A very interesting superfight could be brewing in the women’s divisions of the UFC.

UFC women’s flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko has dominated at 125 pounds. If newly-crowned 115-pound champion Weili Zhang can muster up a dominant streak similar to that of Shevchenko, the UFC’s first-ever Chinese champion has expressed interest in jumping up to flyweight to challenge “The Bullet.”

However, according to Shevchenko, Zhang has a lot of work to do before she can make the jump up to her weight division and challenge for her crown. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“A few months ago nobody knew the name of the Chinese girl Weili,” Shevchenko said. “I don’t know what number she was but because of lucky circumstances she became champion but she still has to prove that she is in the right place and she’s there because no one is better than her.

“Because my opinion, she still has Joanna, she’s a very hard test for her. She has Rose [Namajunas] and she’s also a very hard test for her and she has Tatiana Suarez. So before she proves that she’s better than them, I think it’s not right to jump over the stairs. It’s not right.”

Both Shevchenko and Zhang have title defenses to prepare for at the moment. Shevchenko puts her title up for grabs against Katlyn Chookagian in the co-main event of UFC 247 next week. The pay-per-view (PPV) goes down from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas.

As for Zhang, she’ll put her strap up for grabs against former division queen Joanna Jedrzejczyk in the UFC 248 PPV co-main event. That show goes down in March. If Zhang can get a dominant win over Jedrzejczyk next month, it’ll be a good way to spark interest in an eventual superfight with Shevchenko.

“She has a lot of things to prove yet,” Shevchenko said. “I’m really open but I would say I would accept it with someone who will show that they are there [at the top].”

Joanna Jedrzejczyk has apologized to Weili Zhang for her coronavirus joke.

Jedrzejczyk is set to challenge Zhang for her women’s strawweight title in the co-main event of UFC 248 on March 7 in Las Vegas. Amid the recent coronavirus outbreak that originated in China, Jedrzejczyk recently reposted a meme that had her wearing a gas mask next to Zhang.

Zhang did not take kindly to it, however. She questioned the former champion’s character and wished her good health until they meet.

“To make fun of tragedy is a true sign of ones character. People are dying, someones father, someones mother, someones child. Say what you want about me if it makes you feel stronger but do not joke about what’s happening here. I wish you good health until March 7th. I will see you soon.”

Jedrzejczyk has now responded in her Instagram story by apologizing to Zhang but maintaining she was laughing at the meme, not the situation in China.

However, she also promised to see Zhang at UFC 248 and advised her not to get emotional.

“Hey champ. Hey Weili,” she said (via MMA Junkie). “I’m so sorry to make you feel bad, but I’d never make fun of sick people or a virus. I didn’t want you to get offended.

“I just made fun of the funny internet meme. So, so sorry, but still, I’ll see you March 7. Don’t get emotional, OK?”

Zhang has not responded to her apology but one thing is for sure — this title fight got a little more heated.

The recent coronavirus outbreak in China won’t be affecting fighters like women’s strawweight champion Weili Zhang — at least, for now.

The coronavirus has been spreading all over Chinese cities with only one province reportedly not affected by it as of yet. A number of cities have since been quarantined and on lockdown to prevent any further spread.

According to MMA Fighting, Beijing hasn’t had a case of the coronavirus yet, which is a positive thing as Zhang as well as other Chinese fighters like Jingliang Li and Xiaonan Yan all train in the capital.

Zhang is set to defend her title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk at UFC 248 on March 7 in Las Vegas and her manager Brian Butler doesn’t anticipate any problems before they head to the United States:

“Weili and her camp have not been affected at all and have always kept a pretty tight circle,” Butler told MMA Fighting. “She is having the best camp of her career so far.”

Li is also competing at UFC 248 against Neil Magny while Yan meets Karolina Kowalkiewicz at UFC Auckland on February 22. Ruy Menezes trains the duo at China Top Team in Beijing and as it stands, the plan is to head to Auckland and then go directly to Las Vegas.

“We’ll travel earlier to New Zealand if (the virus) comes to Beijing, but I don’t think that will be necessary,” Menezes said. “We’ll only do it if the worst happens, and I don’t even know if New Zealand would let people from China in if that was the case. But I don’t think that will happen because the Chinese government already has the cities that are dealing with this problem on lockdown.

“I’m going to the gym in the morning and then going back home. Life goes on, but we’re being careful. I’ve warned my jiu-jitsu students that if anyone is coughing or experiencing fever, cold or headache, don’t come to the gym when I reopen it, because I won’t let them in.”

Hopefully, there are no issues leading up to those fights.
