Henry Cejudo wants all the gold. Even in the UFC’s women’s division. Over the weekend, there was a lot of talk about the dominance of UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko.

“The Bullet” successfully defended her title against Liz Carmouche in the main event of UFC Uruguay on Saturday, taking home a lopsided unanimous decision win. After hearing about all the praise Shevchenko has been receiving, bantamweight and flyweight champion Cejudo decided to chime in.

“So I’m out here enjoying my beautiful Sunday here in beautiful Las Vegas,” Cejudo said. “But my phone just keeps blowing up, that somebody by the name of Valentina “The Bullet” Shevchenko is the most dominant champion in the world. And guess what? I get a little jelly.

“Because she has gold and I want that gold. Valentina Shevchenko, I have a message for you. I’m looking to become the first intergender world champion this world has ever seen. I’m calling you out. You can be the next to bend the knee to “Triple C.””

Valentina Shevchenko got the job done against Liz Carmouche, but the performance certainly wasn’t as well-received as her last outing.

Shevchenko comfortably outpointed Carmouche in the UFC Uruguay headliner last night to retain her women’s flyweight title. However, it was a dull affair with fans booing at various moments during the fight.

To that, “Bullet” suggested fans having a fresh memory of her headkick knockout of Jessica Eye at UFC 238. And so, it was always going to be hard to top that:

“They still have a fresh memory about the knockout [against Jessica Eye] two months ago,” Shevchenko said at the post-fight press conference (via MMA Fighting). “They wanted to see the knockout but as I said inside the Octagon, sometimes you do the knockout, sometimes you don’t. It’s not the way to be upset or whatever.

“I think if all fans, people will start to watch more carefully the fight, they will see very beautiful technique and timing and speed and this is all about martial arts. Not only about crazy exchanges, you can be hit or you can lose much more because as I said, you have the belt or you don’t.”

Still, nobody likes to be booed. And while it affected Shevchenko, it didn’t cause her to fight differently with emotions as she ultimately got the job done:

“It’s affecting but at the same time you cannot listen too much,” Shevchenko added. “Because fighting opponent, for example like Liz, if you just go with a lot of emotion, she will catch you and put you down. You cannot do it. You have to be very smart fighter.

“Of course it’s affecting but at the same time what’s going to be better make fans feel good and lose your belt? Is it better?”

What do you make of Shevchenko’s comments?

Liz Carmouche was unable to capture the UFC women’s flyweight title from Valentina Shevchenko last night (Sat. August 10, 2019).

Carmouche main evented UFC Uruguay with “The Bullet” last night and put on a five rounder with the 125-pound title on the line. However, it was the Shevchenko show for 25 minutes as she took home a lopsided unanimous decision victory after a dominant performance.

The 35-year-old veteran, who competed in the first-ever women’s mixed martial arts (MMA) bout in UFC history, took to Instagram shortly after the defeat to issue a statement on her loss. As always, Carmouche took the loss with class and even congratulated Shevchenko on retaining her title.

Thank you to everyone that has helped me get here tonight. These people were a crucial part of this camp but there were so many more not pictured here. I can’t say thank you enough to @10thplanetoceanside@10thplanetsandiego@deependfitness@thearenagym@pso_rite@doc_william_kessler and so many more for helping me. I’m sorry I couldn’t bring home the win tonight. Congratulations to @bulletvalentina on your title retention”

It will be interesting to see what’s next for Carmouche after her defeat to Shevchenko. The 125-pound division is rather thin, so it’s not impossible to assume she could earn another title opportunity soon.
