Joanna Jedrzejczyk is remaining at 115-pounds and claims her next fight will be a shot at Weili Zhang’s title.

Jedrzejczyk enjoyed a successful return to action as he dominantly outpointed Michelle Waterson over five rounds in the UFC Tampa headliner this past weekend.

It was her first outing since losing a five-rounder to Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant flyweight title in December last year. And despite an earlier scare with the weight cut, Jedrzejczyk intends on continuing at strawweight and reclaiming her title.

“Yes sir, it was beautiful,” she said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday. “It was easy to make the weight. It’s my life goal to become the strawweight champion.

“Before the fight with Michelle Waterson, my big goal was becoming a challenger but now I know I will get the title shot and I will become the champ one more time in my life.”

The Polish star is not just hoping to get a title shot — she claims it is confirmed now as she wouldn’t have signed the dotted line for the Waterson fight if it wasn’t the case:

“I would not sign the agreement before this fight with Michelle Waterson if I was not going to fight for the belt after the victory,” she added. “Done deal. I don’t need anybody, they need me more. Of course [I’m the face of the weight class.]”

So with a fight with Zhang on the horizon, what does the former champion make of “Magnum”?

“I’m impressed,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She made it to the league. She’s very fast, her punches are very crispy, juicy. She’s very dangerous. She proved that in the title fight with Jessica Andrade. But I’m ready.”

Are you excited to see Zhang vs. Jedrzejczyk?

Joanna Jedrzejczyk has seen Weili Zhang’s rise in the UFC women’s strawweight division, and the former division queen is impressed. Jedrzejczyk is set to make her return to the Octagon at 115 pounds this weekend. She’ll headline UFC Tampa against Michelle Waterson.

Speaking at this week’s media day to MMA Junkie, Jedrzejczyk offered some brief thoughts on the new champion, Zhang, and her rise to the top. Jedrzejczyk noted she predicted the Chinese champion would beat Andrade in the first round.

“Yes, I’m very impressed with the new strawweight champ, and I said that she was going to win in the first round with Jessica Andrade,” Jedrzejczyk said. “She’s a very good fighter and in the UFC, maybe the strawweight division is the lightest division in the UFC, but definitely this division gets lots of attention and brings lots of fireworks with every fight.”

Currently, it is being speculated that Jedrzejczyk is expected to miss weight for her fight this weekend. If that is to be the case, there’s also more speculation about whether or not Waterson will accept a late-notice opponent. There have been rumblings of moving “The Karate Hottie” to a November card if Jedrzejczyk does, in fact, miss weight.

However, if Jedrzejczyk is able to make the weight and defeat Waterson, she has been promised a shot at the 115-pound title.

Joanna Jedrzejczyk is ready to return to the Octagon at UFC Tampa next month (Sat. October 12, 2019) against Michelle Waterson.

With a victory, Jedrzejczyk and her team claim she has been promised a title opportunity. That means a matchup against newly-crowned champion Weili Zhang, who took out Jessica Andrade swiftly to win the title. Speaking on the Eurobash podcast (H/T MMA Fighting), Jedrzejczyk revealed she had actually been offered a fight with Zhang three times before.

“She’s good, but the truth is they offered me Weili Zhang three times before that fight and the thing is, she needed me. Okay, she’s the champ now so it might look like she never needed me to become someone. Sometimes people are like, ‘Do you know who she is now?’ Of course I know who she is, but I fight in the Octagon, you know? I’m a professional athlete, I’m a businesswoman and I know who I am.

“I don’t do fights on Twitter. If [others fighters] call me out, I like it because I know I am in a strong position. Why are they calling me out? Because they know I can bring them to a different level. Maybe they can be lucky and win against former UFC champion, a dominant champion, which I was. [That would allow them to] get better money, get better exposure. Of course, they offered me Weili Zhang, but my goal was to fight for the belt. I took my spot, now I’m fighting Waterson and then I will go for the belt.

“Slowly, step-by-step, I will reach my goals and my dreams,” Jedrzejczyk said. “The thing is, there is a new UFC Performance Institute in China, so they probably needed a good fight and they just gave the title fight to this Chinese chick. She won, good for her; I’m very happy for her. I think she’s very strong, she’s very dynamic and she’s a good puncher. I hope she’s going to be a good champ for the UFC and the division before I face her.”

Jedrzejczyk has dropped three of her last four fights inside the UFC’s Octagon. In her last outing, Jedrzejczyk was bested by former Muay Thai foe Valentina Shevchenko for the vacant UFC women’s flyweight championship. Now, she drops back down to 115 pounds, where she’ll take on Waterson, hoping to solidify herself as the next challenger for the title.
