It looks like we finally have a date and location for Israel Adesanya’s first title defense.

Adesanya was initially expected to defend his UFC middleweight title against Paulo Costa. However, it was later revealed that “The Eraser” would be on the sidelines after undergoing bicep surgery.

As a result, Yoel Romero emerged as the next title contender. Although he is on a two-fight losing streak, those losses were extremely close and given the fact that Adesanya himself wanted Romero, it’s a fight that UFC president Dana White seemed very much open to.

The only problem was there had been no updates for a while or any hinted announcements. That is, until now, as Adesanya provided an update on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday:

“The fight’s done. … Make no mistake — I’m still putting work in,” Adesanya said. “I’m still getting ready for my second title defense against a veteran of the game. A veteran in wrestling, a tough motherf*cker, the boogeyman of the division. The guy nobody calls out — except for ‘Stylebender.’”

When Helwani asked if it would take place on March 7 which is the date for UFC 248, Adesanya — seemingly inadvertently — confirmed as such:

“Yep, that’s the one,” he added. “That’s me.”

If that is the case, it looks like UFC 248 will have two title fights as Weili Zhang is set to defend her women’s strawweight title against Joanna Jedrzejczyk on the card.

UFC middleweight contender Paulo Costa is hoping Israel Adesanya waits for him instead of fighting someone else.

Adesanya was slated to defend his middleweight title against Costa. However, “The Eraser” is on the sidelines after undergoing bicep surgery. As a result, Yoel Romero has emerged as a potential title challenger for Adesanya.

Costa — who has long spoken of Adesanya’s flaws — believes there would be only one winner if “The Last Stylebender” faced powerful middleweights such as himself and Romero:

“What I really think, a lot of people may not agree, but I see a lot of holes, weaknesses in Adesanya. Mostly physical, he should be in the low, middle-to-middle category,” Costa told Combate (via BJ Penn). “To fight me, Romero, he’s going to be hit hard. And, I don’t think he has the strength to absorb it. I respect everyone who thinks he is very good. I think he has quality, but does not survive Romero.”

Romero is notably on a two-fight losing streak, the latest of which includes a close unanimous decision defeat to Costa. However, the Brazilian can understand why Romero may get the next shot:

“I think Adesanya should not fight, should wait for me to do this fight, because Romero comes from defeat, not cool,” he added. “On the other hand, there is no one in the division to fight him.”

Should things go as planned, however, Costa hopes to be the one to inflict Adesanya’s first professional defeat. The two have gone back-and-forth on social media for a while and confronted each other from afar at UFC 243 with Adesanya showing Costa the middle finger:

“When he pointed the finger, it was a huge lack of respect,” Costa explained. “I wanted to go get satisfaction, charge him, hit him inside, give a lot of f*cking, but there was no way. There were a lot of people, everyone in front of me before this happened, thought something like this would happen.

“I would have to jump, pass through a lot of security, I had no way. I would like to go up there not only for being there. … Anyone who shows the finger to me, I will have the same reaction, charge the person.”

UFC President Dana White has confirmed the promotion hope to match middleweight champion Israel Adesanya and Yoel Romero. Speaking to ESPN he said it was a fight ‘The Last Stylebender’ had specifically asked for.

“We’re looking at Yoel Romero. (Adesanya) wants that fight. He wants to fight Yoel Romero. Nobody wants to fight Yoel Romero. Nobody’s screaming, ‘I want to fight Yoel Romero.’ He is.” (Transcribed by BJPENN.com)

Fighter of the year contender
Adesanya has enjoyed a perfect 2019. He begun the year by beating his hero
Anderson Silva. Next came a career defining fight with Kelvin Gastelum. The
30-year-old New Zealander emerged victorious from the epic back-and-forth
battle. He then made quick work of long time 185lb king, Robert Whittaker.
Since then he has consistently said he wants to fight the biggest and best
fighter. So, naturally he aims to take out ‘The Soldier of God’.

At 42-years-old many believed
Romero’s chance at a third title shot was gone when he lost to Paulo Costa. The
pair shared a wild three rounds earlier this year and Romero was on the wrong
side of the decision. That loss made it two in a row after he failed in his
second title bid against Robert Whittaker in 2018. Many believe he won at least
one maybe both of those fights. So, despite being on a losing streak, it’s good
to see him get another shot.

This fight has been speculated for a while now and many believe it will take place at UFC 248, on March 7 in Las Vegas, Nevada. However White wasn’t quite ready to reveal that information when asked by Brett Okamoto. “Yeah (we have a date), but we’re not announcing it yet.”

Darren Till has cleared up the situation around a potential fight with Yoel Romero.

The middleweight said post fight at UFC 244 he wouldn’t fight the Cuban as he is too scary. Later he called out Romero on social media but later claimed he was drunk when doing so.

Now he has went on record to categorically state he is not scared of Yoel Romero. He told BT Sports how it was all just a joke, despite some people not getting it. (H/T BT Sports)

“I’m not scared of Yoel. It’s just, don’t take life too seriously. I understand, I realize and I recognize what Yoel is as a fighter, as a human. He walks in here, he’s a specimen. It’s just jokes, mate. People shouldn’t take it too seriously,” he added. “I’ve seen actually a few people take it seriously and I’m like come on, mate. Have a day off from yourself.’ Whether you think Yoel would beast me around or not is totally irrelevant. This is all down to the fact that me saying I was scared of Yoel. And then people are like ‘wow, he’s actually said that. After giving a great interview, he’s just said that. Two, three, four days later, he calls him out and then he regrets calling him out. Then he posts the gorilla running away. It’s all fun and games, mate, really.”

Whether he’s scared or not a fight with the former Olympian seems unlikely – in the near future anyway.

Despite losing his last fight Romero appears to be next in line for a shot at middleweight champion Israel Adesanya.

Meanwhile Till will likely meet former champion Robert Whittaker when the UFC returns to London in March 2020.
