After the cancellation of their July 17 bout, the UFC has a new date in mind for the Max Holloway vs. Yair Rodríguez pairing.

Per Aaron Bronsteter of TSN Sports, Dana White has disclosed that the UFC is targeting November 13 as the new date for Holloway and Rodríguez to take place as the headliner a Fight Night event. The report also states that the UFC is hopeful that this card will air on ABC. There is currently no venue or location established as of yet.

Both ranked inside the top 5 of the featherweight division, the winner of this bout could potentially go on to fight for the UFC featherweight title next against the winner of UFC 266’s Alex Volkanovski vs. Brian Ortega fight.

Holloway (22-6) was last seen in action against Calvin Kattar back in January, where he put on one of the best performances of his entire professional MMA career to earn a very lopsided unanimous decision win. Holloway dominated from start to finish, with a heavy-volume attack as he landed a record 445 significant strikes on Kattar.

Seen as one of the greatest featherweight champions of all time, Holloway became champion in 2017 when he defeated the legendary José Aldo and went on to defend it against Aldo again as well as against Brian Ortega and Frankie Edgar.

Holloway lost his belt against the current UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski at UFC 245 in 2019 and will be eager to get a chance to fight for a third trilogy bout to regain the featherweight belt.

Yair Rodríguez

This will be Rodríguez’s highest-profile fight to date against a former champion in Holloway. The last time he fought a former champion in facing Frankie Edgar in 2017, the Mexican fell short when Edgar dominated him back in 2017 at UFC 211, which remains Rodríguez’s only loss in the UFC.

Since joining the UFC back in 2014, the 28-year-old Rodríguez has surged up the featherweight ranks with victories over the likes of Dan Hooker; Andre Fili; BJ Penn; and most recently, Jeremy Stephens in 2019.

Who do you see winning this exciting featherweight matchup between Max Holloway and Yair Rodríguez?

Giga Chikadze is rising in a hurry in the UFC’s featherweight division after his TKO win via liver kick over Cub Swanson at UFC Vegas 25.

After calling out Max Holloway during his post-fight interview, Chikadze now says he’s open to a fight with Yair Rodriguez if his initial wishes don’t materialize.

“I think that will be a real ninja fight,” Chikadze said during his post-fight presser when asked about Rodriguez as a potential opponent. “I would love this fight, and plus, he’s been pulling out of fights for the last few times, and I’m not that dangerous.”

After an impressive win over Swanson this past Saturday, it’s no surprise that the talented Georgian wants a bigger challenge right away if he wants to eventually compete for the featherweight belt. Rodriguez is currently not scheduled to fight in the UFC’s upcoming events, but that could change after Chikadze’s mentioning of him. Rodriguez is currently serving a six-month USADA suspension due to a whereabouts violation.

Chikadze and Rodriguez also share a lot of similarities from a style perspective. Both featherweights are heavily combative on the feet, particularly with body kicks and low kicks. There’s no question that this would be a fan-friendly bout to watch; whether it’s on a UFC Fight Night card or on an upcoming pay-per-view.

Rodriguez hasn’t competed since his unanimous decision win over Jeremy Stephens at UFC on ESPN 6 in Boston. He was rumored on multiple occasions to compete against Zabit Magomedsharipov for his next fight, but the scheduled bout was cancelled on multiple occasions in 2020.

Chikadze has also entertained future bouts with Calvin Kattar and Alexander Volkanovski, to name a few. First, he’ll need at least another win over a top contender like Rodriguez to emerge in the featherweight title picture.

Chikadze has won six straight to begin his UFC career after first emerging from Dana White‘s Contender Series in 2018. Regardless of who Chikadze’s next opponent will be, it’s sure to be another barn burner for fans to be excited about.

What are your thoughts on Giga Chikadze’s recent win over Cub Swanson and a potential matchup with Yair Rodriguez?

Tonight, Yair Rodriguez will return after a two-year layoff when he faces Max “Blessed” Holloway in the UFC Vegas 42 main event. However, it is well known that he was scheduled to face Zabit Magomedsharipov multiple times before landing this bout against Holloway. The fight has yet to come together, with Rodriguez being responsible for it falling through each time. Here’s a look at an article from earlier this year of Rodriguez responding to allegations of fight ducking.

[ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED APRIL 29, 2021, 8:01 AM]

Yair Rodriguez has grown tired of hearing about how much he is supposedly ducking Zabit Magomedsharipov.

Considered by many to be the Khabib vs. Ferguson of the UFC’s featherweight division, a fight between Yair Rodriguez and Zabit Magomedsharipov just doesn’t seem destined to happen. After multiple cancellations, even Dana White recently had to throw in the towel and give up on the prospect of these elite featherweights coming together in a dream matchup. What has not escaped the attention of MMA fans, though, is that each cancellation has come from the Rodriguez end.

In 2018, Yair Rodriguez reportedly rejected the Magomedsharipov fight and was ultimately released by the UFC in large part because of this rejection. After returning to the promotion, Rodriguez has been booked to fight Magomedsharipov on two other occasions, both of which were also canceled due to Rodriguez suffering an injury. Since returning to the promotion after his release, Rodriguez has gone 2-0, but the name of “Zabit Magomedsharipov” remains a glaring absence from his record.

Because of the fact that Rodriguez was once released in connection to declining a fight against Magomedsharipov plus the fact that he has now withdrawn from a booked fight against the Russian multiple times due to injury, “El Pantera” has been accused of outright ducking Magomedsharipov in a narrative that has now persisted for years.

Speaking to ESPN in a recent interview, Yair Rodriguez explained the silliness of all those who believe this about him.

“It’s been over three years that it’s been the same story over and over and over and over again,” Rodriguez began. “It’s just hard to believe that some people will think that of professional athletes in general, that they think they’re ducking somebody. For what reason?

“Why would somebody duck anybody else? Who do you think he is or who does he think he is in order for me to duck him? Is he a kind of god or what? No, man, we are all competing here in the same weight class. It doesn’t matter, bro.”

Rodriguez then articulated, in no uncertain terms, where he stands on the issue of fighting Zabit Magomedsharipov or anyone else on the UFC roster for that matter.

“I’m ready to fight him or I’m ready to fight anybody. I don’t care, bro,” Rodriguez assured. “I’m here to fight. I don’t know how to explain better than that. For people that think that I’m ducking him or whatever, that’s up to you, man, not up to me. I’m here. I had my contract signed every time that I was going to fight him. But things happen. What do you want me to do?”

Rodriguez stated that he would like to make his return in July. Meanwhile, not only is Zabit Magomedsharipov also not booked, but as of this writing, he has been mysteriously and suddenly removed from the official UFC rankings, so there may be a major story brewing in connection to this sudden development.

Keep it locked right here on MMANews.com for updates on when Yair Rodriguez will return to the Octagon and against who, as well as any updates on Zabit Magomedsharipov’s status.

UFC president Dana White spoke at the UFC Vegas 15: post-fight press conference sharing that he doesn’t believe top Featherweight contender Yair Rodriguez will be fighting anytime soon.

Rodriguez who was initially booked to face Zabit Magomedsharipov in August was forced to pull out of the bout due to injury. Since then, nothing has been announced regarding rescheduling the bout or who Rodriguez could potentially face next.

At the press conference when asked why nothing had been announced White shared few details.

“Have we not publicly talked about that?” White asked a member of his staff. “I don’t think he’s gonna fight soon.”

A member of the media asked White if it was due to injury to which he simply answered no. “We didn’t announce it, I don’t know why we didn’t but yeah, I don’t know what the deal is It’s actually none of my business what’s going on there but when it comes out it will come out,” White explained.

While he chose not to share any details when asked if this was due to Rodriguez declining a fight White quickly shared that this was not the case.

Rodriguez is coming off a victory against Jeremy Stephens in October of 2019. This fight was a rematch of a bout that had occurred the month prior initially ending in a no-contest due to an eye poke.

In the subsequent rematch, Rodriguez was able to take a unanimous decision victory after widely dominating the first two rounds of the three-round bout. Following this victory rumors began to circulate of the highly anticipated matchup against Magomedsharipov, however, ultimately this bout never came to fruition.

As Dana stated, there is currently no timeline of when we can expect to see Rodriguez return to  fight in the octagon.

When do you think we will see Rodriguez back next?
