The UFC has revealed the main events for two upcoming cards which were announced earlier today.

UFC President Dana White announced UFC 249 would take place at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Florida. Two other fight night cards will also take place at the arena on May 13 and on May 16.

Light-heavyweight contender Anthony Smith will square off against Glover Teixeira in the main event on May 13. The pair were originally supposed to fight at UFC Lincoln tomorrow. The card was unfortunately cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but they will now be able to get it in just a few weeks’ time.

Smith will be looking to work his way back into title contention after falling short in his 205lb title fight against Jon Jones. Last time out he beat long-time contender Alexander Gustafsson and now has the chance to add another top fighter to his list. Despite being 40-years-old Teixeria is still a force to be reckoned with at light-heavyweight. He is riding a three-fight win streak and will be hoping to earn another title shot himself by taking out one of the divisions best.

Three days later MMA legend Alistair Overeem will headline in another rebooked main event against Walt Harris. The heavyweight duo was due to meet at UFC Portland on April 11. Now the fight will take place in Florida on May 16.

Overeem will be desperate to get back in the win column after falling at the last hurdle against Jairzinho Rozenstruik last time out. Harris is currently riding a two-fight win streak and will want to make it three in a row. He will be returning to the cage for the first time since the death of his stepdaughter Aniah Blanchard last year. (Per MMA Junkie)

Overeem Harris

Walt Harris is hoping to finally face Alistair Overeem on May 16.

The pair have been booked to face each other in a heavyweight bout three times so far only for it to be rescheduled on each occasion.

The latest instance was because UFC 249 — which was set to take place this past weekend — was indefinitely postponed. However, with the UFC’s plans to resume the fight schedule on May 9, Harris is hearing a possible date with Overeem could take place a week later.

“I’m hearing May 16 as a possible date that we could fight,” Harris told MMA Junkie. “He’s here [in the United States]. They have him quarantined right now. I’m hoping that it goes through. Every day is day-to-day. Some days, you never know. You could wake up and everything is going great. The next day, everything changes.

“We’ll see, man. I’m just trying to stay as ready as I possibly can during this time. Hopefully the fight will happen, man. It’ll be a great honor to get in there and fight Alistair.”

Harris originally pulled out from his UFC DC headliner with Overeem in December following the tragic death of his stepdaughter. The constant delays and rescheduling since haven’t helped matters.

However, “The Big Ticket” has become accustomed to all these adversities.

“It’s frustrating from a personal standpoint as far as a fight and my career, but it’s a part of life,” Harris said. “Like you alluded to, I’ve been through a lot of things in my life. It’s just part of it, man. I think God does things on his own terms, so I don’t get stressed out about things.

“I just try to do my best to stay ready and stay focused and be ready when my number is called. It’s part of the process and my journey to the UFC – ups and downs. It’s nothing new. I just stay focused and keep going.”

Do you think we’ll see Harris vs. Overeem on May 16?

After a terrible family tragedy last year, top-ranked UFC heavyweight Walt Harris is preparing to make his return to the Octagon.

Initially, Harris was scheduled to face Alistair Overeem at UFC DC in December, however, Harris was forced to withdraw after the disappearance of his stepdaughter, Aniah Blanchard. Blanchard had been reported as missing in October and her body was found over a month later, with Ibraheem Yazeed being arrested and charged with her murder. The case is ongoing.

Now after taking time to grieve with his family, Harris is ready to get back to work. MMA Junkie reports that Harris is looking to return to action in April, according to his manager Jason House of Iridium Sports. However, no official return date or opponent have been named. The 36-year-old has already gotten back into the training room, as he shared the following picture on his Instagram.

The process of serving justice for 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard, and her family, is underway.

Blanchard, the stepdaughter of UFC heavyweight Walt Harris, had her remains found in Macon County, Alabama by local authorities late last month. Now, Lee County District Attorney Brandon Hughes has announced that capital murder charges are being filed against 30-year-old suspect, Ibraheem Yazeed. Yazeed has been in custody since early November.

He was charged with first-degree kidnapping upon his arrest. Now, prosecutors in Alabama have announced it was determined, via an autopsy, that Blanchard was killed by a gunshot wound, and they are seeking the death penalty for Yazeed. Yazeed is the only person being charged with her murder.

“In the interests of public safety, I can say that the investigation has determined Ibraheem Yazeed to be the lone person responsible for Aniah’s abduction and her murder and he remains in the Lee County jail without bond,’’ Hughes said (H/T MMA Fighting). “Mr. Yazeed remains innocent of any charges against him until his guilt is proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

“From its first moments, law enforcement moved swiftly and methodically to find Aniah’s abductor, her murderer, and her. The process of seeing justice done on behalf of Aniah and her family will not be swift, but it will be thorough. It is my intention that the response to this horrific crime serve as a warning to anyone who believes they want to come to Lee County and engage in violent criminal behavior. You will be dealt with and the consequences will be severe.”

Blanchard Suspect Yazeed

A second suspect, Antwain Fisher, has been arrested for allegedly helping Yazeed dispose of evidence in the murder. David Johnson Jr., a third suspect, was also arrested and charged with hindering prosecution. At the time of the crime, Yazeed was out on bond for separate charges, which include kidnapping and attempted murder. He remains in custody in Alabama after being denied bond.

We here at LowKickMMA offer our condolences to Blanchard’s family and pray justice is ultimately served.
