into the cage. Shevchenko defends with a kimora but Modafferi steps over and advances her position. She uses a wizzer to throw Shevchenko. She quickly mounts Shevchenko and lands. The round ends.

Round Two

Modafferi presses to start, Shevchenko lands a sidekick. She then lands a right hand. Modafferi eats it and moves in, Shevchenko lands a one-two. She opens up on Modafferi with punches. Modafferi closes the distance and presses Shevchenko up against the cage again. Shevchenko is defending much better this time, however. The fight slows as the women grapple for a better position. Modafferi lands a trip-takedown. She ends up in side control with her legs trying up Shevchenko’s. Modafferi lands some punches and moves into a more advantageous position. However, Shevchenko looks for an up kick, Modafferi passes but eats some hammer fists from Shevchenko. Less than one minute to go in the round. Modafferi is masterful on the ground as she moves from position to position and landing strikes. The round ends.

Round Three

Shevchenko presses to start the final round. She lands a barrage of punches. Modafferi answers. Shevchenko is lighting up Modafferi here. Modafferi scores a takedown and moves to back mount. Shevchenko reveres and lands some punches. Modafferi sweeps Shevchenko and blasts some elbows. She gains mount and blasts more elbows. Here ground control is fantastic. Shevchenko hits a sweep of her own. She gets back to her feet and lands a few hard knees. Modafferi is holding on to Shevchenko, her hands are clasped behind her. Shevchenko blasts another knee. Modafferi breaks her grip but still has control. She presses but eats another knee. She pushes through and scores a takedown. The horn sounds.

UFC St. Petersburg will kick off the main card with a middleweight match up between Krzysztof Jotko and Alen Amedovski.

Jotko (19-4) likely needs a victory to keep his spot on the roster. After starting his UFC career winning six out of seven fights, the 29-year-old has dropped his last three straight. As for Amedovski (8-0). The Macedonian born fighter currently calls Italy home. He has competed all over the world, most recently getting his hand raised twice under the Bellator banner.

Round One

Both men take to the center of the Octagon. Jotko is physically larger than Amedovski by appearance. Jotko throws a high kick to start but Amedovski blocks it. Jotko winds up again with a kick but misses completely. Amedovski looks like he has some early jitters, he counters Jotko with a left hand. He presses forward as Jotko circles away. He lands a right on Jotko as Jotko dives for a leg. He gets Amedovski’s body and lands a takedown. He works his way through Amedovski’s guard and drops some elbows. Amedovski kicks Jotko off and gets back to his feet. He lands a spinning elbow on Jotko. Jotko goes to a knee momentarily. Jotko looks for another takedown and gets it. He slows the pace a bit in side control as he lands some ground and pound. 30 seconds left in the round and Jotko is in total control in half guard. The round ends.

Round Two

The fighters touch gloves to start the round. Jotko throws a front kick and presses forward. 45 seconds gone in the second round and the fighters have a much slower cadence than the first. Jotko throws a head kick and follows it with a double leg takedown. He ends up in side control and lands some punches to Amedovski’s head. He grinds his forearm into the Macedonian’s head. Jotko drives his elbow into Amedovski’s dome now. He moves into the crucifix position for a second, however, Amedovski popped his arm out with a quickness. 90 seconds left in the second stanza. Jotko drives his weight on to Amedovski’s upper body and pins his arm. He lands some nasty elbows that open up Amedovski. He pounds his face with several punches and elbows. The horn sounds.

Round Three

Amedovski pumps his jab to start the final round. Jotko throws a left and as Amedovski commands the center of the Octagon. Jotko is dancing on the outside, landing a left hand. Amedovski needs to do something. Jotko shoots a double from far and lands it. He postures up in Amedovski’s guard and lands. Amedovski kicks his legs up looking for a submission presumably. Jotko lands some more ground and pound and presses Amedovski into the cage. He moves into side control and continues the onslaught of ground and pound.
