Burgos Falls In UFC Featherweight Ranks

Shane Burgos played his part in a back-and-forth war with Josh Emmett, but the result ultimately affected his place in the featherweight ranks.

Burgos met Emmett in the co-main event of UFC Vegas 3 this past weekend as the highly-anticipated fight certainly delivered.

Although Emmett was compromised early on with multiple injuries, he persevered and managed to drop Burgos multiple times en route to a unanimous decision victory.

For Burgos, it ended a three-fight winning streak and also saw him drop down the featherweight rankings as a result. With the new UFC rankings posted, “Hurricane” dropped down four places to be tied at 14 with Sodiq Yusuff.

Emmett, meanwhile, kept his place at No. 8 while the likes of Dan Ige, Arnold Allen, Jose Aldo, Ryan Hall and the aforementioned Yusuff moved up one spot each.

Other notable changes saw Alexander Volkov drop down to No. 8 with Alistair Overeem moving up to No. 7. Volkov suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Curtis Blaydes in the UFC Vegas 3 headliner with the latter keeping his place as the No. 3 contender at heavyweight.

It will be some time before we see Josh Emmett back in action following UFC Vegas 3.

Emmett took on Shane Burgos in the co-main event this past weekend and was able to earn the victory via unanimous decision following a back-and-forth war.

It was all the more impressive considering he was compromised as he tore his ACL early on in the first round. By the end of the fight, he had also suffered a partial MCL tear, focal impact fracture of the femur, damaged cartilage and swelling.

As a result, it’s no surprise to see the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) hand him a six-month layoff to recover. However, Emmett will likely be out of action much longer than that as torn ACLs usually require at least nine months of recovery.

Other fighters to get 180-day suspensions were Roosevelt Roberts, Tecia Torres, Brianna van Buren and Courtney Casey.

Main event winner Curtis Blaydes is suspended for 45 days with no contact for 30 days due to a laceration on his lip while Emmett’s opponent Burgos is also out for 45 days.

Volkov Upbeat After Defeat

Alexander Volkov is looking at the positive side of things.

Volkov suffered a unanimous decision defeat to Curtis Blaydes in the UFC Vegas 3 headliner this past weekend.

Although he did have his moments late on in the fight, he was ultimately no match for the wrestling of Blaydes who used it to dominate majority of the contest.

Here is what he had to say after the fight (translation via Google):

“Never give up! Thank you all for your support! Different things happen in our work, but I’m not one of those who like to justify themselves. Something was enough, something was not enough. Fight is a fight, I gave all my strength, and inflicted maximum damage to my opponent. The stakes are always high, but not always everything is in our favor. Thanks to those around. Let’s fight for the glory!”

The loss makes it two in his last three outings after previously being on a six-fight winning streak.

However, it shouldn’t affect Volkov and his position in the rankings too much. Such is the nature of the division that a couple more wins should see him right back in title contention.

Curtis Blaydes doesn’t plan on changing his fighting style for anyone.

Blaydes earned the unanimous decision verdict over Alexander Volkov in their UFC Vegas 3 headliner last night. It was a dull affair that saw Blaydes utilize his wrestling for majority of the fight without landing any real significant damage.

And although he has had better performances — especially as he seemed to have gassed out in the championship rounds — Blaydes was happy with the win. He even believes his fighting style has made him a heel now.

“I think I know who I am now: I’m a heel,” Blaydes said at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “You don’t like what I do. I like to make you mad. I like to win.”

Blaydes: I Predicted The Fight

It wasn’t only the fans who criticized Blaydes, but also UFC president Dana White who was expecting a better showing after all of his trash talk coming into the fight.

But Blaydes is happy to earned the win in gritty fashion and still believes he delivered on what he said he was going to do.

“That’s probably the best part about this win is I predicted this, and I did it for 25 minutes,” Blaydes added. “It didn’t look the best, but I’m OK with having a gritty win like that. I know a lot of fans didn’t like it. I’m OK with that. It makes me happy.”

Blaydes, however, acknowledged that he did run out of gas in the latter rounds. But it’s something that will only make him better the next time he returns to the Octagon.

“I’m going to work on it,” he said of his conditioning. “You live and you learn. It’s always good to learn lessons, especially when you win and learn a lesson. Next time, I’ll be a lot more judicious with my takedowns and the pace. Next time we get a tall guy like that, I didn’t really get to bring in anyone who was like him. I wasn’t really used to the dimensions, and it presented problems when I was in the guard. It presented some problems that we weren’t really ready for it, but we made it.”

Blaydes is on a four-fight winning streak and has won eight of his last nine outings.
