November is a month without any title fights, which makes it a good time to take a long view of the future title picture in each weight class. Today we look at the bantamweight division.
The decision to fold World Extreme Cagefighting into the UFC will have a big impact on the smallest fighters, and the talent-rich 135-pound division might soon be considered one of the deepest in the UFC. Our look at the state of the UFC bantamweights is below.

Seven years ago when Urijah Faber was just beginning his professional MMA career, he wrote out a set of goals. One of his chief objectives was to become a champion in the UFC or PRIDE. The latter organization never had a championship in his favored division when he fought as a featherweight, and he ran into the same problem when it came to the UFC.
Faber, it seemed, was too small to be a major champion. Only he found a way to buck the system, helping to build the WEC’s featherweight belt into a prestigious piece of hardware and the promotion into a player. So while Faber was never quite able to cross off that line on his to-do list, he was going to have to live with “close enough.”
Now though, his dream might become a reality. With the UFC-WEC merger, the “California Kid” is free to chase a a goal he had nearly resigned himself from ever getting: the UFC championship.

Over a year ago, I sat in a Dallas hotel lobby with Ben Henderson telling me of his goal to be considered the best pound-for-pound mixed martial artist on the planet. He is a polite, well-spoken young man, and he said this in the most humble way you could imagine.
I smiled at his ambition but I also quietly wondered to myself, How would this talented young athlete accomplish such a goal in the WEC when everybody knew it was, well, not the UFC. Henderson went on to capture the WEC lightweight championship but he’s made barely a dent in the lightweight world top 10.
Henderson’s not the only guy to have big dreams in a small company. The same can be said for Jose Aldo, Urijah Faber, Dominick Cruz and more. But with the news of the the UFC-WEC merger, opportunity abounds for everyone.
A simple change of three letters and a logo will tilt the MMA landscape further in Zuffa’s favor and change the fortunes of lower weight-class fighters across the world.

It’s about time. After years of operating the WEC as a little brother organization to the UFC, Zuffa has finally decided to do the sensible thing and bring all its fighters under one roof. It was a long wait, but at least it’s over.
The way UFC president Dana White tells it, this was all about timing. It was the perfect plan and now is the perfect time to implement it. Then again, White’s never been afraid to indulge in a little revisionist history when it suits him, so take that explanation with a grain of salt.
The truth is, the WEC has long suffered from the same branding problem that every other competing MMA organization has faced. To many casual fans, the UFC is MMA. That’s great for the industry leader, but not so great for little brother. That’s why, as exciting as the WEC fights have been, ratings have lagged.
