Yoel Romero might be looking at his last shot at the middleweight title — and his weight is on point according to him.
Romero challenges Israel Adesanya for the middleweight title in the UFC 248 headliner this Saturday. “The Soldier of God” has a history of struggling to make the 185-pound limit, having missed weight in two of his last three title fights.
Although he came in at 184.5 pounds for his last fight with Paulo Costa, the weight will always be a worry for fans when it comes to Romero.
However, all is well as of today according to the Cuban. Speaking on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show, Romero revealed he currently weighs 198 pounds which he claims is very good at this point during fight week.
“198, muy bien,” Romero said (via MMA Mania). “Normally I am 202, depending. It is totally different now. Now I have time for training. That is the difference. I have a time for my training, in my camp.
“No excuses. It’s no problem for me when I have time for my training. I am not thinking about my weight for my fight. I am thinking about my training camp. Because you need to lose your weight in training camp.”
Losing 13 pounds in four days is certainly possible but not easy, either. Regardless, Romero claims everything is fine so maybe there’s no need to worry for now.

UFC
welterweight turned fight night commentator Dan Hardy believes Israel Adesanya
is just two or three fights away from reaching Anderson Silva status.
The Brit claims Adesnaya’s elite level striking and technical ability put him ahead of the chasing pack at 185lb and his dominance will come clear in his next few fights.
Speaking to Submission Radio ahead of the UFC 248 main event, Hardy backed Adesanya big time. The former welterweight title challenger believes the fight against Yoel Romero is stacked in ‘The Last Stylebenders’ favour and he is only a few fights from reaching the level of legendary middleweight Anderson Silva.
“I think it’s Adesanya’s fight to
lose. I mean, that doesn’t at all diminish the threat of Yoel Romero. There’s
always that, there’s always that intangible, that massive shot, that flying
knee, whatever it is. Well, that oblique kick that tears his knee apart.
There’s lots of other things that Romero can do in a split second. Even if he’s
lost the other 24 minutes of the fight, he can always change that around. I
think the odds are stacked in Adesanya’s favour because he’s the technician,
he’s a better technical fighter than Yoel Romero. Doesn’t necessarily have the
explosive capabilities of a Yoel Romero, but has got the endurance and enough
strength to make those shots count over time. Yeah, I feel like it’s Adesanya’s
fight to lose, but the threat of losing is a very real one.”
“There was a point where everyone
thought ‘this is the right person to beat Anderson Silva’. And it got to the
stage where every time he stepped into the octagon, it was just like, there’s
not even any point in this title defense because he’s gonna make it look too
easy. And I think Adesanya’s probably two or three fights away from that
status. But he’s well on his way.”
Will Israel Adesanya be able to emulate Anderson Silva’s success as champion?
Yoel Romero has revealed his plan to continue fighting for 10 more years. The 42-year-old middleweight contender aims to surpass boxing legend Bernard Hopkins who fought in fifties. The 42-year-old middleweight contender aims to surpass boxing legend Bernard Hopkins who fought in fifties. Multi-weight boxing champion Hopkins was still winning world championship fights at 49-years-old and fighting top tier opposition until he retired aged 51.
Whilst speaking with his friends on the UFC 248 Countdown show Romero discussed his goals for the future and spoke about exactly how long he will continue fighting, he said.
“You
know what my goal is? Surpassing Bernard Hopkins – the boxer. I think he
trained until age 51. That’s my goal, surpassing him.
“I
don’t feel tired. At this age, I’m still in shape. I fight against kids 25 and
27 years old and I make them sweat.”
Romero
is still very much at the top of his game and has no need to consider retirement.
Despite suffering back-to-back defeats, the 185lb title challenger has shown no
drop in performance levels
His losses
against Paulo Costa and before that in his rematch against Robert Whittaker are
controversial to say the least. Many people believe Romero despite his record
is the uncrowned middleweight king.
This
weekend he’ll get the chance to make it official when he takes on 30-year-old
champion Israel Adesanya at UFC 248 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’ll be the Cuban
Olympian’s second title shot after previously falling short against former
champion Robert Whittaker when they first met at UFC 213.
He’ll face a very tough test fighting Adesanya who is not only much younger but boasts size and reach advantages in the UFC 248 main event fight.
Adesanya is flying high after winning consecutive title bouts. First, he beat Kelvin Gastleum over five rounds to claim the interim belt. Next, he unified the middleweight division by stopping compatriot Whittaker inside two rounds last time out.
How long do you think Yoel Romero will continue fighting for?

Israel Adesanya is set to face Yoel Romero at UFC 248 on March 7. The New Zealander, however, is adamant he’ll seek a replacement opponent should Romero come in over the 185-pound middleweight limit.
The 42-year-old wrestler has twice missed weight in title fights and went on to give great performances. In February 2018, the Cuban missed weight for his UFC interim title fight against Luke Rockhold. He went on to score a brutal knockout win in that fight.
Next, he missed weight for his middleweight title shot, a rematch with former opponent Robert Whittaker. After five hard rounds the judges scored in favor of the Australian, but Romero dropped and hurt his man on several occasions. The decision is one that is still debated to this day.
Speaking to MMA Junkie, Adesanya said if Romero misses weight it’ll cost him big time. Either a big financial penalty, or he’ll be taken out of the fight altogether.
“If he
misses weight, all I know is I want 80 percent of his (expletive) check,”
Adesanya said at a press conference today in New Zealand. “That’s the only
thing that pisses me off, because then it wouldn’t be classified with a red
ruby on my belt if he doesn’t make weight, and that would really piss me off,
and I would probably give the shot to someone else who deserves it. I might ask
for the replacement.
“If he
doesn’t make weight, I might say, ‘Jared Cannonier, step in,’ or Darren Till –
if he can make it in – step in, because, yeah, (expletive) all that.”
“The Last Stylebender” seems to be building animosity for his rival as fight night draws closer. He believes Romero not making weight for his fight with Rockhold was a tactical move, one he isn’t willing to let happen when the pair meet on March 7.
“He’s a guy
that’s disrespected the sport,” Adesanya said. “When he fought, his last win
was at 221. … Dude, this is chess, not checkers. … He had two hours to try and
make weight. He decided not to make the weight, and you know why? He decided,
‘I’ll take the fine … but I won’t dehydrate myself to the point where I won’t
be able to fight, and that way he gets to go out there, knock out Rockhold,
then still gets to go and fight for the (expletive) belt. For me, he better
make weight because I’m coming ready, man. Seriously.”
Who should serve as a back-up for Israel Adesanya vs. Yoel Romero?
