Yoel Romero is the next likely challenger for Israel Adesanya and the UFC middleweight championship.

Initially, the UFC was planning on having Adesanya make his first title defense against rival Paulo Costa. However, Costa suffered an injury and won’t be able to return until the second quarter of 2020. Now, Romero, who comes off of a loss to Costa, has called for his shot, and Adesanya is interested.

UFC president Dana White has since admitted he’s working on making the fight happen. Speaking on “The Ariel Helwani MMA Show,” Romero offered his thoughts on possibly fighting Adesanya.

Romero said the MMA community knows some of his decision losses as of late have been bogus, and people want to see him fight Adesanya to determine who the true champion at 185 pounds is. (H/T MMA Fighting)

“I’m staying ready for the fight because I’m still hungry,” Romero said. “I want this fight to happen because many people talk, ‘Who is the true [champion]? Who is the real champion of middleweight?’

“And the people know who it is because everybody has seen what happened the last three fights before. Now Israel has the belt, the people want to see who is the real champion.”

Romero’s only losses in the UFC have come via decision to Robert Whittaker (twice) and Paulo Costa. In each fight, many make the argument that Romero was robbed on the judges’ scorecards. Romero sympathizes with this argument.

“The people see that I am losing three fight. Yes, I’m losing three fight,” Romero said. “But when you ask them, inside their soul, ‘Did Yoel Romero lose?’ Yoel Romero did not lose. Yoel Romero is still the winner. Now you see what happened, the people want to see the really best people fight. Who is the best middleweight right now? I fight everybody, the best people in my division, the best fighters, and beat them. I not lose.

“I beat everyone. I feel like the day when I lose, I’m ready for the day when I lose because everybody have the beginning and everybody have the end of their career. But it’s not my day. I’m still training, I’m still hungry. The day when it comes and I lose I say, ‘Okay, today I lose it because it is what it is.’ I stay in the sport for a long time. I know the code for the sport, the real sport. I am the real sportsman.

“The day when I lose, I say I lose. The day when I lose in the Olympic game, I lose. Everybody ask me, ‘You’re a loser?’ Yes, I lose it. Somebody beat me. But right now, nobody beat me in the UFC. Maybe three people. The last fight, no Paulo Costa. Maybe three people. [Referring to the judges]. Everybody knows what I’m talking about.”

What do you think about Romero’s comments regarding a possible fight against Adesanya? Who are you picking to win?

Only UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has been open to calling out Yoel Romero – until Darren Till decided to do so on social media. Shortly after winning his middleweight debut against Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244, Till called Romero out on Instagram.

However, he later walked the callout back, deleting the post, and posting a hilarious meme saying, “When you wake up, and realize you called out Yoel Romero.” Speaking to MMA UK recently, Till admits that he was “blind drunk” when he made the callout, not realizing he had done so until his girlfriend told him the next morning. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“I was blind drunk. Blind drunk. Yes, so my friend opened up a great bar in Liverpool, we got invited to the open and I was celebrating the win. I was with the guys and I said, I had a few beers and said watch this,” Till said.

“So, I went onto google, I’ll get an image of Yoel, cause he is a scary dude, I said I’ll post that. He was like really bro? I said why not let’s start a little controversy. So, I tagged him let’s go and it just blew up. I remember the next morning I woke up and my girl was sat on the couch, because I slept on the couch, and she was like you called Yoel out.

“So, I went onto google and got the monkey eyes and told my guy to add when you wake up and realize you called out Yoel. Everyone knows when I’m going on a tirade on Twitter it is because I’m having a drink. It is never normal. I’m having fun.”

Now, Till seems to be focused on a London date with former middleweight champion Robert Whittaker. Both men have verbally agreed to fight each other next, With a win over Whittaker, Till could very well solidify himself as the next challenger for the 185-pound title.

What do you think about a fight between Till and Romero? Will they ever meet?

It looks like Israel Adesanya vs. Yoel Romero could very well be the next UFC middleweight title fight to take place. Adesanya, who comes off of an undisputed 185-pound title victory, was initially believed to be facing Paulo Costa in the first quarter of 2020 for his first title defense.

However, after Costa suffered an injury that required surgical repair, Adesanya is on the hunt for a new opponent. “Stylebender” has called out Romero to be that opponent. The Nigerian-born champ doesn’t care that Romero is coming off of a loss either.

“I said I want Yoel. F*ck records, it’s a great fight. I want to beat all the greatest of this era. I’ve taken (Robert) Whittaker, I’ve taken (Kelvin) Gastelum, I’ve taken (Anderson) Silva,” Adesanya said.

According to a report from Yahoo! Sports, UFC president Dana White is “going to work” on making Adesanya vs. Romero. Here’s what White had to say about the matchup. (H/T Jed I. Goodman on Twitter)

“He wants Romero and I respect that.”

Many have argued that Romero brings a style that would likely best Adesanya’s phenomenal striking pedigree. There’s only one way to find out, and it looks like White is going to make it happen.

Do you think Adesanya vs. Romero is the fight to make at the moment?

UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has doubled down on his desire to fight Yoel Romero. Adesanya comes off a middleweight unification title victory against Robert Whittaker last month.

With his first official title defense on the horizon, Adesanya has said he wants it to be against the Cuban powerhouse. However, Romero recently claimed that Adesanya is backing out of that fight behind the scenes.

Speaking to TMZ, Adesanya refuted that claim. “Stylebender” also addressed critics who say Romero doesn’t deserve a title opportunity coming off a loss, saying, he doesn’t care about records, and wants to fight the man that people say can beat him inside the Octagon. (H/T BJPenn.com)

“Man, I already called the guy out. They all say (I backed out). I already said it on JRE (Joe Rogan Experience). I’ve never ever backed out from anyone, I’ve never backed down, I never will,” Adesanya said.

“He’s f*cking getting told by his manager (that I won’t fight him). Yeah, I’ve called the guy out, I’ve said I want to fight him. The UFC don’t think that’s going to sell, but f*ck records, I just want to fight. I want Yoel, but if we can’t make that happen we have some ideas.”

Adesanya wants to beat all the greats of his era. He’s already stepped into the cage with Anderson Silva, Kelvin Gastelum, Robert Whittaker, and more. Now, he wants to add “The Soldier Of God” to that list.

“I said I want Yoel. F*ck records, it’s a great fight. I want to beat all the greatest of this era. I’ve taken (Robert) Whittaker, I’ve taken (Kelvin) Gastelum, I’ve taken (Anderson) Silva,” Adesanya said.

What do you think about Adesanya wanting to fight Romero next?
