Sometimes it’s the events that look the weakest on paper that end up delivering the biggest surprises on fight night. It just so happens that UFC 122 was not one of those events.

With the majority of the main card bouts ending in decisions and possibly the most interesting match-up being pulled altogether in the final hour, I think it’s safe to say that no one’s going to be telling their grandchildren where they were the night the UFC came to Oberhausen.

That’s just how it goes in this business sometimes. All you can do is move on to the next one and hope the stars align on some other night. Until then, let’s sift through the rubble to find out who are the biggest winners, losers, and everything in between after UFC 122.

The MMA Wrap-Up: Post-UFC 122 Edition

With UFC 122 in the books, The MMA Wrap-Up returns to look at what we learned from watching Yushin Okami and Nate Marquardt do the grand old decision waltz in Germany over the weekend.

What does it mean when a couple of middleweights can’t even get all that visibly worked up for a chance at a title shot? And what should the UFC take away from a European fight card that seemed to disappoint the locals and make even the people watching for free on Spike TV want to demand their money back? It’s all covered in this week’s episode, and in less time than it takes to eat a bowl of cereal.

UFC 122 Aftermath: No Really, Take It Easy Out There, Guys

Fuck, that was fucking terrible. Last night we got an up-close-and-personal look at what happens when one of the UFC’s notoriously weak overseas cards doesn’t turn out to be better in practice than on paper. And Nation? It was not pretty. When these haphazard, garage-sale-style European stinkbombs don’t catch lightning in a bottle and don’t exceed our already low expectations, all you’re left with are a bunch of lackluster fights featuring guys nobody cares about. That might be fine for Strikeforce, but frankly we expect more from the UFC.

Oh, did we mention this bad boy was on tape delay? Yeah it was, so unless you were able to spend the day studiously avoiding all electronic media you knew who was going to win anyway, in which case you were probably better served to just stay up late to watch Manny Pacquiao beat up that dude with the Dave Navarro beard. Rumor has it that was pretty shitty too. Coupled with UFCs 119 and 120 it’s hard to remember the last time Our Fearless Leader did three shows this uninspiring in such quick succession. At this point, the supercharged midgets of the WEC can’t get here fast enough. Seriously, it’ll be nice to see a few fights where somebody shows a little urgency.

I’m going to make two predictions.

1. Yushin Okami won’t get the next middleweight title shot.

2. Chael Sonnen will.

I know the UFC promised that the winner of the UFC 122 fight between Okami and Nate Marquardt would be promised the next spot in line. And to his credit, UFC president Dana White said after the event that he’d follow through on that promise. I just think that sometime soon, he’ll reconsider the decision. And when he does, there will only be one direction to go.

In a hard-fought, hard-to-judge main event at UFC 122, Yushin Okami defeated Nate Marquardt by unanimous decision.

“Nate is a great fighter, but I thought I deserved it,” Okami said afterward, through his translator. “I’m ready for the championship.”

UFC President Dana White has said Okami will get that shot, after champion Anderson Silva takes on Vitor Belfort in February. Okami was the last man to beat Silva, winning by disqualification in 2006 when Silva illegally kicked him in the head on the ground, and both of them have said in the past that they want to settle the score. If Silva beats Belfort they’ll finally do it.
