Math must work differently in England, what with the metric system and everything. Otherwise, we can’t see exactly how Michael Bisping – who is 2-2 during the last 15 months – could possibly judge himself worthy of a middleweight title shot with a win over Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120 tonight. Conventional wisdom says a victory against the underwhelming Japanese “sensation” who himself is lucky just to be 1-1 in the Octagon could certainly put Bisping in line to fight somebody like Nate Marquardt or Demian Maia, but Anderson Silva? Seems like he’s got more than enough on his plate right now. Not surprisingly however, “The Count” sees himself at the front of the line.

Regardless of its main event status, the middleweight fight between Michael Bisping and Yoshihiro Akiyama that will close out UFC 120 is not a match with major title implications, a rarity for headline bouts in the promotion.

Bisping, after all, is just 2-2 in his last four fights while Akiyama is just 1-1 since beginning his career in the octagon. Instead, it’s simply a respectable matchup of high-caliber fighters, one of whom is extremely popular in the area hosting the event, another extremely popular in the area in which the promoter would like to be hosting future events.

That aside, however, it is also happens to be extremely competitive matchmaking. An inside look at the stats shows just how similar they’ve performed in recent bouts.

Looking down the card of UFC 120, you can’t help but notice the large contingent of fighters whose Octagon careers are hinging on their performances on Saturday.

By our calculations, there are no less than eight fighters who really need a win in London this weekend.

The fighters in question are listed after the jump.

All 20 fighters comfortably made weight for their UFC 120 fights on Friday, with little in the way of fireworks or posturing just 24 hours from the event at London’s 02 Arena.

In the middleweight main event, both Michael Bisping and Yoshihiro Akiyama weighed in at 185 pounds. Bisping leaned into Akiyama at the customary post weigh-in staredown, but Akiyama was unbothered, even breaking into a small smile before UFC president Dana White broke them up and they shook hands.

A little less friendly was the staredown between co-main eventers Carlos Condit and Dan Hardy.

One notable absence from today’s weigh-ins was light-heavyweight Steve Cantwell, who ripped a knee ligament in training yesterday and was forced to withdraw from his fight. The general consensus on this week’s installment of The Bum Rush Radio Show was that Cantwell — on a two-fight losing skid and slated to face scary Bulgarian Stanislav Nedkov — was in serious danger of getting fired after Saturday. So maybe this is for the best…
