At Thursday night’s WEC 53, lightweight champion Ben Henderson and challenger Anthony Pettis will have the enviable task of closing out the lights on the WEC, a promotion that never seemed to fail to deliver high-octane fights filled with skill, heart, and most importantly to many fans, finishes.
Fittingly, a tangle between the duo promises at best, a fight with a conclusive finish, and at worst, an exciting scrap between two men fighting for a chance to be the final WEC lightweight champion as well as the next UFC championship contender.
For a WEC fight, the stakes have never been higher.

After nine-and-a-half years of thrilling events, Wold Extreme Cagefighting will take its final bow tonight at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. But even aside from the historical significance, there will be a lot on the line at WEC 53. In the main event, Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis battle to become the UFC’s #1 lightweight contender. Dominick Cruz and Scott Jorgensen meet to determine the UFC’s first-ever 135-pound champion. And a host of top 155’ers like Donald Cerrone, Chris Horodecki, Kamal Shalorus, Zhang Tie Quan and Jamie Varner will be fighting to keep their jobs in an unforgiving post-UFC-merger market.
CagePotato.com will be liveblogging the Versus broadcast beginning at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT. Come back for all the live results, and to share your fond memories of one of the greatest MMA promotions to ever do it. WEC 53’s full lineup is after the jump…

GLENDALE, Ariz. — When listening to Scott Jorgensen describe his plan for dealing with WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz‘s unique fighting style, it’s important to remind yourself not to cringe outwardly. At least not in front of the guy. That would be rude, and possibly hazardous to your health.
To hear Jorgensen tell it, he hasn’t watched tape on Cruz, and hasn’t constructed much in the way of a game plan for their title fight at WEC 53. In fact, he hasn’t spent a lot of time thinking about the champ at all. What’s more, he doesn’t seem to think this is as horrible an idea as it might sound like to most people.
“As far as stylistic match-up and nightmares, what have I done to my last five opponents?” said Jorgensen. “Name one other fighter that fights like I do in the WEC. There’s not many. I’m big, I’m strong, I bully people. I’m not afraid to get hit and I’m always coming forward. Everybody’s so worried about Dominick’s style, but nobody’s looked at what I do. There’s one thing I guarantee: you can’t slow me down and you’re not going to bully me. That goes a long way in a fight.”

Canadian lightweight Chris Horodecki is set to take a step up in competition this Thursday when he faces three-time WEC title challenger Donald Cerrone at WEC 53 in Glendale, Ariz.
For the 23-year-old out of London, Ontario, a win over Cerrone would almost certainly guarantee himself a UFC roster spot alongside close friends, training and business partners Mark Hominick and Sam Stout.
In an exclusive interview below, Horodecki talks about fighting Cerrone on the last-ever WEC card, “fighter years,” the UFC’s announcement to run a show in Toronto and much more.
GLENDALE, Ariz. – As of today, the WEC is still their home. By Friday morning, it will just be a memory.
The WEC fighters and staff, they know this. At least, they know it in a hypothetical sense, the way you know that nothing lasts forever. But when the final fight is over at WEC 53 and the little blue cage is taken apart and packed away for the last time, that’s when it’s going to get real.
Even with as much as they’ve thought about this day over the past couple months, nobody can be sure exactly how that moment will feel when it arrives.
“I think it’s going to be kind of bittersweet,” said WEC lightweight champion Ben Henderson. “It’s already bittersweet to me now. I try not to think about it too much, but it’s already pretty bittersweet to me. It’s been great. It’s been a great ride.”
